Carry some bag that you can crush into your pocket, pull out bag, uncrush it, put helmet in bag.

Now you are just a person carrying stuff in bag like 90% of people in towns/cities.

And you want soda's, beers, snack bars, a box of food or something? And you want to save it for when not near town?
Well now you have a helmet bag to carry that stuff too.

When mountain biking? Always. When riding with other people? Always. When riding to the store or to work? No. Helmets are just one more kind of protective gear, and like anything else we adjust the gear we wear according to the activity we're doing. The only time I think there's a question in my mind is for road cycling, which is a low risk activity, but on the other hand a helmet can actually be more aero than no helmet... I've also ridden easily 50,000+ road miles with nothing but a cycling cap but I wear a helmet for this too since I've got a couple nice ones already, so I might as well use them.

it will however reduce the g-load on your braincase/brain as ypur head hits the ground
bike accidents that are fatal/serious usually are precisely because of head injuries
wearing a helmet is worth it as it can prevent negative outcomes
you'd find it ridiculous for a person using an angle grinder to not wear eye protection because "hey if that thing shatters bad enough the goggles wont help me"

12/1/2023, 3:25:29 PM No.1964730
On roads basically always. Road quality is variable around me, plus cars, plus foot traffic. I am less worried about it saving me from a oncoming semi and more concerned with having to dodge into a bad spot or brake unexpectedly.
On dedicated paved trail, I don't feel like I really need it but often times I have it because I eventually have to hit road. Or light dirt.
On light single/double track I know that I'm underbiking it so I wear the helmet. It already saved me once, fell off a hill and stopped myself with my limbs and my bike with my helmeted head.
The exception is forest roads, gravel paths, rail, and canal trail. The traffic is minimal, the terrain is comfy, and the elevation isn't insane. If it is a big downhill on a gravel road I will put the helmet on but then I just take it right off to hang on the handlebars. I usually try to bike to wherever I want to ride but sometimes it's worth hopping on the train or driving to get to the good completely separated trail.

i would think breathing gets really hard in one of those. in terms of fog there are pinlocks you can put on from the inside of the visor they protect the visor from fogging up and they work pretty well over ~8ยฐC.

Maybe the dual sport/ adventure bike helmets provide better air, but a chinbar is a great idea. most head injuries on bikes invole the chin

This is accurate.
In the past i've been forced off the road multiple times during night rides. Now, whenever i ride my bike at night, I usually mount a 7000 lumen flashlight to my handlebars in addition to my regular bike light. Whenever i get the feeling that oncoming cars are trying to push me off the road on purpose, i turn the dial up to full power and keep it on until I have passed them. They usually brake and or return to their lanes.

I rode with no helmet for years, and suddenly I got a "fast bike" and that sentiment changed.

People close to me nag the shit out of me when I just want to go for a cruise without a helmet. I know my path to work / neighbourhood, so it seems unreasonable.

But conversely, I'd be worried if they didn't wear one.

other than looking like a fag (you already do, you are riding a bicycle) i can't really think of a reason not to wear one.
but seriously, does anyone look cool riding a bike? maybe the one guy on the cover of that real volume where he is riding on the seaside but that is not real life. mr romance looks kinda cool, but he smokes so maybe that just cancels out the fact that he's riding a bike.

I'm really surprised to see people not wearing helmets especially people who ride the ubiquitous electric scooters that go pretty fast nowadays. I see grown men like in their 40s who are probably fathers, in professional attire, who don't wear helmets. Young retards I can understand. But it seriously blows my mind to see adults not wearing them. I honestly cannot even think of a reason not to wear them if you're a father, you have a decent career. These electric scooters go fast enough and are sensitive enough, you could hit something and fly off it going 15-20 mph. What the fuck are you doing.

27 professional racers died during a race in the years since 2003, when UCI made helmets mandatory. These 27 are excluding known cardiac causes.
12 racers died in the two decades prior to this rule, including Andrey Kivilev which triggered this uci rule.
Medical care and knowledge about the brain has increased during this time. But so has the number of cyclists.

Nope, BITD you were sized on frames differently. The classic "fist full of seatpost" or standover the bike(with the riding shoes) and lift it up. If you got an inch-2inches from the ground on each wheel it fits.

This is also why you might see many vintage frames in larger sizes, they sized them taller back then, and since the stems were mostly one height(no nitto technomics) you wanted enough stack to run the stem up, or slammed.

Modern bikes always look weird to me.

Heโ€™s crying while retelling it, how scared he and his family were, etc.

Heโ€™s telling this story on the backdrop showing him riding a bike around on streets, while wearing no helmet. The retardation is unbelievable

Riding on a "bike lane" WITH CARS? Helmet.
So you recognize the value and safety that a helmet provides, wearing them in some situations, but still refusing to wear them in others? So youโ€™re not an idiot who wonโ€™t wear one because it โ€œlooks dumbโ€ or โ€œmesses up my hairโ€ because you do wear them, so what reason is there to not wear one in all biking situations?

in my younger HS and college days I never wore a helmet. I was coming of age in the height of the whole fixie dirtbag indie sleeze era and no one wore helmets back then. I am so lucky that nothing happened given how reckless we were.

