serious question
up until the very late 60s, there was little proficiency in rock music
there was one or another guitarist who was great at playing the blues, or a more skilled drummer, but overall the bar wasn't that high
so how the fuck was it that, seemingly out of nowhere, a whole generation of amazing musicians came to be and created prog rock?
where were they before, and how has no other rock subgenre before or since been so filled with brilliant and highly skilled musicians?

Clapton was called the greatest guitarist in the world in 67 for his pentatonic noodling, and two years later, Fripp was soloing in 21st Century Schizoid Man
The Soft Machine went from playing silly pop songs to odd jazz infused psychedelia in a year's notice

They're standing on the shoulders of giants and exploration from there. Not to mention as rock gained traction, it seeped into more categories of people with access to higher education. It's not just people pushing the envelope on the blues rock they were raised on anymore, more people from varying musical backgrounds, and access to to better teaching let rock grow on a technical and compositional level by blending in what they knew from classical and world music.

It's basically just that prog is for fucking nerds and that lends itself well to having the musicians practice for technicality.

Jazz still had it's own nerds at the same time, if I had to say it was just that the musicians that went into prog were just chasing something that was radically different to what they got from jazz. Not to mention both multi-track recording and use of electric instruments had been popularized and were heavily evolving by the 60's, which drains off into more things for the most autistic ones to experiment with. They've basically been handed a whole new set of toys, and jazz just wasn't their impulses were headed towards. Or maybe it was just the good drugs?

Scaruffi talked about this phenomenon in Italy, but I imagine that it holds true for the UK, France, or wherever else in Europe that prog really took off. Essentially there was a growing middle class after the second World War and many families put heir children into classical music, because that's what the nouveau riche think wealthy people do.

I think musicians with jazz/classical aptitude were always there, but danceable rock was where the money was until '67 or so. Tastes evolved quickly and demand grew for 'interesting' music after a few successful examples (Bruford has cited Sgt. Pepper as the most important one).

Rush deviated from the typical binary song form as frequently as Pink Floyd. They just didn't write such long compositions, although many fit more ideas and structure into shorter songs than Pink Floyd's more interminable efforts. The chart's biggest error is equating mere length or 'concept albums' with formal invention.

Schizo take, the average Rush album is basically just a list of generic boomer pop rock with a few occasional stand-out tracks here and there where they actually put their technical skills to good use. I think they obviously count as prog too, but I don't buy this "they were as creative as PF and just put more ideas into a more conventional" structure bullshit.

You didn't read the post. What I said is that they often didn't put their ideas into conventional structures, at least during their peak period. Up till and including 2112 they were guilty of stitching together songs to make 'long songs', which is to be fair true of many other prog bands. But even a popular pick like YYZ isn't a 'song without words', and still less merely extended soloing, but rather a structured instrumental work with distinct recurring sections and a central apotheosis, even if it's not as long as most Pink Floyd songs. More sustained instrumental efforts like La Villa Strangiato could even less be called songlike even as they retain formal structure. Others like Xanadu certainly enclose a more songlike structure within an introduction and outro, but the long and lyrical melody that constitutes the refrain is very atypical for popular music.

Of course, Pink Floyd did write inventive instrumental suites on e.g. Atom Heart Mother and projected atypical long form structures (I find Dogs particularly successful). But I don't find the pleasant but soporific songs like Echoes to be any more convincing as a long form musical structure than Rush's stitched up series of songs like 2112 or Fountain of Lamneth.

it's not just that he's autistic, it's the sort of autism that he has
Vander is autistic as well, as someone pointed out, but he's almost charming in how odd and strange he is
there's something deeply interesting about a man who'd make up a whole mithology and language to go with his very strange music
fripp made brilliant music, but doesn't seem like such an interesting person
putting it in school terms:
Vander is that weird kid with retard rage that dressed like sonic and was funny to watch
Fripp was that lame kid who'd get mad and call the teacher if you sat on his favorite desk

I thought some of the Frippertronics stuff here was interesting. Ambient and prog electronic artists all have that problem I think. Steve Roach is like my favorite and a huge amount of his albums are boring and samey. It's also really easy to produce that kind of stuff so I think it runs into quality control issues a bigger production wouldn't have.

fripp has an unique style, but is not a very creative man
he's been able to blend in well and produce a great amount of music in styles that other, more creative people, created and ventured in
at every incarnation of his band, he sat next to very skilled musicians who'd venture into different directions musically, and he'd pretty much just do his thing
no wonder he's the most consistent member of KC, he's the only one who never did anything different
it might have to do with his autism, though

this album was pretty cool though. i think when fripp is soloing with that really grainy tone it's great, and it's just cool to imagine what weird setup eno and fripp were rocking at the time. but some of fripp's recently rereleased live ambient performances and some of his actual ambient albums are really poor, especially for fripp. swear to god one album is literally just him fucking with a looper pedal and not changing anything, but then i guess you could say that's trve ambient

Don't get me wrong lads, the Great Deceiver boxset is full of fantastic material. Compared to the initial pre-Larks tour of the full five-man line-up, the material and playing is much more focused and refined.
But I think Jamie Muir brought a real x-factor to that incarnation of King Crimson. His influence shows strongly in stand-out tracks like Larks Pt1 and The Talking Drum on the album itself, but for my (easy) money the improvisations the group did in this incubatory period are some of the best work they've ever put out.

I would say The Rich Tapestry of Life from the 1972 Beat Club performance is perhaps the single best thing they've done--You can hear a strong inspiration from the avant jazz scene at the time, including Miles Davis' early 70s electric work. Also David Cross on flute ~18 minutes in makes it a wholly unique recording for the era.
The Newcastle performance from later that year is also quite good. Improv 1 has an upbeat sound more comparable to the earlier Crimson incarnations, but Improv 2 in particular is the single greatest evidence of Jamie Muir's contribution to the group. A sparse, primarily-percussion piece that's very comparable to his earlier work with The Music Improvisation Company. Not everyone's cup of tea, but if you're interested in Muir's innovative "found sound" percussive approach it's a very enjoyable listen.
