Well generally, when artist sell their discog it means they are soft quitting. Colloqually cashing out. They dont care as much or at all. In Tame Impalas case I think he is a bit slighted putting a fuck ton of work during his psychedelic rock era and only getting a Grammy after being a feature for a "literal who" (iykyk). Cheek out his productions its insane and its all top notch. Also having a kid and focusing on being a father. Lastly, based on a consistent theme across 5 albums of being Lonesome in a crowd weighs down on a person. I'd imagine being introverted when having critical acclaim can cause some dissonance in his head, kind of like golden handcuffs.

My question was just asking the connection between selling his old music and releasing this album as far as quality goes but I didn’t even consider him wanting to quit but it makes total sense. I figured someone like him would just pump out stuff in the studio by himself and release it without needing all the promotional BS maybe he is 99% done with it. The singles he’s releasing this time around seem half baked which is odd considering the time between releases. I already know how top notch his production and mixing is plus his drumming. I miss the psych rock days but I respect currents and the Supertramp worship of soft rush, but this new album seems to be leftover scraps.

kevin parker is not a particularly interesting musician or a great songwriter, but he is a very good engineer.
i think that is the correct framing for his career now that we've got a few records from him and seen him engineer for someone else.
his first album made as much of a splash almost entirely because of his engineering prowess. but he immediately ran out of worthwhile ideas (i don't think there were many on the first record either).
he should release less music and work full time as a producer and mixer instead.

The last good Tame Impala album was released 10 years ago.
It's fucking over.
(I was there when Innerspeaker got a BNM from p4k and started the psych rock craze for hipsters).

So disappointing. A few good tracks and moments here and there, but man. It’s pretty boring. I want him to go back to the Innerspeaker/Lonerism sound so badly.

No one was balls to the walls over the moon about the lyrics or Kevin's singing, but they for sure respected the song craft and heavy psych vibe. That was the general sense, of like "Yeah they're pretty good and there are some sick moments in these songs, BUT we don't think they're the greatest thing in the world."

No one was really putting their lives and reputations on the line for Tame Impala even at their peak. There was something a little immature, corny and boyish about Tame Impala that people resisted, but that's exactly what normies like desu. In 2025, normies are doing the heavy lifting for Kevin.

I never, ever, EVER understood the Tame Impala hype. Maybe a tiny bit during the Lonerism days, but when Currents came out and everyone was sucking its dick, I just didn't get it at all.
