I get this zzzzzzzz sound while pedaling hard-ish coming from below me, its kind of a rear hub buzz, but it happens lets say when my pedal is in the up position (not constantly, but a during a period during each rotation of crank)
I am thinking its bottom bracket cus the noise seems to match the cadance and not wheel speed, but the noise isnt exactly a creak like I have seen online
its not the rear derailleur
could it be the chain? or maybe pedals?
>>2043594Are your tyres inflated? It may be your tyres are flat. Check
DIY ideas to whack in a 1 1/8 crown race?
I'm getting a bike as a gift for a relative and from what I understand, price range is really important to take into consideration.
I can get a Trek FX 1 for $600 or a Trek Marlin 5 Gen 3 for $800.
Would the Marlin be worth the extra $200? It's for someone in their 60s, so they'll probably just use it for leisure.
>>2043594tighten the chainring bolts perhaps? i had that once, replaced the pedals and only then noticed that i was missing a bolt.
>>2043606a bit uncalled for
>>2043763those are completely different bikes, if he's in his 60s he's probably not riding mtb trails so i'd get the cheaper hybrid.
>>2043766>those are completely different bikes, if he's in his 60s he's probably not riding mtb trails so i'd get the cheaper hybridMakes sense, thanks anon.

why do all the bike themed youtube channels look like absolute faggots
we need a bqg โcord im tired of browsing dead board where the only threads that get action are retarded ragebait and equally retarded ebike shit
>>2043829Agreed but I would just hope it would be joined by people who ride more than they post here because literally 80% of the bike related posts on /n/ are fucking retarded
I worry it would just be a discord full of fat retards who ride once every two weeks and argue about bikes the rest of the time
>>2043610yeah I put a peice of wood against the crown race and hammered the other end of the wood. you have to go around the crown race so it goes in evenly i.e not just hit one end until its all the way in before hitting the other end.
>>2043829>I'm a control freak wannabe janny>generals aren't enough for me to push my control freak agenda>everyone pls join my discord so I can ban u like a real jannyYou need to go outside and get some fresh air and maybe find a hobby
>>2043841I donโt even want to janny, as I neither created said cord or volunteered to mod it, I would just like a space where I can talk about bikes, ask questions, and last but not least of all, call retarded projecting fat frogposters retarded, which I canโt do on sites like Reddit, where you should go back to.
>>2043833I donโt know how to avoid this issue but it canโt be worse than what we have now, place looks like an average boeing landing zone.
>>2043857>I just want to control everything, reddit wasn't good enough it needs to be discordmaybe you should leave
>>2043859Alright nevermind you single handedly changed my mind, dont want a server anymore if 3IQ synthetic baby food victims like you will be spamming dank pepe memes there all day. Just reading your โno uโ post made me roll my eyes so hard it hurt. Congrats. You and your single braincell won

Never tried cable dicks.
What's so shit about them specifically? Cause they must suck really bad if /n/ thinks rims are better. If we're being honest, rims suck ass.
Are there good cable dicks?
>>2043909clamping 70mm from the center of the axle requires a lot more power to do anything, and this absolutely kills any chance at decent modulation if you're using a braided steel cable, also the pads don't self adjust and you can never upgrade them
no there are not good cable dicks. there are expensive ones where contrarian trolls can say they spent more than the cost of an entire bike to have slightly worse braking than a tiagra brake and 99% of people have never even seen them so the appeal to personal experience wins the internet argument but for practical purposes you should just turn 360 degrees and walk away
what is this and where do i buy another?
>>2043590 (OP)I have a crazy, possibly stupid question.
For the FAST powered bikes that go more then 30 mph and up to 55+ mph.
I assume we would wear protection, like jacket/vest, and pants.
But should you protect your family jewels?
The chances of that getting hit or hurt is like 1% right?
But if you crashed into ground, with your junk hitting the ground,
I imagine it would be like hitting a melon with a hammer.
Is there a point in protecting for the 1% chance of getting your junk destroyed?
Do you only need it if you have Big junk?
>>2043915Cable disc brakes
>>2043918It would help if you said where you got that part from.
>>2043920Is this some weird fetish thing? Bro no one stops you from riding with a cup. I bet it will take approximately 15 seconds for you to realize why that's a redacted idea.
>>2043594Do you have a front derailleur? That can rub on the chain and make that sound if it is out of tune.
