If you think about it, vaporwave kids were gen z's equivalent to scene kids. I'm sure there were even a couple of scene kids who transitioned to vaporwave.

It's a late 2000s subculture that splintered off from emo. They basically took emo, added neon colors, and combined it with ironic "lol so randumb xD" internet humor.
