The Cure's Charlotte Sometimes. Any live rendition decimates the shitty studio recording really, but especially this one:

They had a reasonable amount of buzz in the mid 2000s when they peaked. They were on some soundtracks. They did a song with David Bowie.

Honestly this is so true. Don't know if it was them or the label but they massively dropped the ball

You could say the same of literally every song from either of their live albums.

I too have never met a fan either. I guess they kind of were seen as anomaly being black dudes doing noisy indie rock which usually is the domain of balding ytbois.

Most if not all of Made In Japan betters the studio recordings of Deep Purple.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARYwxDEKYOE also much of Live Seeds betters Nick's studio recordings, even the Wild God material is better live.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-HyW9q_Pqw an example from old Neil Young's catalog.

TVotR's records have always left me kind of "meh" but I saw the live a few years ago w/ Dirtbombs opening up and both bands were freaking amazing. Definitely worth seeing live.

Yeah man, lots of artists I can find maybe one or two songs where a live version kills the album recording but for some reason TVotR is like their mojo just can’t be captured in the studio at all or something

Good one, I had to go back and listen to the album track again after and I gotta agree with you it hits harder. The live version somehow feels more timeless without the 80s production

I feel the same about TVotR from my OP and King Crimson, some bands “thing” just can’t seem to be captured in the studio at all, would like more examples of that phenomenon

I used to say that about Sleepytime Gorilla Museum until their most recent record, which is excellent.

Most of their studio albums were "meh" but live they were jaw-dropping amazing every time I saw them.