>>2043913Thanks, you sound knowledgable and reasonable.
So hydro dicks...
What's the deal with those? Especially when it comes to maintaining and fixing them.
Is it like a Rohloff, where I can expect them to just werk for as long as I live, but when there's a defect on tour I'm just fucked?
Or do you have to do some messy, precise, complicated shit using expensive tools once a year to maintain them?
Can I expect to connect and set them up myself in my driveway, after changing bars for example, or is that a factory job?
Sorry for being retarded, my bike wrenching skills are about 30 years out of date.
>>2043918thats a spiral flanged cone sleeve look on amazon or something bro
>>2043918looks like the short piece of cable housing that connects to the rear derailleur?
you buy housing for the entire span of the shifter to the rear derailleur and you cut it to fit however it's routed along your frame. with the leftover housing you cut a piece the same size for that, I've never seen small pieces sold separately.
you can buy a whole kit and it'll have cable, housing, ferrules to cap the housing ends, and little crimpers for the end of the cable all for a good price from Jagwire and others.
>>2043931not him but this sounds likely
>>2043958are you telling me this little thing may have been home-made?
>>2043920>It would help if you said where you got that part from.i found it in a spare parts bin. i use for front brakes on my bmx at the aggressive bend coming out the bottom of the steer tube
>>2043940google query says its not a spiral flanged cone sleeve
>>2043906gotchu bro, even got some cat ears for the full experience, itโll be a proper /n/ meetup. nothing will go wrong
>>2043920Please do not wear a cup while riding a bicycle.
>>2043913I have Tektro hydraulic disc, will I die going downhill?
>>2043937hydro dicks basically never fail unless you crash, I've never used a rolloff but from what I gather they are insanely complex machines. a hydro dick is not terribly complex once you've mentally accepted that they are not "dick brakes but with fluid", but instead a fairly different concept:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPptmoy0u3s
if you don't crash you'll burn through at least half a dozen sets of pads and a couple of rotors before you even need to start thinking about a bleed (I'm talking about normal mineral oil brakes not the DOT shit which is for masochists)
pad replace is easy, just a multitool, a needle nose pliers, a pad spreader, and new pads. and obviously isopropyl and whatever else you need to stay clean
>>2044006>*that they are not "cable brakes but with fluid"
>>2043998I mean, it's just a length of housing that was cut to that size (presumably) because it covered the bend in the cable as it joined the rear derailleur. all rear derailleurs have it unless they're the new wireless ones with a motor.
I wouldn't call it home-made, all housing gets sized to the bike, there's no standard lengths.
yours is bare metal coil but originally it was covered in colored plastic
>>2044050>>2043998if you use it for brake cable then it may be brake housing (the cables are different circumference than shift cable) but I've never seen any brake cable cut that short. the fittings on either end are not familiar to me.
I just assumed it was for the pic I posted because of the short length.
if you're lucky you can just ask a shop for an off cut so you don't have to buy a whole length and you can transfer those endings over if you want
>>2043795Nearly all youtube channels across all interests, genres and themes look like absolute faggots.
Just bought a pack of silca wax and a new small pot to melt it in.
How do i wax my chain bros? Ist the cleaning beforehand really that important?
>>2044100Yes, the cleaning is very important.
And also a pain in the ass, which is why waxed chains are a meme. Unless you're rich and can just buy pre-waxed chains.
>>2043590 (OP)BIG question- With the most modern metallurgy, a carbon fork, carbon rims/cranks/etc,. rim-brake parts, and so on, could someone make a steel TDF-weight bike, with narrower tubing (more aero)?
Could someone machine their own knockoff of a Shimano component (smaller cluster on the back, slightly reduced # of gears, making Over Locknut Diameter narrower, reducing weight and aero drag, and a less-dished wheel?) Would that loss be worth it by generating a less-dished wheel?
Seems the frame itself and the rear cluster changes would be improvements, on the right stages. I know Shimano has to sell a 14 speed to get boomers with enlarged prostates excited, but might it be the case that we've gone overboard, past the point of diminishing returns?
What's the real advantage of being in exactly the right gear with 14 gears in the back with a tooth per shift? Why not just pedal a little tiny bit harder to hit the right speed and cadence?
>>2044114TDF weight, narrower:
Yes, easily. Especially since TDF mandates a minimum weight and many teams have to artificially add weight to bikes already, also the 3:1 rule (or whatever new rule rwplaced it).
