Carry some bag that you can crush into your pocket, pull out bag, uncrush it, put helmet in bag.

Now you are just a person carrying stuff in bag like 90% of people in towns/cities.

And you want soda's, beers, snack bars, a box of food or something? And you want to save it for when not near town?
Well now you have a helmet bag to carry that stuff too.

When mountain biking? Always. When riding with other people? Always. When riding to the store or to work? No. Helmets are just one more kind of protective gear, and like anything else we adjust the gear we wear according to the activity we're doing. The only time I think there's a question in my mind is for road cycling, which is a low risk activity, but on the other hand a helmet can actually be more aero than no helmet... I've also ridden easily 50,000+ road miles with nothing but a cycling cap but I wear a helmet for this too since I've got a couple nice ones already, so I might as well use them.

balding is caused by hair follicle growth cycle that's vulnerable to DHT in the normal male endocrine cycle

it will however reduce the g-load on your braincase/brain as ypur head hits the ground
bike accidents that are fatal/serious usually are precisely because of head injuries
wearing a helmet is worth it as it can prevent negative outcomes
you'd find it ridiculous for a person using an angle grinder to not wear eye protection because "hey if that thing shatters bad enough the goggles wont help me"

On roads basically always. Road quality is variable around me, plus cars, plus foot traffic. I am less worried about it saving me from a oncoming semi and more concerned with having to dodge into a bad spot or brake unexpectedly.
On dedicated paved trail, I don't feel like I really need it but often times I have it because I eventually have to hit road. Or light dirt.
On light single/double track I know that I'm underbiking it so I wear the helmet. It already saved me once, fell off a hill and stopped myself with my limbs and my bike with my helmeted head.
The exception is forest roads, gravel paths, rail, and canal trail. The traffic is minimal, the terrain is comfy, and the elevation isn't insane. If it is a big downhill on a gravel road I will put the helmet on but then I just take it right off to hang on the handlebars. I usually try to bike to wherever I want to ride but sometimes it's worth hopping on the train or driving to get to the good completely separated trail.

Yeah after I fractured my skull (collapsing like a card tower out of nowhere) and got small bleeds on the brain while being totally unconscious lying in the road. I broke my collar bone of course but that was minor in comparion.

In the past i've been forced off the road multiple times during night rides. Now, whenever i ride my bike at night, I usually mount a 7000 lumen flashlight to my handlebars in addition to my regular bike light. Whenever i get the feeling that oncoming cars are trying to push me off the road on purpose, i turn the dial up to full power and keep it on until I have passed them. They usually brake and or return to their lanes.

I'm really surprised to see people not wearing helmets especially people who ride the ubiquitous electric scooters that go pretty fast nowadays. I see grown men like in their 40s who are probably fathers, in professional attire, who don't wear helmets. Young retards I can understand. But it seriously blows my mind to see adults not wearing them. I honestly cannot even think of a reason not to wear them if you're a father, you have a decent career. These electric scooters go fast enough and are sensitive enough, you could hit something and fly off it going 15-20 mph. What the fuck are you doing.

Nope, BITD you were sized on frames differently. The classic "fist full of seatpost" or standover the bike(with the riding shoes) and lift it up. If you got an inch-2inches from the ground on each wheel it fits.

This is also why you might see many vintage frames in larger sizes, they sized them taller back then, and since the stems were mostly one height(no nitto technomics) you wanted enough stack to run the stem up, or slammed.

Modern bikes always look weird to me.

I never stopped riding but once I got a nicer all-road/gravel type bike it put me on the path of revamping and maturing my whole approach and now I don't even go for a test ride around the block without my helmet on. I see parents with little kids out on our greenbelt trails with no helmets and it's genuinely upsetting to see how irresponsible they're being with their children. Except there are literally no studies conclusively showing that bicycle helmets actually reduce the chance of injury or death, per hour ridden or per mile.
Go ahead, look it up and try to prove me wrong.
The testing regime for bicycle helmets has nothing to do with real world crashes.
In short, society just agreed at some point that when you're cycling you need to wear a helmet, but when you're a pedestrian, or driving a car, or climbing a ladder, or playing soccer, you don't.
This view is based on literally nothing. No studies show that cycling is actually more dangerous than any of those other activities.
It's all based on vibe and feels.

So yeah, wear a helmet if it makes you feel better. But be aware that it is then inconsistent not to wear a helmet at all times.

I'm actually not convinced either way.
If it's so fucking obvious that bicycle helmets reduce the number of injuries and deaths compared to riding without one in real world conditions, surely there must be plenty of studies proving this?

Stupid anon, helmets protect your head from injury. That's why you should wear a helmet everywhere you go and whatever you do.
Just in case, cause it's safer!

No, it's the core of the matter: Why wear a helmet on a bicycle but not during other activities, when there's no data showing that riding a bicycle is more dangerous?
Anonymous No.2042382 [Report] >>2042383

because falling at 15mph and hitting your head is dangerous? but you knew this already. why don't you go gather some datapoints

and we're back to the argument "it just is".

Which is exactly my point. There's no actual data to support it.

what "studies" are you looking for exactly? you want studies that look at all bicycle crashes and see how many people ended up with massive head injuries vs. those who didnt?

I think riding without a helmet is safer in a way, since during a bad crash you'll likely just die instead of ending up a useless cripple that can't even rope, doesn't really matter if you live in a country with euthanasia though

I do almost all my riding on a safe rail to trail route. Wearing a helmet is just a pain in the neck for basically no value add.

I also hate clipless pedals, and I feel like it's for the same reason.

Forced bike helmets as public policy is on the same level as "bible-based abstinence education" instead of teaching kids the birds and the bees, it sounds great if you have no fucking clue about how the world works, and it outs you as a superstitious clown to sane people.

I still wear a helmet because I'm a lycra fred who likes bombing down hills in the biggest ring and the smallest cog, but the average cyclist should not be in a helmet, and promoting helmets for the average cyclist makes you a useful idiot or a shill of the auto industry, same with the bike lane morons

ive been riding since i was 10 or so, nearly my entire familiy would go on bike rides at least a few times a year, and i could probably count with my fingers the amount of times i wore one
What's the point of wearing a helmet if i dont plan on crashing? i use mountain bikes and barely ever surpass 20kph anyway, im not a road racer that wants to spend 3 hours a day bothering tired car drivers? when both me and the car drivers will enjoy ourselves more if we go to routes where we dont have to cope with each other

I have been cycling since I was maybe five or six years old and the only time I wore a helmet was visiting Melbourne, Australia where apprently they have some stupid law.

Fallen off lot. Never hit my head. I am convinced if I wore one it would be more dangerous as I would not be able to picture the size, speed and road position from the sound alone, something I can do quite well by paying attention.

Head-cagies will never be able to do this and probably have lots of crashes as a result.
