the whole concept of a music 'critic' is so strange to me, why do would you care what other people think about music?

honestly I have no idea. I can read an in-depth review by an informed and eloquent writer and while I might learn a bunch of extraneous shite the one thing I will have absolutely zero idea about when I've read it is whether I will like the music or not.

The concept isn't strange at all, everyone is a critic. What is strange is giving a fuck about literally anyone else's opinion other than your own.

hearing someone formulate an opinion well helps you analyze and think about music in your own way, even if their specific opinion should have no influence on your own.

because they are engaging and thoughtful writers, who are extremely knowledgeable about music history can make you think about the artist in a context you would never have considered.

but agreed that star/grade/numerical ratings are useless

People who are actually passionate about their hobbies care what other people have to say about the hobby. Doesn't mean their word is the gospel but it does mean you're more educated than the dunce who doesn't read or study their field of interest.

then you'll listen to an album (or watch a movie; same logic), love it, and then see critics gave it 5/10 and you'll think "fuck, all those times i rejected everything below a 7 from fantano. so much art, so much joy, denied because of my worship of the bald one

what's more surprising is that it's the supposedly enlightened music crowd that actually listens to critics instead of normies

I think it was important at the time when you had limited access to music and little money to buy records. Now when you basically have the whole music library of humanity at hand, we don't need them anymore. You can find your own path.
