Why is this country so bad at making music? The only good Russian music I’ve listened to is early 20th century classical music like Shostakovich that the USSR sponsored. All of their modern music is utter trash: hardbass, shitty hip hop that rips off Western rappers, generic Euro pop stuff, Gen z “drift phonk”, etc

Also the “they don’t have freedom of expression” argument is invalid because there have been lots of amazing Russian movies during the dictatorship parts of their history, so why no good music

There’s only like seven or maybe eight countries that do consistently make popular and good music why are you singling out this country?

The average person in the USSR never heard a rock record and there had been only an actual handful of music recording studios in the literally largest country in the world. Rock was banned. I already addressed that in the OP. If the USSR’s crackdown on importing Western media is the reason there was a lack of good music, then why is there a rich history of great Soviet-era films? And even post-communism Russia has good movies

Also, you don’t need Western influence to create cool music, but even the music that was solely created from Russian culture is lacking. China is not at all a free country but even they have a better music scene than Russia, including both Westernized Cpop and endemic Chinese music

As for the lack of quality in modern Russian music, it all boils down to their shitty political system and regime. Heavy censorship of artists and corrupzion and nepotism in the music industry caused by important players in their music industry who are aligned the regime is naturalky going to stop plenty of legitimately talented artists from ever getting noticed. Also, Russia has a shitty education system where they intentionally neglect art and social sciences and any type of creative and original thought or form of expression, because if the common folk are educated avout those things they will naturally becone smart enough to start doubting things around them and for a totalitarian regime that's a big no-no. You're supposed to shut up and live in blissful ignorance. An environment like that is not going to have kids take up an interest in making music let alone develop them into good musicians
