Why isn't crust punk more popular, especially in this political climate?

Because it's hackneyed, fake and gay like all forms of Hardcore Punk. Lowlives pretending to be enlightened radicals.

because on one hand you've got Chuds that get upset by the the "far extreme radical left" politics of most milquetoast normie radio rock bands imaginable like RATM or fuckin Green Day - so listening to something Aus Rotten is completely off the table.

and on the other hand you've got the average modern punk fan who's gonna be all "well this is nice enough I guess, but they don't have enough songs about trans people and black womyn"

I loved it as a teenager.
Even as an adult there were times I would love coming down off meth and drinking jamming some aus rotten or doom or leftover crack. great times

Have you checked out the RABM scene? Not all of it is crust punk, but lots is and it's pretty active.
