Jazz usually have tasteful covers but metal covers look like they were made by a middle schooler with Photoshop.

A nice cover conveys good taste which usually extends to the music. So you should judge albums by their covers.

A COVER IS THE FIRST THING TO BE PERCEIVED, BUT THE LAST TO BE CONFORMED: THE COVER CONSEQUENTIAL, NOT CAUSAL.

not true, because Coltrane has mediocre album covers, and his music is outstanding

personally I find jazz album covers are often highly derivative and unoriginal
how many are a profile view photo of a saxophonist or trumpeter reduced to a blue or orange monochrome, or silhouette

Is Reneissance art bad just because everything is a bunch of naked guys?

why include the obi's??
Anonymous No.128192477 [Report] >>128194465
>>128192226
no because renaissance art is packed full of imagery in the scenes and subjects chosen, composition, light and technique
whereas jazz covers are just lets get a photo of the performer and shove it through a filter to make it look arty
comparing the two is laughable
blue note were the worst offenders

they knew how to make simple and solid look fancy

jazz album covers had good colors and typography, the photography itself is usually low-effort

to gullible retards susceptible to marketing research, sure. lots of boring derivative jazz albums have kino covers

and the jazz that caters to hardcore fans today with labels like criss cross and steeplechase look awful. my friend says they look like CDs you'd see at starbucks

Dumb.
Metal covers are usually intended to shock and disturb, you can't do that with a boring photo of a fat guy playing sax.

yeah i dont like this at all, ask a 5 year old to draw something instead if this is what a guy who works for a jazz label will come up with.

i hope the stuff on the inside is more creative and willing to take risks than the stuff that is on the outside

for sure. It's a lot of very heady advanced post bop with top tier musicianship. Steeplechase has the same with some more outside playing on their releases. Both are carrying the torch that the albums in OP's image lit
Here's one of my favorites (and coincidentally one of the worst covers)

they do look like a poor photoshop rush job but criss cross makes great fucking music so i forgive them. when i think of cool jazz album covers these days it's usually from random artists on random labels

okay but why the fuck would a sax musician want to shock and disturb a jazz audience

I like Waldron, but I've never actually heard that album. I just like to post it because it almost looks like Scenery's opposite.

The best jazz covers have pretty ladies on the cover. Prove me wrong.

I appreciate the utility in these covers. You can easily tell the headliner and lineup without needing to see a back cover or looking of the personnel, which is nice the the digital age

Jazz doesn't really need a graphic concept. You just need a good pic of the cat, some cool colors and fonts and you're set. Oh, and some uncommon title like "paroxysm" or "rendezvouz". Rock and Metal bands are much more pretentious in that sense. They need a whole new album concept each time around.
