metalcore, nu-metal and alt metal remains the most popular "metal subgenres"
clearly no normal human wants to listen to that horrible trash-ass metal music so fuck off already
the only metal album to go viral was metallica's pop/rock ballad album

Even if they're not metal I find them more enjoyable to listen to than most metal that's coming out these days.
Metal nowadays is just breakdowns that all sound the same (when did breakdowns even become a thing? Genuinely can't remember), Joey Jordison copycats and shitty metalcore vocals.

They aren't making metal. They are making pop RnB with a Djent twang thrown in every once in a while. If that's enough to be considered metal, then I guess The Beatles are metal as well, because they had like a song with a blues riff and distortion or something. I'd say that's more metal than whatever the fuck Sleep Token is doing.

It's true imho
The other day I literally went into the Spencer's at my local mall for the first time since high school and they had a large portion of the wall dedicated just to Sleep Token t-shirts and hoodies
They also apparently took all of the merchandise meant for the rawr x3 waffles so randum types from Hot Topic and started selling it in their own store next door, so in this age the description is quite apt

My takeaway from listening to their new album was that for all the hand wringing over whether or not Sleep Token are "metal", the band themselves sound like they don't want to be a metal band. Like they want to make faux-goth, alt R&B but throw in the odd djent rift so the moshers that listen to them don't get turned off.

Fantano said something along the lines of "it's a clown singing on a battlefield" or something like that. To be fair it's kinda accurate in a sense but that's what makes it so special. Also Brooks' drumming was very progressive in this one. I dig it a lot.

>Shadow's really killed it with his vocals here
Yeah...with how he lost his voice to some disease, and cant replicate the power it once had, there is a cynicism in his vocal sound now, a ferocious but ultimately muddled grit compared to what he could once do. And the theater kid operatic tangents almost mock this and the audience. It's as if real life, the disillusionment of losing his gift and vitality, ties in for a perfect express of the album's contemplations

On another note it always baffles me how they come up with their more fringe music as they've always seemed somewhat shallow and dudebro in interviews

Yeah I saw them three months ago and he gave a great performance. I honestly couldn't believe it so I checked a phone recording on youtube to be sure that it wasn't the audience drowning out his bad moments. I was fully prepared for him to suck in the old songs but it seems that he's fully adapted to his new range.
>On another note it always baffles me how they come up with their more fringe music as they've always seemed somewhat shallow and dudebro in interviews
Same. Brian, Jimmy and now Brooks have a more eclectic taste from what I've seen in interviews but Matt plays CoD and listens to Kanye. Although judging from his interviews and the song breakdowns they released on youtube he's at least knowledgeable in music theory which is more than most metal vocalists I know. Not sure about Johnny and Zacky. I might need to check Johnny's podcast for that.
