Why was it such a big hit?
Anonymous No.128038491 [Report]
Because it is highly disciplined songwriting, excellent playing, a very well-thought out and executed concept both musically and lyrically.

I honestly think listeners must just have been smarter back then or something. There is no way that a prog concept album could ever be a smash hit if it were released today.

Cause it's undoubtedly an amazing album.
Album cover helps too.

Because people were starting to get big hifi systems (better than most modern ones simply because of size) while all the competing home entertainment was still shit.

It's, by no exaggeration, the best boomer rock album ever made

Perfect minimal art, just the right mix of high brow and mass appeal, probably best piece of visual art of the XX century

pop changed from bands like the Beatles to solo artists like Madonna and then there’s also rap and subsequently hip hop and dsotm was pre punk going mainstream and then everything that followed from there

It was really creative and unique for its time and experimented a little bit, but also had catchy songs and has some of the most pristine production of all time. It just hit all the boxes. As opposed to Animals or Wish You Were Here which may be more momentous musical achievements but are not as accessible to a generic/casual audience.
