Record label aesthetics.
Are there labels now that have unified design aesthetics, or is this a thing of the past? What do you think of this concept? I think it's cool personally.

For example Factory Records.

I know a few
I like it
some people say it can limit the artist's creativity, but I think the artist should focus on the music instead

the jazz label Criss Cross has a unified aesthetic but it looks like dogshit

at least the music makes up for the 3 minutes of graphic design

Yeah, I don't see why you would commit to doing a similar style for all your albums if your graphic design is so shitty.

maybe it looks 'ugly' but it fits the music very well

what an insult to the music kek

4AD albums from the '80s and '90s had a common recognizable aesthetics

it's not always about ugly or pretty anon
crisscross jazz have that formalistic 'neobop' sound so their covers try to go with that groove
other neobop labels go along with it

it looks generic and irrelevant. if the music is generic and irrelevant too then yeah, i guess it fits.

you're missing the point of album covers

to draw attention and give you an idea of what the music might be like?
Anonymous No.128211494 [Report] >>128211673

most of their albums are straight-ahead jazz or subdued avant-jazz, that anon is right that they're ugly but the understated and simple covers do kinda work for them, a flashier cover would feel ill-fitting
Anonymous No.128211636 [Report] >>128211673
>>128211481
well yeah, and one could argue that that's why they could be considered 'good covers'
but you're also forgetting to consider a couple things such as target audience
'crisscross jazz' is pretty much the definition of jazz for jazz musicians, so if you come across one there's a chance you're already into this style of music... they are not looking to expand their business much
you're also not considering that some covers need more info on them, like classical music records usually need to tell you stuff such as composer, ensemble, director and so on while also fitting the label aesthetics
something else is the visual reach: not all covers look good in the big LP format, and not all look good in CD format... graphic designers know that when they make a cover, so that's part of why cd reissues may have different covers
and so on

Yes there a few that still do. Always loved Vaughan Oliver's stuff (the 4AD pixies covers guy)
