Any orchestral suite versions of Mozart's operas? I've said it before but if I were a contemporary composer, one of my primary sources of artistic labor would be composing orchestral suites of all of the great operas, so those who don't like opera can finally enjoy some of the great music from Verdi, Mozart, Wagner, Puccini, Rossini, Janáček, Strauss, etc etc

And? He also conducted Tchaikovsky who he was also critical of. Mahler probably liked Mozart, but did not "adore" him like the anon claimed. Neither did Debussy. And if you only accept a straight hateful attitud, then of course we even have that, which is Ives.
Most composers would find it unreasonable to make hateful comments even if they did not like particular composer or style. If we had all their thoughts, who knows what we'd find.

They do each perform the work differently, presenting and emphasizing distinct emotions and colors, so it often boils down to which emotions and colors I wish to hear expressed when choosing between performances which are all superbly played, but still

What the fuck are you talking about? No offence, but it looks like you didn't even read my post and projected some nonsense onto it. You completely missed the point. I literally said at the start
>Everyone already knows Bach, Mozart and Beethoven are the greatest, nobody's disputing that.
That's not me saying "Shakespeare? Pah." It's the exact opposite, it's acknowledging their greatness and then saying it's boring to keep repeating the obvious forever.
Developing taste isn't about pretending the canon doesn't exist, but about understanding why it exists and then exploring beyond it. You've got the logic completely upside down. Scarlatti and Scriabin simply do things those three don't. That's literally a fact and it has nothing to do them being better or worse. It can even mean going deeper into those three greats, like appreciating Mozart's eccentric 15th piano sonata or his late fantasias instead of just the most popular pieces.
My post was reacting to the mindless attitude of people who think parroting "Bach, Mozart, Beethoven are the best and everything else is irrelevant" is itself a sign of sophistication. What fucking bitterness are you talking about? What bemoaning of their popularity? Can you even read?

Sigh... Way to deflect from my original statement, in which I claimed certain composers did not adore Mozart, and Mahler *was* one of those composers, and I also provided 2 additional examples.
You can't convey Mahler's thoughts and philosophy in one post, you will have to search deep into his letters and writings, he valued Beethoven and Wagner above all, everything else was secondary to him and his philosophy, of Mozart he probably only really "adored" the opera, because it's programmatic, otherwise he thought of him as less deep and profound, and if you don't care enough, why are you even talking?

So..here's a question for you anons. I don't really visit this thread, but, I guess I ought to ask...

I've been listening to a lot of Erik Satie's work lately. Gnossienes and Gymnopedies. I like 'em. Listened to all of them. But it's getting a bit repetitive. Are there some other works which are generally similar in 'feeling'?

Start with Chopin, nocturnes, etudes, preludes, waltzes. Then move to larger scale works, the ballades (along with scherzi, sonatas etc.) - which are pretty much some of, if not the greatest solo piano music ever composed(particularly the last one). 1st ballade is pretty iconic and accessible (so is the 2nd).
Satie is minimalistic, his style is repetitive. But the entirety of the French romantic school owes its existence to Chopin.

But oh well, if you insist, check out Liszt's harmonies poétiques et religieuses, annees de pelerinage, Fauré's nocturnes, barcarolles and ballade, Scriabin's etudes op.8.

When talking about talent I mean it in a somewhat traditional musical sense, like having really strong intuition for orginazing resonance and dissonance into something that just "feels right", isn't pretentious, but still stands out, is cathartic and powerful
