If it's obviously possible to sound "nostalgic for old times" without sampling, then why would they be essential? Who settled that vaporwave was about tunes from the past in specific and not feelings from the past? Who was the first person to supposedly settle that?

before, there was kind of ariel pink's aesthetic..but he wrote his own songs on top of sampling. vaporwave just kind of went in the full sampling direction.

Vaporwave needs sampling and needs also to slow sample reproduction so the sampling artifacts show up. Its about the recorded sound object.

I mean, nostalgia, missing something, can be missing feels, not necessarily missing certain tunes specifically. So to me it's very possible to write songs from zero but which references the feels of the past. Nostalgia means missing something from the past. In this sense, vaporwave is a conceptually hard genre, because even gaving that sampling was necessary, what would count as vaporwave, a sample of what kinds of songs? Of any? Then there would be very different from those we know, strange, vaporwave songs. The possibilities would be many.

yes, but mellowed down like its a nostalgic dementia flashback song playing on another echo-y room next door or in a Super Market or Fashion Department store or a Mall.

And it's aesthetics somehow fused with Tropical Seapunk and Ancient Greece so it looks like an idealization of Miami in the 80s. Aka like Vice City aka like Miami Vice