I never stopped riding but once I got a nicer all-road/gravel type bike it put me on the path of revamping and maturing my whole approach and now I don't even go for a test ride around the block without my helmet on. I see parents with little kids out on our greenbelt trails with no helmets and it's genuinely upsetting to see how irresponsible they're being with their children. They're not even 'poor and ignorant' types who don't know better, they probably actually just think wearing a helmet is gay and for pussies.

sorry to hear it friend but at least you survived and were given another chance. i used to be a die hard no helmet type of guy but i started wearing one because of what you described or rather the fear of it. there are lots of good looking helmets that are also light and fast out there now to suit whoever's needs so it's no great shakes to just pick one, put it on and hopefully mitigate becoming a vegetable for life in the case of a crash.

Yes, I always wear a helmet. Last year I had a wipeout while cycling on road at like 30 KM/H and I fractured my wrist, fucked my knee and a bunch of skin abrasions, but I had a helmet on and it saved me from dropping iq points.
Helmet had a huge dent in the front and the back was really scratched and dented as well. I'm still wearing one of those skateboard-style helmets instead.

Nothing saves you if you get shreked by a dipshit doing 40+ and not noticing peds/bikers, but every time Iโ€™ve been hit by a car itโ€™s been low speed, dipshit pulling out without looking, turning without looking, etc. a helmet does a lot of good if you get clipped at low speed and get flipped to the ground. I wear a helmet in the trees or rocks and when sharing the road with cars.

it used to be that the only people riding bicycles or similar things were confined to a small group of people. but now with the explosion of ebikes and escooters, there are so many more normies riding shit, and they usually are doing it without helmets. it absolutely blows my mind, just that normal people are riding around, usually in crowded city streets, with these electric bikes and scooters, usually people who are less experienced handling such devices, and dont at all consider the lack of safety theyre giving themselves. people riding e-scooters on busy city streets alongside cars and dont at all consider one wrong turn from the car, or they stumble over a break in the road, and they land on their fucking head. parents without helmets, riding shit with their kids without helmets. working professionals who clearly are smart and have stuff in life to live for just riding around not giving a shit.

i truly dont understand the thought process. i guess its because they think it will mess up their hair or something.

the most head injuries in the US are from car crashes but good luck getting people to wear helmets in their cars. but everyone "knows" that bikes are dangerous as fuck and you're going to instantly die if you don't wear your helmet.
the odds of a life-changing head injury on either vehicle is low, but if you advocate helmets just in case, you better start strapping one on for every car trip, it's much more likely in one.

Except there are literally no studies conclusively showing that bicycle helmets actually reduce the chance of injury or death, per hour ridden or per mile.
Go ahead, look it up and try to prove me wrong.
The testing regime for bicycle helmets has nothing to do with real world crashes.
In short, society just agreed at some point that when you're cycling you need to wear a helmet, but when you're a pedestrian, or driving a car, or climbing a ladder, or playing soccer, you don't.
This view is based on literally nothing. No studies show that cycling is actually more dangerous than any of those other activities.
It's all based on vibe and feels.

So yeah, wear a helmet if it makes you feel better. But be aware that it is then inconsistent not to wear a helmet at all times.

>If it's so fucking obvious that bicycle helmets reduce the number of injuries and deaths compared to riding without one in real world conditions, surely there must be plenty of studies proving this?
what "studies" are you looking for exactly? you want studies that look at all bicycle crashes and see how many people ended up with massive head injuries vs. those who didnt?

I just want to know why it's necessary to wear a helmet on a bicycle, but not in a car, or running, or whatever. Based on facts and data, not feels and "common sense".

nta but the answer is that by wearing one you are signaling to normies that you accept their regime in which cyclists are responsible for everything and motorists are responsible for nothing

My state requires riders under 18 to wear a helmet, and even though I'm a grown ass man I've still been stopped by police at least one time for not wearing a helmet

I think riding without a helmet is safer in a way, since during a bad crash you'll likely just die instead of ending up a useless cripple that can't even rope, doesn't really matter if you live in a country with euthanasia though

I do almost all my riding on a safe rail to trail route. Wearing a helmet is just a pain in the neck for basically no value add.

I also hate clipless pedals, and I feel like it's for the same reason.

cycling is for fags
I walk
I drive
I fly
I ride transit
But I will NOT pedal the bicycle with the seat that splits my scrotum in half while it's shoved halfway up my colon

Yes. I'm already retarded enough without getting a serious concussion from falling and adding my precious people goo to the pavement.

Also I really cannot afford a ticket, all it takes is one bored cop to fuck up your whole day.

Yes I remember going downhill about 30mph hitting a bump and skidding head first on my helmet for what felt like a whole second before I started rolling. Since then I have never not rode without a helmet.
