standard cabs were the peak of american railroading and i never got to see it :(

Standard cabs sucked and I do not miss them. Also, most of those ICs have been repainted to the CN colors. That's the real shame.
Anonymous No.2033603 [Report] >>2033604
Also, in a SUPER pedantic note. GEVO is the name of the actual prime mover in them. The locomotive is an Evolution Series or EVO.

nobody calls them EVOs though lol
Anonymous No.2033605 [Report] >>2039687

People that build them and work on them do. GEVO is even a poor descriptor because there actually is a surprising amount of variation in prime movers across the line.

what's a standard cab
Anonymous No.2034443 [Report]
>>2033701
Old style cab where the door and steps are on the side. Wide cab is bigger and the door is on the front.

A few weeks ago I was jerking it to a live cam girl who was incredibly young looking so I checked her age out of curiosity, January 2007. I had to jerk the guilt off

They all look the exact same. I doubt you could tell me the difference between a tier 2 EVO and Dash-9.
Anonymous No.2037012 [Report] >>2037067 >>2039670
>>2037006
Longer electrical cabinet on fireman's side as well as the inverter bank/air filters behind the cab on top of the hood extending ~1 ft longer than the dash 9 and the radiator has a pronounced trapezoidal bump vs the all flat style on dash 9 and the exhaust stack is a tad bit different, but not much. Probably some more stuff but this is from working memory. That said, I only get excited for EMD powered locals anymore.

They look more difficult to enter & exit than modern ones. The nose door is reminiscent of E & F units, you'd have to crouch down to get through it, but the doors on modern units aren't a big deal

I called them what the railroad stenciled on the side, ES44AC or DC

>>2039670
Bigger 'box' behind the conductor's side of the cab on the AC4400s. On Dash 9s it's just a cab air conditioner. Idk about what else
Anonymous No.2039690 [Report]
>>2039687
I just say DC/AC evo, tier 4, and add in the C4 if it's one of those silly BNSF ones.

I do just call the AC4400 mods by the engine inside of them to seperate them from the original ones.

Wide cab toilets are basically your average porta-potty. Old ones on standard cabs are pretty awful.

They have a tank that can be emptied track side, just like the new ones, but it's in a dark cramped area and they're worse made.

*Some of them do not have this and you empty them once they're full by sucking it out with a vacuum like in a porta potty. It's rarely done and leads to overflowing toilets.

They could have been but it looks like that pic was taken in 78, after the oil crises earlier in the decade spiked the price of fuel, so some were probably isolated.

Sidenote I didn't know one was restored to operating condition a few years ago

In the steam locomotive days crewmen would climb in the coal pile and shit there then shovel it into the firebox

Eh. There's several hundred operating rail museums in the country if you want to go see something different. There are also the short lines like the E&LS that run older restored equipment if you want to see something really different.
Anonymous No.2040391 [Report] >>2040392
>>2040390
TVRM also leases out older operational locomotives to yards around Chattanooga. So you can basically see literal museum pieces in revenue service.
Anonymous No.2040392 [Report] >>2040394
>>2040391
The most extreme example I can think of is Strasburg in Pennsylvania. They've basically been a steam heritage railway since the late 1960s, but around 2010 local businesses contacted them about running revenue freight. After studying it, the board agreed, a couple see of older bridges were replaced with modern concrete viaduct and Strasburg started running revenue in 2013. Which means if it's an excursion day and the steam locomotives are steamed up, they make an early morning trip out to exchange cars from the NS interchange and you can see 100 year old steam hauling modern 100 ton frieght cars in revenue service.
Anonymous No.2040394 [Report]
>>2040392
Forgot to mention, they usually take a coach and caboose with them if they're not expecting too many cars. If you make there early enough, you can pay the conductor directly, cash only, and ride the revenue run.

I wish I understood freight train autism, especially the US kind. American freight locomotives all look the same. The only cool ones were the F-units and basically anything that wasn't a boring metal box.

The same thing can happen with anything if you have the 'tism. My personal demon for awhile was the Chance-Vought Corsair and all of its variations. I can occasionally pick out details of modern six axle freight locomotives, but broadly speaking, I'm limited to whether it's a GE or EMD product. I kind of like looking for weird Frankenstein shop creations, like this thing. It's an ALCO RS3 whose prime mover died. So they swapped in an EMD prime mover along with the GP long hood.

I've gotten in the habit of going by the tracks for a little while after work. After awhile, the trains often feel the same with similar or identical locomotives. I mostly enjoy seeing mixed manifests, interesting locomotives or fallen flags on railcars. Getting there at around the same time everyday means you often see the same trains.
