This general is dedicated to the discussion of traditional heavy metal and its many sub-genres. Before posting, please view the link below and familiarize yourself with what we do/do not allow.
Guidelines:

>Is [genre/band/album] fit for /trad/?
If you have to ask this, it probably isn’t and you should take what you want to talk about somewhere else.
>When will charts be added to the OP?
Once we finish all of the main 1980s charts and move onto the '90s.

Not very good and definitely NOT US Power Metal. If you call Frost and Fire US Power Metal you might as well call Aerosmith US Power Metal.
King of the Dead is more doomy and has more interesting songwriting but with worse vocals than Frost and Fire.

Do people even say it is? Cirith's debut is just heavy/hard, and King of the Dead has like one USPM song on it. Rest is doom & heavy
>>128150246
>Do people even say it is?
"Its first studio album, Frost and Fire (1981), featured a heavier sound,[3] generally regarded as an early example of American power metal. By its second studio album, King of the Dead (1984), it had solidified its power metal style while gravitating toward a much "darker" sound, with many considering the album among the first doom metal releases."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cirith_Ungol_(band)
>I love these two albums, 'specially the latter
I thought the screaming vocals, that basically wasn't following a melody at all (especially on King of the Dead where it sounds like he just changes between two different notes back and forth in each song) was in juxtaposition to the consistent blues licks the guitars was playing.

Huh. Well Wikipedia in terms of genres only pulls from what other people say, mostly publications that don't know shit about music (on WP Zeppelin IV has heavy metal as one of its genres for Christ's sake) so I'm not really surprised.

THe other subgenres should have some sort of logo to represent them, some sort of minimal symbol like the speed metal swirl logo. The one for black metal would obv be a pentagram, the thrash metal could be the skanerman/DRI guy but its more of a crossover or punk thing

>I find it very hard to believe that this band managed to craft a better song than Riding the Storm desu
you'll believe it when you hear it lol. and more than once, there's a lot of killer stuff on their later albums. RW in the 90s were in a really strange place, at their best they played some of the best heavy metal in the world, their songwriting was getting more consistent and assured but at the same time their lineup was wearing out/disintegrating and the tipping point came right after Masquerade, they turned into a drum machine led studio project.

huge difference, the Sasso albums have really obvious basic drum programming anyone could do after 30 minutes messing around. you can tell right away that a drummer didn't arrange those parts

I just think Wino's songs are plodding in a bad way, like he was trying to copy Chandler's slow dirges and it didn't work. look at a song like The War Starter, Chandler can easily ride 1 riff for minutes on end and keep it interesting with nuanced playing, this thing is missing from Wino's songs which makes me think he didn't understand his own bandmate's guitar style.

You know what, I can see it. The Troll comes to mind as a song that's pretty guilty of this, very slow song but to the point where it becomes somewhat plodding. (Though again, I'm such a sucker for trad doom that I still like the song lol)

Their similarity in styles is actually a bit weird when you consider their influences. While Tate was very much the evolution of his primary vocal influences - Gillan, Halford and Dickinson (with a bit of Freddie Mercury/David Byron-esque dramatic camp thrown in) -, according to the other Crimson Glory guys apparently Midnight was actually primarily into poppy folk rock like Simon & Garfunkel and Crosby Stills & Nash, and when it came to heavier music, he was only a very casual Led Zeppelin fan.

meme band as in their reputation precedes them but hardly anyone talks about their music. they secured long tours in Germany just by having Snowy in the lineup, and since Germany is a major market for trad they were suddenly getting pushed everywhere else. they play the blandest music imaginable and this kind of unwarranted success is so emblematic of the German "hard n heavy" live show circuit that they just come across as a joke to the rest of Europe. btw, Motorhead exploited German tastes with Bastards and made that country their home base in terms of album sales in one go, it's a really easy market to read

So if I read your post correctly, they're a band that's ONLY popular in one country (that is heavily biased in favor of trad, which isn't really surprising to me since a LOT of trad came from there) and because of that region-specific popularity they play all across Europe even though they don't like that style of music as much?

they're not really popular anywhere lol. any and all trad metal will sell in Germany. they have an insatiable fanbase, big enough that the quality doesn't matter. it's just a matter of getting a tour on with your act since that's how you get German marketers going, through the live circuit.

Someone recommended this in a past thread and I put it in the backlog, is the record really that good?
>>128182216
it would've been a legendary album if it came out in the 80s, which is even more incredible since the singer is the only one left from the last studio lineup (1985) and he's not even an original member. it destroys their classic stuff. I think I listened to it 10 times in a row when I first heard it, I can't even remember the last time this happened.

>It's constantly expanding as I search around for more stuff
if you haven't listened to Warlord's Free Spirit Soar yet, I highly recommend that one, another superb comeback album. not as consistent as the Glacier LP but it could be their best full-length despite that, the peaks are fucking immense.

