Kendrick Lamar trucks in apotheoses. Showmanship. Thaumaturgy. Bluster. Hyperrealism. Mythos. Documentary. To Pimp A Butterfly stirs those modes together to on an album—light on samples, rich in gilt rococo G-Funk—that’s isn’t wholly unimpeachable but at its high points verges on unapproachable. By “unapproachable” I mean in the sense of “being without serious competition.” If you come for the King [Kunta], etc. etc.

Ten years since this album carved a niche for itself in the zeitgeist, its power as a picture of the times hasn’t diminished, nor has its thematic contents waned in the Year of [Oh] Lord 2025. Considering the arc of songs like “The Blacker The Berry,” though, maybe it would be nicer if the trauma, losses, and cruelties TPAB catalogs were less legible with age.

Nonetheless. I don’t feel I have much new to add that hasn’t been covered by other reviewers. I will note that the transition between “u” and “Alright” feels more deliberate and dramatic now than the impressions I clocked in the moment as a shy college senior. So it goes. Tempora mutantur, nos et mutamur in illis, as we pin on Ovid.

It should also be noted, despite Uncle Sam’s promise on “Wesley’s Theory,” Kendrick hasn’t been “Wesley [Sniped]” before 35. As of writing, he’s 38 and ongoing. And Uncle Sam is still sweating the truths Lamar spits as bullets regarding all the riches Black people have made for this whitewashed concern of ours. Some things never change, yet.

Kek me in 2015. All it took to snap me out of it was a video of some Asian dudes in a street interview talking about how white people shouldn’t be so guilty about stuff we didn’t do.
We’re too damn self critical as a race. No point in whipping ourselves if the browns don’t do it to themselves as well.

Most overrated pile of shit I've ever listened, it's lacks anything memorable, barren in melody, lacks good hooks, having zero replay value, being in relatity an 1.5 hour long mumbling of a nigger with an obnoxious voice, whining about things irrelevant to 2/3 of the earth's population. An industry plant album, bandwagoned by music media attempting to force rap to the center of music, and by an ignorant easily swayed/impressed youth, with no knowledge of music outside, lil pump, and his ilk, as well as by self-hating, low-iq wiggers. it's lowbrow nature appeal to the masses is understandable.

There are thousands of fake accounts, that exist solely to rate them 100, then go dormant, it's a raid. The fact rap is the most mainstream genre also helps, along with the constant shilling by music publications, attempting to shoehorn kendrick/rap albums into "greatest classics" for moral grandstanding/virtue signaling, and pretty much any other reason, other than it's musical merit, how "convenient" that the 1st and 3rd albums are by the same artist. The vast majority of rap fans are dumb, easily conned/swayed, they only know about pink floyd, radiohead, the Beatles, plus cRap, that's why lesser known artists have barely any albums amongst the top 200, and why so many of them are so recent. People's stupidity becomes clear in lists of greatest "any nationality" when people rank Kim Kardashian, above historical figures like Henry Ford/Thomas Edison etc... it's the same effect.
>>128161860
I'm latino, old gen z, and I despise kendrick and his retarded fans, both are scum, they're worse than swifties, the only reason Taylor Swift's albums aren't also ranked among the "GOAT" is that her fans don't hang out on music rating sites as much, and there are enough people who dislike her among "music nerds", not to mention there's no "racism connotation" to giving them a low score.

A genuine masterpiece. This is real rap and it's real truths Kendrick tells. I first listened to this album years ago and it only ages like fine wine. Some other albums have many songs with great lyrics but aren't interesting to listen to. This album is beautiful both lyrically and musically.

