I think that the Millennial spirit is to deeply believe that this generation is gonna be different, and therefore that it must do things differently, explore, be adventurous, but in the most boring ways. It's a rebellion against trying to be cool. The dude Xtreme mentality of Silent Generation/boomers/Gen X had to be replaced with the mundane and boring.
In the mid 2000s I knew a girl who later trooned out and cut her tits off. She was going to film school, and she wrote a story for a screenplay. It was about a guy who is depressed, total horseshit where nothing happens and everything revolves around an illness. I tried to give her ideas to spice up the story but she didn't want it, she liked her idea as it was, it had to be boring and mundane, that was the whole appeal, it wasn't Die Hard, Rocky or Home Alone, it was something more novel to her, something that boldly rejects classical concepts such as telling a story that's entertaining or even has a point. To people like her it's the equivalent of "fuck your cute drawings with a sun in the corner, I'm gonna make something you would never do, I'm gonna paint the whole canvas in just one uniform colour with horizontal strokes only."
So here we are dealing with the after of the Millennial mentality, which is extremely bland, shitty music like the pictured albums that go nowhere, have zero interesting ideas, and are mostly about the singer's mental illnesses.
