Despite being influential to musicians, Failure and Hum got nowhere near the amount of attention and acclaim as other 90s artists. Why is this? Also why are they now becoming really popular 30 years after their prime?

I think Failure was operating at a loss during the entirety of the “Alternative Nation” thing…. y’know, even the Melvins were getting Atlantic Records money by 1994… meanwhile MAGNIFIED was being distributed by Slash Records… it’s a cool cred label and I respect the hell out of them for keeping the indie truecel dream alive but it was over before it even began, you’re not competing with Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden or even Smashing Pumpkins on Slash Records… by 1996, the zeitgeist had well thoroughly shifted under FANTASTIC PLANET’s feet; Cobain had been worm food for two years…. and that heavy, alt-metal/space-rock sound couldn’t have died any harder in ‘96, unfortunately.

This is one of the best indie pop shoegaze tunes ever. Found this on Napster a long time ago. They put out a video for it thankfully. Unfortunately the singer died, so they never did anything else. But it's a hidden gem. Enjoy

Japan outputs a lot of notable shoegaze and is obsessed with cats in general
you'll see cats in album art A LOT in general if you dig into Japanese music
there are a few there that aren't Japanese though but I guess everyone likes cats some anyways

My introduction to shoegaze was Sun Devoured Earth. Their music makes being depressed feel so nice, I learned to be very careful when putting it on.

you lose me there, adding bleep bloop interludes isn't forward thinking, you even contradict yourself in the same post saying it reminds you of older sounds. Most of their music sounds the same as 80% of what you'd hear on DKFM at any given time. Even the stuff they just put out from the new album just sounds like Slint and Swirlies. Again, not saying I dislike them I just think the hype is seriously overblown

But none of these are like Eureka really (though give Moondiver a shot at least because it may work for you depending on what you like about Eureka)
The thing with Kinoko Teikoku is they blended j-rock with shoegaze really effectively in a way I haven't seen much else of. Most other Japanese shoegaze is either cloning loveless or leaning more into dream pop and jpop. There are some Japanese rock bands who have the same spirit of Kinoko Teikoku but none of them are doing the whole shoegaze thing on top of it...

Kinoko Teikoku's demo albums are really nice though if you haven't heard them
