The real answer is because it's fucking stupid and was only a 90's / early 00's trend that many bands jumped on to try and cash in.
Other bands such as Fear Factory did the same thing in the early 00's.
Hip hop and rap artists also did the same thing to hop onto the trend. Some notable examples are Vanilla Ice who's 3rd album is nu-metal and Cypress Hill who went nu-metal in 2000
People that always dressed like that are not metalheads.
