I think the bunnymen are as good as the smiths but the smiths have the edge in terms of the amount of great songs. both are two of the best british bands ever.
I like some stuff by the cure but not to the same degree I love the smiths and the bunnymen.

I love E&TBM and Ian McCulloch was one hell of a songwriter with more poetic grace on his pinkie than Moz had in his entire corny ass life. Even Leonard Cohen was a fan.

Look man I think Killing Moon is a fucking banger but it's their best song and isn't close to the highs the Cure were hitting in the 80s. I don't like the Smiths so can't comment.

As far as underated 80s Brit bands go, the underdog for me is House of Love. Incredibly high highs but some disastrous lows.

Echo sound way more dated, despite mostly avoiding production tropes of the time.
Anyway, the superior "look at me I'm different" choice of post punk band is The Sound.

Always thought Ian McCulloch was a bit of a pretty boy cock nozzle. The Bunnymen are allright. Not my favorite Post Punk band by a long chalk.
Saw The Chameleons on Thursday night. That band still rocks with Vox and it's 2025. Glad I went.
