How true is this statement? Songs about anxiety, suicidal thoughts etc. definitely existed prior to Nirvana but they were firmly in the underground and rarely topped the charts.

His songs weren't exactly about wimpyness though. Hard to say what they were about, but everyone got this teenage angst thing out of it. That was universal.
And he wasn't timid or afraid of talking shit or anything.
