except for the Beatles, they gotta be the band that's been most ahead of anyone else in their genre at their peak

They were.
Don't let Dave or anyone else tell you otherwise.

They were definitely very unusual for a metal band
A metal band doing instrumentals like Orion was just unheard of in the 80s

Yes, the Beatles perfected boyband pop, however, One Direction is still better.

if the whole group had died in a plane crash or something after MoP they'd be remembered as the greatest metal band of all time. all went downhill after that

Reminder that Cliff meant it to be another bass solo, but the band complained so he transcribed the other bits for them.
This is why Metallica took a downturn. He wasn't just a bassist. He was the classicist and theoryfag of the bunch. You already hear his loss on Justice, but it got worse over time.

yes, the taylor swift of metal bands was truly the peak of the genre and way ahead of their time!

Yeah it seems like Cliff was the driver of their occasional flirt with more experimental formats.
You don't hear any of that on the black album anymore and on Justice, it's just the instrumental that is they driest they produced so far

Yeah they'd be considered a cult band, like Husker Du.
But they would not be widely known among normies like today, because the black album with the ballads brought them mainstream success

Kill em’ All changed the game. Lightning elevated the game. Puppets perfected the game. Simple as that.

He gave them that neoclassical flare.. Probably is intangible how much, even if he didn't help write something. Just having the guy in the studio with you nudging you in the right direction is enough.
But Hetfield is still the riffmeister. They never lost that. Just was never as epic as before.

Scratch that, I guess the actual label is progressive thrash. They were no longer progressive thrash after Cliff. I don't dislike some of the other stuff though.

You're not read. I already said:
>You already hear his loss on Justice, but it got worse over time.
Whatever is good about Justice is probably leftover ideas when Cliff was still alive. Why weren't they capable of that level of melodic writing afterwards? Then just going full on biker dad mode up to now.

Cliff was the guy who loved all those epic themes about war, death etc. By themselves James and Lars can't really do anything except very dry-sounding songs about their feels.
