There is no objective way to play guitar (or any instrument). Those who say otherwise are simply close-minded.

>I hate art in music, all this pompous art-rock like Sonic Youth and all that. You couldn’t hum one of their tunes. Sticking guitars in dustbins and you know, playing them with screwdrivers and that. I mean, fuck art – let’s rock.

Have you guys ever listened to SY? Unless you're talking about their soundtracks, their albums are full of songs with melody and riffs.

Taking something to its limit is the beginning of something new. Making something new out of something old is keeping it alive. The purpose of music in itself is to exist. Teleologically, he is a good guitarist. Or, at least, he was at the moment of that pic.

>Give me a pop-song, mate. Give me a fucking pop-song. Not only is it more fun, it's pretty fuckin' hard to write as well. You can bung in as many out-of-tune oboes as you want, but putting chords together so they sound pleasant isn't as simple as it might appear. It mightn't be the Sistine Chapel, but what is? Ollie fucking Olsen with his stupid feedback and cough mixture? The Jesus and Mary Chain, with their stupid feedback, and their stupid stage show with 800 powerful stupid lights and enough stupid dry ice to enhance their stupid stupidity up its own bullshit crappy teenage pretentious one dimensional dick witted puissant artistic enigma?
>So ... what have you listened to for a good time that isn't, after all, a 'traditional' song? Still playing the Mike Oldfield records, huh? Still whipping Yessongs on for a good time? Wanna count on one hand how many people have fun at a Sonic Youth gig? I'm not supporting The Choirboys, old man, I'm just saying that the day some jumped-up over-paid self-important post-modernist cocksucker puts his foot upon his Fairlight computer in the middle of his 47-minute opus "The Silent Forgiveness of the Pig-God" and belts out the chords to "Johnny B. Goode" is the day I'll join you at the footlights of post-modernism.
>Besides which, pop songs sell more.

It takes an unorthodox talent (and your own unique process that you can't just reference elsewhere) to write that many jams in multiple oddball tunings. Not even usual alt tunings, but sht they made up or got from Glenn Branca. I think him and Lee collected a shitload of guitars just for individual songs.

To be fair, pop (the top chart meaning) is pretty hard to write. You have to please the masses and trend in the best way possible without sounding too bland, which is hard when everything has been done already.
I'd much rather make noise.

I Dreamed I Dream is such a good song. It kind of has like a detached, nocturnal thing going on. Beautiful but cold. Hazy. Haven't really found anything like it.

i completely agree with you, however, their discography is ironically pretty one note overall so in the end is like having a huge dick but not knowing how to use it properly, even Jim O'rourke said he played all the songs in standard tuning when he join the band proving it was all just kinda pointless

Their songs sound extremely normal. You'd never really know all this supposedly experimental stuff was happening just by listening to the music.

I also never understood how people call them 'noise rock' anyway when it all just sounds like normal rock music instrumentally. Do people hear a distorted riff in a rock song and think it's some groundbreaking edgy thing?
Anonymous No.127725372 [Report]
>>127725359
It's really only their first album up to Evol that's genuine noise rock. After that they switched to tamer music.

If you listen to a reasonable amount of guitar music you should immediately recognize that their songs sound different because the chord shapes aren't possible in regular tuning.

Noel doesn't have a creative bone in his body. His art form is theft followed by a modicum of alteration.
