Hear me out, if Columbine didn't happen, there's a non-zero chance that Marilyn Manson would actually be a lot more respected.

If he had the balls to continue doing weird artistic evolutions after Mechanical Animals and surrounded himself with more talented musicians I think at this point he would've been considered a shittier version of Bowie or Bjork and that's still light years better than whatever the fuck he's doing now

The problem with Marilyn Manson is Marilyn Manson. Columbine or not, he's notoriously difficult to work with, which is why all of his best bandmates eventually quit. He played favorites, was emotionally abusive and manipulative towards his own "friends", and became the exact thing he hated. Everything after GOAG is a true reflection of what Manson is capable of achieving without his best men....which is to say, immature, self-pitying edgelord drivel.

Imagine a universe where the original lineup (besides the drummer, who legit sucked at drums.) had remained together up until modern times. Imagine if Marilyn Manson referred to a band, instead of just one dude. Everything after Holy Wood would have actually been worth listening to.

just caught up on his post-00s albums for the first time, was better than expected. "Pale Emperor" onward had the most variety & evolution since Mechanical Animals. But it's implied that he's not as much of a musical artist as he is an 'ideas guy' visual artist mallgoth poet, so the quality of the music itself is reliant on whatever collaborators he's working with at the time.

I'd argue the art direction + visuals were really important too. Those were handled by Floria Sigismondi, PR Brown and Joseph Cultice in the late 90s.
Once he started firing the talented people and his personal life became messy, that's when MM should've stopped
