Ironic is such an awful song. No idea how it was a hit.

>awful song becomes mega hit and her defining song
kind of ironic, don't you think?

it's not even catchy though. The chrous is just her yelling with loud obnoxious guitars and the verse is borderline spoken with barely any melody.

>yelling
could explain its success, the biggest artists at the time were world-class belters like Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey...etc

there's a difference between some shit singer yelling in a rock song vs talented singers belting in a pop/ballad song.

Most of her examples aren’t even ironic, unless that’s the irony then she’s a genius

this album is funny because alanis is an industry plant that they tried to make sound "alt", so every song is like a combination of a bunch of 90s indie tropes. that part where the phaser pedals go off in the bridge is cool.

because of the chorus and the video.

Had half of RHCP play on the album to give it undeserved rock cred.

The 90s had tons of these kind of acts even though they still weren't actually that bad yet because the musicianship and songwriting were still at a high level.

why do you regard it as some kind of conspiracy (industry plant, lol, her parents were school teachers, btw) that alanis and the other people helping her make the album used the same kind of soundscape popular at the time? i mean, that's literally what almost everyone recording in the time period does and why different eras have distinctive styles.
