When did post-punk go from the art-rock and krautrock influenced punk of the 70s and 80s to just mediocre goth music?

Malcolm Mooney named Can. An american GI in Germany, he named the band The Can because the bands practice space felt like a jail cell.

"Even when they were of the times the Fall always walked their own road, but even so it's interesting seeing them this far out of those times. They were already one of the few still rough and raw Post-Punk acts still playing that way in the mid-80's after all, so now? In the late 80's? They are ENTIRELY out of step with where British rock was, which regardless of inclination (Madchester, Twee, Shoegaze, Gothic) was now more about something kind of vaguely utopian and blissed out, the "second summer of love" as they would soon call it. The only bands that seem to be anything peerlike to them at this point were all American ones, those playing harsh post-Hardcore or noise influenced material."

while OP's wording isn't the best you need to work on your reading comprehension. he's asking why post punk (from the late 70s early 80s) went from art-rock (?) and krautrock influenced (can) while modern day post punk is mostly just goth music. my answer being that post punk and goth are essentially two sides to the same coin and goth is much more fashionable and marketable to the unwashed masses where as going for the krautrock type sound is backing yourself in to a niche corner because it takes a certain level of ingenuity from the listener to understand and appreciate which the average person simply does not care or think about
