What exactly are the exact fundamental differences between visual kei goth and actual goth?

Actual goth is post-punk adjacent music.

Visual kei is purely aesthetic but a lot of the bands play melodic inspired metal.

They were both different kind of larping
Goth was during the naive, incipient phase, when just adding some eyeliner and looking like a skeleton was enough
Kai is several layers of decadence later, as the meta larp game has gone much deeper, with a bit of Japanese exoticism that is basically reverse larping, as the Japanese are the ultimate larpers

Visual kei often combined aspects of both post-punk and metal, look for albums such as Zi:Kills "Desert Town" or "Because" by Gilles De Rais.
