Hah, my exact thoughts. I don't really know how zooming-alpha you'd have to be to not recognize how fucking hard those songs slap.
Like, yeah... the 'stomp clap' thing and millennial whoop is cringe anyway you slice it. Arcane Fries are uncool french Canadians that travel around like the fucking McPoyle family. But this album isn't even particularly 'folky', it's straight up indie rock, just more cinematic and grandiose, which was the style at the time. But it's honestly hard to explain how fresh these guys felt back then, even David Bowie was an early adopter.
"Neighbourhood #3 (Power Out)" is a 10/10 indie rock song. "Rebellion (Lies)" is one of the best songs of the entire decade.
There's a handful of good to great songs on Neon Bible and Suburbs, but they have not been relevant for a very very long time.
