were you studying music, or just fucking around?

i'm about 5 months in and i'm enjoying it very much. at the moment i'm just learning from youtube videos, but i need to start looking around for jam sessions or other gatherings so i can improve.
i heard this chick this evening on backporch music

and i'm thinking about trying to work out her song by ear. i want to sound more fiddly, and hope to emulate her looseness

In the orchestra as a non-music major. Get a teacher. It's not an easy instrument to learn alone. That should help with looseness.

some critique would definitely be helpful. there's only so much one can pay attention to when learning something so nuanced.
a professional violinist married into my family, and i've asked him for some pointers, but he lives in another city and doesn't play folk music.
i've taken to playing in front of a mirror sometimes to check out my bow hold and bowing. i also have been developing my ear with a tuner, as this is the first fretless instrument i've ever picked up; you don't really have to worry about that kind of stuff with e.g. a guitar.

and i can't for the life of me figure out how to even begin with vibrato
it's not critical to folk music, but it's a nice embellishment in the right place

Rock your hand up and down a little bit to a metronome, first on quarter notes, then eighth notes, then triplet notes, then sixteenth notes, and so on until clean.

i've heard people liken hand vibrato to knocking on a door
however i'm having difficulty figuring out how to rock my hand without moving the entire instrument
it seems like when doing vibrato you must hold the instrument entirely by the chin rest, although i'm not completely sure about that
i know it takes a long time to become proficient at it, but i figure i might as well start somewhere...

Anon why aren't you holding the instrument entirely by the chin rest? You should be able to safely extend your arm.

i mostly do hold it by the chin rest, but watching videos has made me realize that it isn't required all the time, so i've been experimenting with just resting it on my shoulder sometimes
vibrato seems like the only time when you absolutely must hold it by the chin rest

Careful then. It's easy to drop your violin doing that.