Arguably the best album OAT
The first time I listened to this my reaction was like “This is weird”. Now, I consider this to be a masterpiece. It completely deserves to be in the argument for the best album OAT, let alone for the best Hip-Hop album of all time!
Beats: 5/5
The album blends rap with jazz in a way no other rap album has ever done. The G-Funk on Wesley’s Theory is also beautiful. This album has some of the best beats OAT, no question. If you like west-coast rap and jazz-rap, you will love this.
Lyrics: 5/5
This album mostly talks about the lives of black people in the US. I honestly love the concept, especially when the delivery is top-tier. There are simply sooo many layers to these songs, there is surely something you have missed in your first listen. Examples:
1: Kendrick refers to the devil (Lucifer) as “Lucy”.
2: In the track “How Much A Dollar Cost” Kendrick uses the homeless man as a metaphor, but talks about him as if he was real.
3: In “I” and “U” he impersonates someone that appreciates himself and someone that despises himself.
4: The interview at the end is an interview with 2Pac that took pieces of 2Pac’s interviews and put them together to make it sound like 2Pac is actually talking to Kendrick. There are many more examples I could make.
Features: 5/5
How can’t you love these features? From Rapsody to George Clinton, the list is not really stacked, but the people that are on this record all have at least good features. It’s difficult to choose a “best feature”, are there are at least 3 5/5 feature, but in my opinion, the best feature is Thundercat’s feature, it’s just perfect when combined with George Clinton’s one.
Final rating: 5/5
Though not for complete beginners, a masterpiece. In my opinion the best Hip-Hop album of all time, maybe even the best album of all time.

You just have to listen to the album yourself, and people who don't open the lyrics and see what the songs are trying to explain or tell probably would rate it a 4.5 still because the songs itself holds such a great impact too, not only the lyricism and it's one of the best concept albums of all time, if not the best.

The greatest rap album oat
This album is the closest musical piece of art that man has gotten to perfection in this genre, decades will go on, maybe even generations until something touches Tpab. The tracklist starts off with Kendrick falling vulnerable to things constantly, needing help almost, it is extremely in depth and this is a review so I won’t fully go through it, he then proceeds to lead to ending is life in a hotel room destroying that old self basically cocooning into this butterfly (hints the name) then it leads to excellence in emotional storytelling and lyricism throughout the rest of the album as it had done through the first few songs sharing his opinion loud and clear with a song for every single emotion, he then ends it all as a poem explaining it all. As well as the connections to Good Kid m.A.A.d city with these walls where he was having intercourse with the significant other of the person who murdered his friend, this is so emotionally deep it would take hours to go into it. Overall there is not one moment where a song from Tpab would not fit and I’m sure it will be a lasting album for hundreds of years.

>full-tuition scholarship to Uni for Physics
Fair enough
>Bilingual in French and English
Fair enough
>well read
Evidently fake
>6'1'' w/ blue eyes
not even an achievement
So, basically, you got a scholarship and supposedly are fluent in french. Meaning, you're like 50% of people in a decent country but are a white supremacist. XD

That means I was chosen by God thoughever
But fr I never really said I was a White supremist, I was just saying people should recognize that White people have, in the overwhelming majority, built the modern western world and that we should be allowed to be proud of that. Also, most 19 year olds are neeting and smoking weed everyday so I'm chilling

Once I saw a comment that read "it feels unfair to other music that this album exists" and "the first time I listened to this album, I already knew I had listened to the greatest album of all time" etc..
I'm not kidding, Kendrick fans are the most obnoxious, smug, pieces of shit on the planet, they're so insufferable and ignorant, they make k-pop stans look like reasonable well-adjusted people.

No, because they're braindead borgs with no thoughts of their own, only parroting whatever fantano/the majority says. they're the crowd in the "the emperor's new clothes" tale, conformists, pretentious music snobs, who in their idiocy, believe agreeing with an artificially created consensus, makes them "special/cultured". These are the kind of imbeciles authoritarian governments are fond of, ready to do anything, if that's what it takes to be the "upstanding citizen/critic". kendrick fans are like a plague of locusts, ruining whatever place they pass by. Rap at this point is no different from pop, kendrick and his crap is no different from taylor swift's, in fact, is arguably worse.

Do you actually believe TPAB is the greatest album of all time across all genres? That seems delusional at best