It's a great song but it just didn't grab me like the others did, though it was very close to being a 9 so it'll likely grow on me
>Live for the Whip is the oldest song on the album, dating back to '84 I think. that one, Sands of Time and Infidel are the only pieces written in the 80s.
I had a feeling Live for the Whip was from the '80s, despite it having that modern production it felt like an old-school USPM song in structure
>if you haven't listened to Warlord's Free Spirit Soar yet, I highly recommend that one, another superb comeback album. not as consistent as the Glacier LP but it could be their best full-length despite that, the peaks are fucking immense.
This is why I need to go back to maintaining a fuckin' list, Warlord has been on my radar for quite a while and I still have yet to listen to them because I pick stuff from my library at random. I want to listen to And the Cannons of Destruction Have Begun before I check out that comeback record
>>128183273
>I want to listen to And the Cannons of Destruction Have Begun before I check out that comeback record
no you don't! at least save it for later. it's a Live Undead kind of deal where they're in the studio pretending to play live, and it has their worst singer ever Rick Cunningham ruining great songs. all you need to hear before you tackle their later stuff is the Deliver Us EP which is definitely on the same level as Nuns Have No Fun, Haunting the Chapel and In the Sign of Evil when talking about the best metal EPs of all time. that one is a top 5 USPM release and features an amazing vocal showing from Jack Rucker who unfortunately retired from music right after that recording.
the most annoying thing about this great band is that their "classic era", the Rucker lineup, only has 1 official release (the EP) and 1 more compilation song. once you're done with that, you don't have to stick to the chronology, since each lineup can be essentially called a separate project.
I could talk about this band for hours, tl;dr listen to Deliver Us right now.

Warlord's always been cursed with unstable lineups and in particular the few good vocalists they've had always left ahead of album sessions. if you want a long-form overview of their material with decent singing, you might actually want to hear the Live in Athens album before any of the studio stuff. it's nuts that they managed to pull off a great live recording despite constantly botching sessions in a controlled setting, but... whatever heh

yeah, it's just really lazy work. drum machines can be used well in metal but you need to have an idea what you want to do with them. not that there's a lot of positive examples of this in trad but take a look at Bathory's Blood on Ice, that album would lose its edge with a live drummer.
>>128184825
excellent band, each album is a good deal different from the others. I'd recommend giving them some time to sink in before you move on to the next one. they know how to play in a really messy style and can be really overwhelming on purpose. Black Death may be the most chaotic trad metal LP ever recorded, either that or the first Satan's Host album. batshit insane.

Great record, though I'd say out of the six songs here the only one that's essential listening is Fight for Your Life. That song's scarily good.
Just finished pic related. How I wish that they would've had someone in the band who could write vocal melodies or a producer who could've worked with them on that. If that would've been the case, they would've been on a bigger label at the time and sold much more units.
I'm not sure why the vocalist even bothered to sing in that gravelly low register when it doesn't sound good at all and he has this amazing natural high voice and you can hear that he's pushing hard when he's singing in his lower register. And he's keep going back to to that well of almost talk register all over this album. Just completely fucking retarded choice.
The best songs in my opinion was Symphony of Terror and Cardiac Arrest with The Crucifix as a third behind those two.

more trivia, Heavy Load recorded another album before their breakup in the 80s. it leaked to a small handful of fans but was never widely circulated. I don't have it, all I know about it is that the song Walhalla Warriors from the reunion album scored its first recording there.

>In 1987, the Wahlquist brothers kick-started the band yet again and recorded an album with ex-UFO bassist Paul Gray and guitarist Patrik Karlsson. This album was never released, though.
That demo tape was recorded sometime in 1987, so it's almost guaranteed to be related to that brief comeback. But what struck me as odd was the additional notes section for Riders of the Ancient Storm.
>Produced and mastered at Thunderload Studios in Stockholm, Sweden during 1986-2023.
Assuming everything on their page is legitimate information, are there two separate unreleased albums from 1986 and 1987?

beats me. it's possible that the 2023 album reused some preparatory recordings from when the band was officially inactive, but whether any such recordings were reused between the new album and any unreleased 80s stuff is beyond me. the timeline between StE and their 1987 breakup is really murky.

it is. and they're a very important band for continental heavy metal in general, even if their influence is not so obvious today. in Sweden they're seen as the founding fathers of their metal scene and their influence goes beyond trad. even mainstream bands like Europe (Final Countdown) are indebted to them

Makes sense, they were palling around in the mid '70s, pretty much developed the entire melodic metal sound and were one of the first bands (Swedish or not) to release a proper trad album. On the topic of Europe though, I don't really think it's odd that they were influenced by HL; considering what they started out as.

I'm fine with the songs being somewhat busy as long as the core spirit of the band stays in tact.

hard to say, imo Killing Technology is one of their best but it's a grower and some people never get to like that one. The Outer Limits is closer to prog/heavy metal but using techniques inherited from speed and thrash. the caveat is that it's also the endpoint of a 7-album evolution, so it would be like randomly checking out Seventh Son after having just discovered Killers.
if you want to get a general feel for Voivod without doing a deep delve I'd say Dimension Hatross is the best one

it was Powerslave for me too, that's why I like the idea of going straight for the middle of a run to get a general feel of a band. nothing beats going blind through a classic 4+ album arc chronologically though.
I'm really liking this Reaction LP. the first song is actually my least favorite so far (I'm on the fourth), something about the timings felt awkward, but it's only my first listen. the next ones are nicely structured with a good balance of business and restraint. this one will need a few more spins.

>ah, all right. Scald's first album is something of a classic in modern epic doom and definitely worth your time.
Noted, I'll snag it and put it in the backlog. See ya' in a few days anon

Maybe. Got the mood and a few slower sections of a ballad but also some bombastic moments
