You know these 50CD or whatever boxes "the complete [album name] sessions" where you get like 20 versions of the same song being played over and over again until you shit yourself out of boredom? Well, sometimes these boxsets hold some hidden gems that are completely worth your time. Share these in this thread if you've ever stumbled upon one.

For example:
The Stooges - Freak Take 1 (from Complete Fun House Sessions) - 17 minutes of crazy free jazz improvisation that gave birth to L.A. Blues: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Or7QvshEHBw

Miles Davis - Konda (from Complete Jack Johnson Sessions) - beautifully minimal, long impro with wonderful keyboards: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOPM01IaRo8

at first i thought this was a box set for their entire discography. but a whole box for just 1 album? how many cds are in the box? is it padded with demos and live material and all that filler?

The unique recording situation of Fun House kind of lends itself to a box set. They just set up like a live band in the studio and just recorded dozens of complete takes of all the songs one song at a time.

It's every recording from the sessions. Multiple versions of all songs but also false starts, tune-ups and them talking to each other
7 cds, complete runtime is just under 8 hours lol

Best of the Miles box sets is easily In a Silent Way. More than any of the others it gives you a great chronological document of the band and style that led up to the album through months of trial and error, and the outtakes are just uniformly excellent.

Bob Dylan's Cutting Edge 1965-66 and Complete Basement Tapes sets are full of gemmies

So you feel like you're in the studio hanging out with Iggy and the stooges while you wait for the heroin and underage hookers to arrive

but that's why I didn't include the studio banter in that, I can figure why e.g. the bit at the end of the original Life On Mars? recording by Bowie is of cute historical cultural value, but bothering with literal unrelated noise is wacko basedfacing wank

Henry "Im better than you because Ive traveled to 3rd world countries and you haven't" Rollins has a nice promo video on one of the deluxe reissues costing hundreds of shekels
Im just twistin his balls being a sarcastic cunt, Rollins has humbled himself quite a bit over the years. A long way from his days writing "Get In The Van"
Touring made him an ornery curmudgeon over the years

Abbey Road had a Super Deluxe version released in 2019 with a whole bunch of sessions and outtakes. I think this version of I Want You (She's So Heavy) is better than what was on the final album. Billy Preston fucking shreds on the organ at the end of the song.
Caught on tape right at the beginning is the band's reaction to a noise compaint because they were playing so loud that houses around the studio could hear them jamming which is funny

My favorite of the deluxe editions was the White Album because we got the full Esher demos in not-shit quality.

I don't get why the Stones haven't released any of these. They're probably some of the few I'd actually buy.

they stopped with the live take approach early on. for a band with a famously 'loose' feel/sound, the songs were actually sculpted with precision, sometimes over years. there are songs on tattoo you that date all the way back to IORR. plus, even if there is vault material in semi-finished condition, the vocals almost never rise above tentative scatting, since lyrics would apparently be jagger's final task. the upcoming edition of black and blue might have what you're looking for: a bunch of studio jams/rehearsals, though i'm not sure how much of the material was later fashioned/beaten down into workable tracks

The first CD I had of The Who Sell Out had twice as many songs and I never realised for years they were extras. A couple of the songs are better that the original released ones: Melancholia, Early Morning Cold Taxi,

As are many more of the bootleg series. Another Self Portrait and Fragments (Time Out of Mind) spring to mind.
