The vaccine debate is so stupid. It's a scientific question but it gets polarized because of people's pre-existing political / tribal loyalties which is completely irrational. In fact, the earliest people who were warning about the pandemic when it was beginning to spread (but before people were masking) were survivalist libertarian types, while it was the liberals who were downplaying it (odd thing), but once it actually kicked off then those same libertarians became vaccine skeptics, even though vaccines from a deadly disease are actually good from a survival standpoint.

I distinctly remember this. Kamala Harris was saying she wouldn't trust any Trump vaccine. This was like December-January 2020 during that weird liminal period when COVID was spreading but before lockdowns began. Then once the lockdowns happened people flipped to completely opposite positions from what they had weeks before.

Maybe part of it is that very early on, the government was downplaying the threat because they didn't want people to panic, so the people who normally distrust whatever government agencies say (i.e. schizos, libertarians, etc.) were more inclined to believe the pandemic would be bad, their little antennas were telling them something in that case. But then once governments did begin to take it seriously, they flipped to their opposite.

Also the election-year politics played a role. The libs early on were downplaying it, because they suspected Trump might take advantage of it somehow, and they didn't want Trump to win at anything, but then once the pandemic started spreading, they figured that it was actually bad for Trump so the libs went 110% on lockdowns and masking, while Trump's supporters denied there was any problem and it was just a flu. It's a bit like the Democrats denying inflation was a problem in 2024.
