It's going to be built on an existing railway line so to all intensive purposes it'll be heavy rail except maybe they'll use LRT-type vehicles if demand is low.

I forgot this is america where a mass transit station counts as "the airport stop" as long as it's within a 45 minute taxi ride from an airport terminal, meanwhile in other countries you roll your carry-on bags off the plane and out the security checkpoint and there's the train to the central business district. cue the low IQ boomer here who screams at me for being a godless america-hating terrorist any time I suggest things could be in any way better whatsoever (yes baconrider I know it's you)

I expect half the stops to be removed. This might be a case where they make it look like it serves a lot of people to get politicians greenlight it.

I live in Queens, there are quite a few people who do commute every day to south Brooklyn and getting there by mass transit is a pain in the ass, driving is even worse because every highway that goes from Queens to Brooklyn is horrific.

I think the MTA is half-assing the project, but I'll take what I can get.

>>2039607
I don't understand why they're still going with light rail, especially since they announced that they're going to tunnel under the cemetery to avoid street-running in Middle Village. You'd think it would be easier logistically if they could draw from the same pools of train cars that the rest of the subway uses. Buying a new fleet of light rail cars means people have to be trained on how to drive and maintain them, and if some are taken out of service they can't just pull cars from other parts of the system to make up for it like how they put R46s back on the G recently.

Sounds like a great deal for Alstrom and the bureaucrats getting kickbacks from them. Only people getting fucked by that would be taxpayers.
Definitely sounds like NYC.

They need to upzone the areas around this if they want to keep it funded and have decent ridership. A lot of these place are low-density and are ripe for new housing. Could also use some streetscaping to be more pedestrian-friendly but it's not urgent.

probably to make it sound like no big deal so when it inevitably gets axed because of some political issue the supporters can frame it as a very light and low-impact ask that the recalcitrant outerborough chuds hated because they are stupid and don't know what's in their interests

Since it's an active freight line the cars need to be FRA compatible so they can't use normal subway cars. They could use the Staten Island Railway cars though.

No there aren't. No one's commuting to Dyker Heights from Queens. If there's like 6 people who do, they can take the R.

All the time. What is your point? Whether I take the bus or not, there is no justification for light rail or a subway line connecting Jackson Heights to Dyker Heights through East New York. People in Dyker Heights don't go to Jackson Heights. People in Jackson Heights don't go to Dyker Heights. No one goes to East New York unless you are so unfortunate as to have to live there.

Most of the ROW is a working freight line and part of it has a pipeline that carries jet fuel to JFK and was the target of a half assed terrorist plot years ago. Thereโ€™s room for another track as it was double tracked back in the day when they were hauling lots of freight from the carfloat barge yards in Bay Ridge roundabout to the Hell Gate bridge as a way to bypass bridges over the Hudson. Most of the line is below grade so building a passenger line wouldnโ€™t interfere much with the neighborhoods but I just donโ€™t see it happening given the state of the MTA.

NTA but, FRA can be waived for conventional/light rail sharing trackage if temporal separation can be demonstrated. For sharing right of way, but not trackage, intrusion fence/crash wall can be constructed instead.

I can't see how 5-car A Division sets wouldn't be a good fit. The MTA is about to order R262 subway cars.

Because those are always initially pitched as less expensive than conventional metro systems using the logic of light = cheap, heavy = expensive.I seriously believe in the minds of bureaucrats (generally ignorant of most issues they vote on), that is how the decision is made. In practice I'm not certain how much more expensive heavy rail would be, if it is at all, after you factor in all the graft, waste, and corruption that goes with big government public works projects.
