I second this. Call around to local shops and ask if they know any luthiers. I take my guitars to a boomer shop 45 minutes away. They charge 90 for a setup and 150 for a Floyd setup but they build their own custom instruments and are licensed fender repair techs. They always come back as if the guitar came out of a custom shop. For me it’s worth it for a one and done on every guitar I buy.

It’s not a full fret job but they level polish and dress the frets. If there’s any kind of sprout or sharp edges they’ll round those off and polish them. When I get the guitars back the frets feel glassy and I have no dead notes. I have them set all my guitars up to factory specs, so whatever the manual tells them to do. I think on my charvel it’s 1.5mm at the 12th fret low and 1.6 high. Back in the day I’d tell them I wanted “low” section because I thought that was the most desirable setup on electrics. But I’ve found that I like a mid height the best cause I can be more aggressive with my picking and strumming without buzzing and the guitar has more sustain with open notes.

How am I supposed to know that I can use an A7, which has a C#, in a progression in the key of D minor which doesn't have a C#? I also had to use a chord tool to figure out which implied chord that was (C# G A). Is there a flow chart I can use? I tried inverting it until it makes sense, but I can only recognize stadard root-third-fifth triads. This one was missing the fifth, so I was lost.

Look into harmonic minor modes- basically, aeolian/natural minor changes the diatonic C to a C# for a stronger resolution. It’s very common. You’re “allowed” to do this even though it “breaks” the diatonic rules.

Once you understand this concept, you can approach any chord with a chord a fifth above its root. It’s notated a V7, and jazz assmunchers go the extra step and add a ii minor, so it’s just ii-V or in the case of minors, ii°-V7. Autumn Leaves is a prime example of this.

LVL1SL1ME No.128090839
>>128090766
Going one step further, you can use diminished chords to approach any chord from a half-step below. Here’s where it gets cool: all V7 chords have a diminished triad in them. If we take the A7, this has A C# E G. The C# E G is a diminished chord, and fully spelled out it is C# E G Bb. If you flat the Bb, you get… drum roll… A7. This means that you can approach ANY chord by a half step above.

https://voca.ro/14zCMSNcA8Di
Dmin to A7
DMin to C#dim

Don’t even get me started on tritone substitutions (again, jazzmunchies).

you can pick it up with resonance (like picking behind the nut). Its a different design, but it's not like a Bigsby stays in tune or any Fender with a tremelo for that matter.

It gives you a more "resonant" sound. If it sucked, it wouldn't be used. MBV used them and those are iconic sounds you won't find elsewhere.

I agree, we all want a "base" instrument unadorned with character, but it has... Wait, hold on, this asshole is responding as a contrarion >>128092320

The neck relief and fretwork is perfect as well as the intonation and everything else. All I have to do is loosen the bridge screws a half turn each and tune once then lock it down. Still played great I just want the bridge level.

Not nearly his most impressive song guitar wise but this song is constantly stuck in my head, the record this song is from lived in my tape player in my first car when I was in my late teens/eary 20s. It’s really cool that he’s still touring, next time he’s in my area I want to go see him. I saw him maybe 15 years ago but he’s 80 now and he won’t be around forever.

Yeah, he's a good dude. He owes Fahey for everything, but he's got a good steez. All he does is pattern picking with flourishes.

Gimme a second to tune my beater to open G dropped a major 3rd. I need thicker strings, but I love his ability to put that aside and tell a story.

Sorry, I'm on a Melvins bender (7 beers deep).

Yeah Fahey is the man but Kottke was who I got into first as a teenager and he’s stuck with me. There’s a lot of nostalgia with him for me on top of also really enjoying his stuff. My dad was really into a lot of those Tacoma guys and Kottke was just the one that I clicked with

Yeah. Rolled edge jumbo nickel frets. Ebony board, roasted maple neck, gotoh tuners, bourns low friction volume pot, no load volume pot, direct to body mounted seymour Duncan jb/59, 5 way switch with coil splits, Floyd 1500 with push in trem bar. There’s nothing I need to add besides maybe locking tuners for string changes, noiseless springs for the trem, and possibly a brass block. But it already sustains really well and sounds great so I probably won’t fuss over that.

>Feel free to paste this anywhere.

>I have given to charity my whole life, but recently turned down the ALS challenge because I feel I can raise more money for more charities without making anyone wet, I mean no disrespect to anyone - I just feel I can help more people this way.

>Instead of the bucket of ice water and £100, I will personally be donating roughly £2400 worth of guitars to orphanages, along with the proceeds of my percentage of the recordings to two charities of my choice ( Macmillan cancer support and RSPCA)

>This together with many hours of free work will be my contributions to charity.

>Capt. Lee, Rabea Mossad, Fred Baum and Sam Coulson have already agreed and I am looking forward to making this a fun and successful charity event.

>With regards to the claims of "Self Promotion", with roughly 3 million a month on YouTube and a globally successful guitar company I do not need promotion by throwing water over my head and being seen to donate a few hundred pounds to ALS in what has become a peer pressure trend, instead of giving £100 to ALS I have opted to give £2400 worth of guitars to orphanages and some money to help multiple charities rather than just one

>Of course haters will just brand anything I do here in an attempt to help people as "Self Promotion". . .

>I'm a rock guitarist, nobody tells me what to do with my charitable donations... charity is and always should be a personal thing. If you really have a problem with me giving guitars to orphans and money to multiple charities then you have a problem and I suggest you address your own charitable work.

>Lastly, anyone found to be making defamatory or threatening statements about myself or anyone involved in this charitable project will be named, shamed, and met with immediate legal proceedings.

>My charitable donations are mine to give.

>Kind regards, Rob Chapman
