Based working class gear enjoyer.

I'm not sure if it's affordable but I heard that Shure makes excellent mics

I wonder how good they are.

I have a bunch of SM 57's. My go to mic for just about everything

57 for instruments, 58 for vox.

They’re about $100 and they’re solid mics. They’re clean and they can take a serious beating. You can find Behringer clones for $20 that are just as good though.

How big did your band get?
I’ll take your word for it and get a Behringer.

Why 57 for instruments and 58 for vocals?

Behringer XM8500 is a Shure SM58 clone. I would try that one out, and maybe buy a Shure if you get really serious about touring. I’ve never owned one myself, but I’ve rented one from Guitar Center and most venues we played had one on stage so I’ve used them plenty of times. It’s a pretty generic house mic that a lot of venues have on hand. We played about a few shows and released a demo about ten years ago but I’m not posting it here. I have a professional job now and I don’t want it gaining the wrong kind of attention.

I appreciate that information, anon. And don’t worry, I’m not pressing.
Out of curiosity though, is an sm58 (or clones) good for recording vocals? Or do you recommend something else?
I have an AT2020, but I’m interested in getting an sm58 to toss around and whatnot.

I have an AT2035, which is very similar I think, but it depends on what you’re trying to record. We were a metal band, so I wanted it to sound as nasty as possible. SM58s can take a beating on stage, that’s for sure. My biggest piece of advice for recording vocals is try different things. For metal (or anything remotely aggressive) don’t record line-in, straight into your computer. It sounds too clean. Get the sound you want from your amplifier and mic the amp instead. It’s much louder and crunchier. Same for instruments.

Idk on mine it sayd it was made in Mexico.
I figure it's not that complicated to build a mic, you could do it even in Mexico

58 comes with a grille with foam inside, to block plosives, but that takes some of the higher freqs from it. So it's usually a good choice for live sets, because it's sturdy and its frequency response is quite close to the median

57 has no foam out of the box and can be used with instruments too, but the internals are the same as in 58. And you could add your own pop filter on top and use it for vox too

lol that’s funny.
>>128201122
I appreciate that advice. I’ve tried practicing recording directly into my computer, and indeed it does sound too clean.
So hook up the 58 to an amp, then hook the 57 in front of the amp recording into PC?
>>128201209
Really? That’s interesting actually.

Pretty much. The best way I can describe it is that you’re trying to capture the sound, not your voice if that makes sense. Get the sound you want out of the amp (or as close as you can get) and then try to record that, instead of recording yourself directly and adding the effects later. You want the mic near the center of the speaker, and a few inches back. You’ll have to play around with it, but it sounds much better than recording direct in.

Yeah, I get what you’re saying. Anon, thank you so much, man. I really appreciate that information. I’m gonna save this information I learned here tonight, and my next /mu/ purchase is probably going to be an sm58 (or clone).

The 57 has a smaller head to control how/where you want it placed. Also needs a better pop filter for vox, but the 58 doesn't need.

So do amps have an XLR plugin for mics? Does it matter if it’s a tube?
Anonymous No.128205719 [Report] >>128205871
>>128205575
You need a PA for performance. Acoustic guitar amps have XLRs... mostly because they're just mini PA systems too. Not regular guitar amps.

That’s a shame. I wish I could just pop it into an amp.

What’s a good amp for vocals?
