non-music fag here. I find that I like how picking individual strings on a guitar sounds way better than like strumming chords. I've noticed that many songs that involve a lot of strumming (esp. acoustic guitar music) just sound worse and I like less than songs that involve more individual picking. Can anyone relate to this specific autism? Is there /theory/ to back this up?

Most guitar songs that involve strumming use boring chords

you like hearing melody more than harmony

Makes sense. For instance I really like electronic music, flamenco, certain varieties of metal.

I think part of this taste stems from how inseparable the image of a guy sitting around a campfire strumming away on his guitar in a fake performative way is with a lot of that type of music.

I do like harmony when it comes to like classical or ambient, however.

There's more virtuousity and individual expression in picking

than in strumming

Not really, buddy it's just your taste, you may like Bach and baroque music and its many acoustic guitar translations.

The kino resides in juggling melody with ocassional double stopping and pseudo chording. Prominent example: the riff from money for nothing

Well fingerpicking usually involves a lot more complexity, typically playing multiple lines at once. You also get the added sweetness of a classical guitar over a steel string, or at least taking advantage of the sweet spots on a steel string. If you just mean plucking with a pick, that draws out a unique clean sound with a lot more personality and interest in my opinion.
