Experimenting with a share format for EDM stuff. I think there's a fair few good DJ sets on Youtube, and I rip the audio on those and put them in a folder together for personal listening with artwork and stuff. I've tried listening to EDM albums over the years, but the DJ sets are just so much better.

Anyway, I found this guy online because of the cello, but I really like this set. The video is worth a skim to check if you like it. House music on the lighter side. I've listened to other sets by Waddle and they're hit and miss, but I like this set enough to shill it.

in most cases youtube doesnt have high quality audio to rip. its a complex system as there is no set audio quality, but bitrate is scaled proportionately to video resolution so people with slow connections who watch in lower resolutions have less overall data to download. even if youre watching in 1080p the audio is only 192kbps, while its 256kbps at 1440p and 380kbps at 2160p. it can also vary the bitrate mid-stream to deal with network conditions and maintain playback without buffering. but the original video resolution provides the upper limit so if the uploader made his vid in 1080p, the audio will never go above 192kbps. if it was 480p the audio is 128kbps.
also bear in mind that youtube transcodes everything that gets uploaded. even if the uploader made the soundtrack to his 1080p video in 320kbps mp3, that will get transcoded to 192kbps for streaming. so practically everything on the site is a lossy-lossy transcode in the first place, regardless of actual bitrate.

oh yeah and if you use one of those sites that rip the audio for you, they transcode it AGAIN to give you an mp3 file to dl.
so if the original was 320kbps mp3, youtube transcodes to 192kbps AAC, then the download site transcodes it back to mp3.
really, just use slsk if you have the option

Yeah, I was using those sites and I figured that they transcoded the video that was already transcoded upon upload. That's why I figured I should ask here.

I didn't know about the audio kbps rates per visual resolution, that's interesting.

The impression I get is that people that are full on EDM fans are grabbing lossy mixes and not really caring about fidelity, but DJs creating mixes are using lossless files (I would hope) and don't have to worry about extended track lengths or anything because they can just transition to the next song when desired.

Are most fans just watching stuff on Youtube, and otherwise clubbing/going to festivals or raves? I've been trying to figure it out for years from the outside and I still don't really know.

honestly I have no idea. but the thing with bitrates isnt made clear on the site, you have to dig through help pages to find it. a lot of people seem to assume that if youtube streams the vid in the same res as it was uploaded it would stream the audio unchanged too, and someone who thought that might well upload in 320kpbs, v0 or w/e because that would be fine to stream, but ofc thats not what happens and because you dont know what the original file was you cant know what you end up with as a dl, which would annoy me because Im turbo autistic about stuff like that.

I mean, above 2k resolution the audio quality should be good, certainly it would be above my "good enough" standard for something like a DJ mix, but youtube doesnt actually stream in flac, it only uses AAC, eg a 4k video has 380kbps AAC audio. but thats fine, AAC is more efficient than mp3, so a 380 AAC file would be more transparent than a 380kbps mp3, if you could create one which you cant but you get what I mean. so yeah if youre accessing that audio thats the best you can get from youtube.

i understand it the same way most people understand emo music, which comes from adding "emotional" to "hardcore": it has a stronger connection with trying to convey more "sensitive" or sentimental feelings rather than any other element in the sound. it's like comparing detroit techno with dream trance, one is clearly more geared towards what you feel emotionaly from the song where as the other is more focused on the sense of rhythm and constancy

Virtually every other genre of electronic is more repetitive. Especially the glitchy stuff. House is closer to the old tradition of funk hits.

I've always fucking loved the Neotokyo (cs mod) soundtrack (Neotokyo GSDF/NSF - Ed Harrison), I think they're near flawless for the vibe they provide. The only album that hits harder for this particular feeling for me is Crying Over Pros for No Reason. Some Lorn cuts also go pretty hard.

If you like brooding textural orchestral type shit give this a listen.

There's no one place because everyone's tastes are different. You'll eventually randomly listen to a track that'll really click and that'll help you pin down the genres you like. For me it was Tangerine Dream's Rubycon, which made me discover krautrock and then other genres down the line (IDM, psytrance, psybient, deep techno, etc.). For you it might be different.

first of all, edm isn't a genre itself, it's a broad category that includes everything that has cohesive rhythm and melody. you can start anywhere, depends on your taste: if you like rock there's big beat, if you like noisy stuff there's power noise, etc.; get a scoop of everything and then see what you like the most. i'd recommend checking jungle, drum and bass, techno, house, breakbeat and industrial to get an overview. daft punk is usually where everyone starts, and there's also the prodigy and chemical brothers.
