This is a real lyric btw. It's too overtly sexual in a cringey way and it's hard for me to get past that. It's like black music. I prefer lyrics that have some wit, subtleties and aren't too vile.

I like NIN a lot but the lyrics are often kinda stupid and cheesy. I believe it's all sincere but shit like "YOU TOLD ME YOU'D NEVER SAY GOODBYE, NOW I'M SLIPPING ON THE TEARS YOU MADE ME CRY" almost sounds like parody. There isn't much poetry going on the lyrics, it's very blunt and straightforward and when the material is this edgy that can seem a bit immature and over-the-top at times. But again, it's sincere and Trent isn't just saying all that shit to be cool and edgy just for the sake of being edgy which you can feel through the music, so it's not like a "problem". It just isn't a part of his music that is particularly great, you don't listen to NIN for the lyrics

Yeah. The bluntness is also reflected in how aggressive he is as a performer. NIN in the late-80s/90s was a really aggressive band:

He has that manlet rage. He's also very shy IRL apparently. That part is not an act. I listened to an interview with Chris Vrenna by Cevin Key who toured with NIN at one point and said he didn't talk much, and Vrenna (who formed NIN with Reznor in Ohio) said yeah that's pretty much what he's like all the time.

Also he doesn't like being famous. He likes being successful but his relationship to celebrity is very awkward. He got a lot of offers to do late-night shows when NIN was getting big but I don't think he ever did it. Like going on Letterman and so on.

I think his lyrics are silly but at least they are tongue in cheek. I find 90s edgy and god bashing confessional diary type of lyrics quite annoying (most of his contemporaries have a similar style).
