there's a tiny band/orchestra in every vinyl. take good care of them.

I guess i kinda get it it just absolutely blows my mind. How fucking tiny and variable are these grooves that the machine can read? Unless i'm totally misunderstanding what's happening.
It's an amazing world we live in let me tell you anons.

yeah its all super tiny but you can think of a mono groove as a physical representation of the waveform. the stylus tracks it making the armature waggle side to side, coils and magnets at the other end of the armature turn that movement into a tiny electrical current, amplitude and frequency being dictated by the shape of the groove, then its just a matter of doing a bit of EQ and amplifying it. but yeah it is super cool that you can get good fidelity out of a purely electro-mechanical system.
stereo though involves flipping everything over 45 degrees and having the stylus go up and down as well as left to right, having 2 separate sets of coils and magnets and pulling 2 separate channels of information out of that

Basically, it doesn’t need to "read" anything. The way the stylus moves up and down is the same way your speaker needs to move in and out to make the sound.

Stereo sounds complex, but all it really is is that the up and down is L+R (i.e. mono), and side to side is L-R (i.e. the difference between the two speakers). This means mono and stereo records and players were all compatible.

So you are telling me if you can take a piece of rubber and rub it in a certain way you can recreate every sound in the world?

Within reasonable bounds; you have to remember that sound as we interpret it is just air moving back and forth, so that’s all that needs to be replicated
