you might not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like

Selling out and becoming a normie radio rock band for jocks and middle aged car mechanics is not really peak performance.

Metallica really was the greatest band on Earth for 10 years man. sometimes I wish they disbanded by the end of the Black Album tour, just to keep their legacy intact.

By keeping his outer fingers splayed out like that, there was a less severe wrist bend employed. If he was a paw grasper, he would have had to curl his wrist in at much more severe angle, possibly leading to repetitive stress injuries.

They paid their dues with 5 standout albums in the prior 10 years, not to mention carrying the torch farther than anyone. You go right ahead and form a band and show 'em how it's done!

His solos are better than Kirk's
>>127632800
He held the plectrum like a pen, giving him superhuman downpicking strength. Probably the only mvp in the band now, though his age caught up with him and alternate picks Puppets and Creeping Death now.
1989-1993 was peak, what a time to be alive.

>His solos are better than Kirk's
This. The first time I really stood up and listened to a Met solo was the outro solo on Nothing Else Matters. Then the video comes out and turns out it wasn't the lead guitarist. The only solos I remember liking were Creeping Death and the outro solo for Whiplash.

yeah i fucking love that solo. the last part that is just hammer ons. i actually didn't realize until recently that the album version has that too, it's just really quiet compared to kirk's rhythm part. i thought he was taking creative liberty for the live version.

how do you drop 4 legendary classics in the 80s and release nothing but garbage since?

Nothing Else Matters is a fantastic sweet little solo. Het usually does all harmony guitar solos on all album recordings as well, and at least half of the guitar solos on Load & Reload.

Check out this version of Suicide & Redemption from Death Magnets. Complete unedited long JH & KH solos. Hetfield is streets ahead in terms of melody and phrasing and articulation compared to Kirk. You know when James ends and Kirk begins because of the fucking wah and atonal out-of-tune playing Kirk seems to enjoy.

Also, this version has the completed bookends start and finish. Why they edited it for the album is just insane and probably a Lars thing.

Kirk does not appear on the album version of Nothing Else Matters. All guitars by James. But I understand what you mean however that's more of a mixing thing.

I don't know why they never at least once in a while did twin lead stuff like Mercyful Fate or Thin Lizzy, Wishbone Ash, etc. A little variety every now & then ffs.

Live, yes, but in the studio all guitars by James (save for Load, Reload & St Anger Kirk does rhythm on the right channel & overdubs).

That twin guitar harmony would have been great on recordings but James & Lars run the band; Kirk & Rob take a back seat in creative process.

That's why they'll never be the greatest band ever. Lars in particular has a head too big and since he's in charge his stupid ideas can't be shut down. Like the whole fagging out in the 90s with eye liners and shit.

The funny thing is, the next album could have been just fine. If they condensed their best material from Load and Reload into a single, 60-minute album, it would have been no less weird, but a solid follow-up. Instead of that, they went along and released TWO 80-MINUTE LONG ALBUMS with a dozen undercooked songs. It's like they forgot they had to write and flesh out actual songs and not just jam this time around. Just about every dumb fucking idea they got, they half-assed into a "song", it's bewildering. I guess it was the coke?

Yes, but this is exactly why Hardwired and 72 Seasons are mid at best: the guitarist and the drummer write the same E minor songs over and over again ad nauseum.

Cliff was the guy who liked all the epic horror and sci fi themes, without him James and Lars could only do very dry songs about their feels (AJFA had war/political themes probably because they still had unused material from the Cliff era).
