The sources of new music for most of my posters are the usual suspects: pitchfork, fantano, rym, shills. So at the end isn't that new music is bad but that mu's SOURCES of new music sucks. And the clearest proofs of what I'm saying is that the threads of new music are always from those shitty sources.

Aside from manually mining Bandcamp and word of mouth, what else really is there?

Check date releases from discogs, Bandcamp, beat port, labels, social media. It's more about looking up by yourself instead of waiting to be spoonfed; john peel radio program had that role: it was uncompromised and covering different genres: rock steady, reggae, dub, techno, jungle, dubstep, grind core, crust punk, black metal, death metal, drum n bass, rap, dancehall, african music, Jap music, indian music, pre 50s music, post hardcore, indie...

Personally I cross reference /mu/, youtube, spotify, bandcamp, rym, metal archives, a few reviewers I understand, and then I try out other reviewers periodically.

but i'm mostly looking for metal and world music

You get your recs from /mu/, I get my recs from autisticly detailing why I like a band, album, or song into chatGPT, having a few back and forths with it, and then telling it I'm looking for more music like it. We are not the same

I listen to college radio just so I'm guaranteed to hear stuff I've never heard before. it has the advantage of being picked by someone who follows a certain scene closely. even if it's not a scene I care about the music is more interesting than anything corporate radio plays. but a lot of it is noise or some other intentionally difficult to listen to crap and I switch around to other stations or play mp3s.

We need Bandcamp mining anons for each major genre of rock, jazz, fusion, electronic, EDM, metal, modern classical, folk, country, prog, etc. We can't rely on RYM anymore, as it's avant fartsniffer shit and rap. We need the bodies, we need people searching. There's so much music out that we're ironically back to before the blog era, because all the coverage is on rapslop and popslop. People will tell us to buy an ad, even though it's not our own bands, but we must push beyond it. Sustained efforts in your genre of choice will have actual influence on the music industry, but it'll take time and effortposting.

don't forget rym zoomers make inorganic moves like raids to fake the general charts and also the shills on rym and here

The charts are only usable if you subscribe and then use the chart features to omit anyone not in their mid-30s. But even the oldheads are somewhat infected by the zoomer ratings and conform to some extent

just scroll down on rym genre pages and you can see a chronological list of every release that was ever rated by even 1 person in that genre

We've got a good bit of that going on /cmg/. Plenty of promotion of both artists with the few million to the few tens of thousands to hundreds of monthly streams who neeed the exposure, at least as best our numbers so far can manage. Something special's bubbling up, and I recommend either joining us or working to promo for your subgenres of choice. /mu/ can be so much more than gooning, goofing, and shitposting.

If you want good sources of music, look at instrument companies and who they gear up and and help and are always on the look out for actual talent to make their own instruments shine. Not just rock either. Same applies to synth companies.
Don't look to some outsider writer who doesn't even do shit with music and knows nobody and doesn't get invited to parties.

I've been doing this for years, and I never have a shortage of great music. This discovery method has really led me down my own path. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean I'm so unique or listen to the most obscure music, but I've organically followed my tastes to lots of varied, unexpected places. People who follow RYM and other trash are all so cookie cutter and uninteresting. If there's anything actually good they're into, it makes its way to me anyway.

that's the point and if you also like things more popular its fine too. its all about a genuine curiosity rather than tryinf to be be hip

They do, and I'm super glad. I got some Chet Baker, John Coltrane, Björk, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Ray Charles, R.E.M., Radiohead, Al Green, etc. on there. The more good music the better, mainstream artists or not.
