It's strange Pantheon doesn't get the widespread underground love that bands like Absurd do. Early and very influential, with a massive discography from quality straightforward black metal to more bizarre schizophrenic like stuff; something for everyone to love yet never considered as forefathers of USBM.
Aryan Rebirth for me is their magnum opus. A massive album dealing with themes I one day hope to fully grasp.

He only says as much to distance himself from something he sees as lame and gay in retrospect, while still getting the credit for making good art. Even if in composing those albums (Self titled, DSEV, HLTO, Filosofem) he was trying to sound different than his contemporaries, that is just referred to as experimenting musically, and doing something unique; which only serves to create something more special and interesting. While other bands were copying one another and trying to fit in neatly within the established sound, Varg channelled a vision of Black Metal that was solely his own. But rest assured, it is Black Metal containing: tremolo-picked riffs, screamed vocals, high-treble distorted guitars, blast beats, low-fidelity production, dark lyrics, and atmosphere. You can't make music with all of those factors and just say oh no it's actually something else. Why? Because I said so. That's not how categorisation of music and genre works. He didn't make his music in a vacuum , he was influenced by those that came before him, and also to an extent by his contemporaries in the scene in which he participated in actively. Burzum also went on to influence more bands than almost any other Black Metal project/band, and Burzum's Black Metal progeny definitely also make Black Metal.
