How do you organise your music?

It seems doing it in a way that is usable is not an easy feat.

for what? obviously listening, but where all do you listen to music: in the car? at work? at the gym?

It depends on the medium. I used to have a lot of cds and I’d have them loosely categorised by genre, so metal together alternative together hip hip together pop together sort of thing and usually I’m not going to go for a specific record but more of a mood thing when I’m selecting something to listen to so that works for me.
Alphabetical is the obvious way to go if you’re specifically looking to listen to a particular record

This way albums are both chronological and alphabetical within an artist folder. It's not perfect, but it's easy to be consistent and deterministic. Any organization after that should be a media player's job.

>categorised by genre
This has always felt like a fool's errand to me. Genre's aren't especially concrete, change over time, and can have different meanings from person to person.

There isn't a stellar music player for Linux that I've seen. Strawberry is okay but buggy.

thats why you use broad categories of your own choosing. then when you want to listen to, say, techno, you have your media player show all the things you categorise as techno
