All regions of the US had these folk traditions once. Just that the South kept it, and people in other areas literally became soulless and self-hating.
Bob is one of the ones who kept said traditions.

Steel/slide started as Hawaiian folk music. Then became a big craze where everyone was playing it in the 20s and 30s and 40s. But country kept it living on.
Leo Fender first started as an amp and steel guitar company in California before he was known for anything else. Then made the solid body electric guitar in the 50s. That's how big it was though.... that the steel guitar was even in Cali for an instrument guy to build a company on.
