Idk, DOOM has to be one of the most overrated artists of all time (his songs say absolutely nothing, zill, zero, 0; they are just empty rhymes of high complexity). This dude was essentially a white nerd trapped inside the body of a fat black man, but there are still some black guys that fuck with his music. I think it's pretty much not even hip hop in spirit; it's more similar to something like Talking Heads in how it feels.

Its really because of Adult Swim Nostalgia like alot of others have said, but his beats are genuinely some of the best hip hop instrumentation of all time, like the Prince to JDillas Michael. What they were able to do within their soundscape is generally seen as special no matter how off base his rhymestyle is in comparison.

An acquired taste but an important one as far as Hip Hop goes. entire underground platforms like Soundcloud owe their existence to this man as far as what he was able to do for alternative Hip Hop. Remember All Caps when you spell the man name.

He was in essence an 80s hiphop oldfag who managed to carve himself a tiny spot of relevance going into the 2000s because at that point he was the only one who still played in the hipiddy hoppidy lyrical miracle ballpark, which made him stand out.
