Wow. I saw The Chameleons on Thursday night. Wasn't expecting an opening band but 3 black dudes and two white guys got up on stage and instantly blew me away with the most awesome shoegaze set I think I've ever heard live. Didn't know who they were and finally got their name;
The Veldt.
Got a new fan in me that's for sure.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I wasn’t really sure how to start navigating that chart since I haven’t had the time to go through the majority of those albums yet. So far I’m really into Burrrrn and Slowdive, and the MBV album is growing on me fast since I love that gritty/fuzzy(?) guitar tone. Really sucks that Loveless was removed from Spotify though.

I’ve also checked out most of the singles (haven’t had time for the full albums yet, but I’ll get to them soon) in this thread and have really enjoyed listening to the majority of them so far. Thanks for the song recommendations as well--really liking both of them, but the dreamy atmosphere in Shirley Temple Tidal Wave (around 3ish min) is just absolutely mesmerizing and reminds me a lot of kiss a girl In black.

Thanks so much!

Also anything off of Spooky by Lush - produced by Robin Guthrie and they're on the same label.
Other 90s contemporaries of theirs to try out: Ozean, Love Spirals Downwards, This Mortal Coil, Mazzy Star, Alison's Halo.
A lot of similarities with The Cure's Disintegration too imo if you haven't listened to that before.

good stuff there. It's an official release of the 1991 Mayfield bootleg with better mixing. The first and last tracks are my favorite.
Honestly I like it a bit better than Delaware, but that's probably because it's much more Soulvaki inspired and more ethereal sounding overall

this might just be me having a zoomer perspective, but i think these charts make a fundamental error into getting a given type of music by suggesting starting with the pioneers of the genre. i can say i'm into -gaze type music but i tried getting into MBV, LSD and other early stuff and just didn't vibe with it. Tv Tropes has a name for what i think is going on here, called "Seinfeld Is Unfunny", which due to various factors, later generations seeing pioneering works as unoriginal, mid and cliche, compared to durative works that they are more familiar with that twist the original formula.

if i was making a chart, i'd probably go look at the billboard charts and see what the biggest hits of a genre are that have made it there in recent times and work backwards from there.

as an example, Ethel Cain i think is the biggest breakout in recent time for this kinda music, working backwards from her could be one starting point. Fade Into You, Joywave, and Panchiko are others that come to mind.

taste is subjective, maybe instead of shitposting you can actually engage with the critique? i'm not saying that the pioneers are bad, i'm saying they don't have broad appeal, most experimental music doesn't.

would you want your first experience with driving to be a Monowheel or a popular brand of car? i would think the former would scare off a number of people who might otherwise quite enjoy driving.

Idk with art a lot of the paradigms are great on their own. Most fantasy has a hard time keeping up with Tolkien's pace but it's not impossible to be on his level. In fact I think a lot of defining pieces can feel more fresh at times because they're not as shoe-horned into the tropes despite being the definers. I've been watching a lot of older horror/monster movies and am surprised with how much fun I'm having with them
>>128136494
Sorry for writing that out in good faith you're a utilitarian sack of shit who thinks of art as a product with a shelf life. a resonant piece is resonant. also all that spacing in the first post is reminiscent of AI

Pioneering works are by definition experimental. The Beetles experimented with studio equipment like crazy. So did a lot of 80s acts. I believe you are misconstruing what i mean with avant garde. Perhaps the better term would be like from jazz, "free form"? unlikely but may closer to the mark.

first four are albums know as “popgaze” or “loveless sound“, which is the type of music Fleeting Joys is known for. Highspire's “Crushed” features John Loring as part of the band's new lineup, so you might like it. the rest are more “traditional” shoegaze, with less heavier effects and wall of sound and more related to alt rock. hope you enjoy them!

P. D.: i assumed you already know about my bloody valentine's “Loveless“, but since you're just getting into the genre you might not, so, please, listen to it if you haven't, it's literally the reason many bands and their sound exist, including Fleeting Joys. also, if you wanna get into the classics, Ride's career and history will show you the way