It's easy to machine your own components. Not sure what exactly you're suggesting but people mix and match or make narrower clusters all the time. They specifically do this to for example fit more tighter spaced gears on older freehubs, for example. Not even machining involved up to here. It's also a very common thing to reduce OLD or replace axles to achieve any desired OLD. In fact many hubs you buy have the same stuff inside as if they were made for the next number of speeds up or down just plus or minus additional spacers. Now if what you're sayin you want say 13 gears in a 9 spd package, it sure can be done, id first check if reducing spacers alone gets, ou there, only after id check if cogs themselves would need shaving too. But the can of worms youre opening here would be: Narrower chain, definately needs indexed shifting so make the plate too etc.
Things like that are being done, have always being done but you always need to keep in mind: Teams of engineers at any of the big S work with big budgets and big sample sizes to determine realistic limits and then corresponding products. An idea you drew up with in a meth induced frenzy might seem not as promising anymore by the time you soin up the lathe and ultimately leave you asking: Why even?
>What's the real advantage of being in exactly the right gearWhy does everyone and their mom cobble together corn cob style casettes for their TT bikes?
>>2043918Looks like a flexible V-brake noodle.
>>2044106>its a pain in the ass so its literally impossible therefore its a memeare you a woman? telling me you canโt dunk a bike chain in some solvent? sounds so so difficult who would ever do that
>unless you are rich and can buy pre waxed chainsI just bought one and it cost the same as a chain + some wax, free labour
Can someone recommend me a solid book for proper bike fitting?
I did a century last weekend and my entire body hurts due to being uncomfortable on the bike.
I know nothing about biking. Is it retarded to buy a used mountain bike off marketplace? There's a local ski resort that does free downhill group rides on Wednesdays and I want to start doing that. It feels retarded to cheap out on a bike that will put my safety in jeopardy but also I'm a jew when it comes to spending. I want to bomb hills and hit jumps
>>2044164first one is rigid so you cant do downhill
2nd one will kill you
3rd is an ok entry level hardtail with a 100mm fork, gonna be nice to do some easy trails with but its not a downhill bike
>>20441643rd one is best by A LOT
but if u know nothing about biking and want to hit jumps you gonna die lol
>>2044170okay baby steps at first. I'll get comfortable with downhill before I send it off a jump
Do I really need to spend 1k on a fucking bike?
>>2044164The third is the only "real" mtb. But still completely lack luster for serious downhill. You can buy it but you'll be getting rid of it very quickly if you end up getting into the sport.
>>2044172Maybe try borrowing a bike first? $1k on a new bike is the bare minimum for MTB. It sucks but they're just expensive. You can get lucky used, but you're still gonna have to cough up more that $700 for a bike capable of smashing downhill.
Id encourage you to buy the cheap rock hopper, nothing wrong with it if you just wanna touch easier trails. Infact for $350 it's perfect. When you're done sell it for like $150 and buy a real bike, or decide the sport isn't for you. Id encourage you to get some real spiked pedals as those plastic ones will have your feet slip.
>>2044172like the other anon said you should borrow a bike before buying
you said the group rides are at a resort right? they most likely have bikes you can rent
>>2044175>>2044174>>2044168thank you I appreciate the responses. I'll see if they do rentals that's a good idea
>>2044106IMO it depends on context.
A waxed chain makes perfect sense for your race day bike or if you're a LARPing Fred and only ride when its nice out, maybe 200 km a week and are a gay ass motorist otherwise.
On your daily? Forget it. You'll constantly find yourself waxing or find it's just gone to shit after any longer trip where you didn't return to base daily.
Waxing is simply incompatible wkth mileage and adverse weather.
I need some light rain gear, can anyone recommend a lightweight poncho or rain cape type deal. Just something I can put on in light rain and stuff in a pannier otherwise.
>>2044208https://www.amazon.ca/Frogg-Toggs-Action-Poncho-Blue/dp/B07KWRXSZR?th=1&psc=1
Like this? Or are the ponchos retarded
>>2044209Yeah, this. That's what all the ultralight hikers wear for raingear, and a poncho is easier to don, lighter and more breathable than a jacket and rain pants.
Is it retarded? No. If it was, I'd know.
My rain gear is a wool coat in winter and "deal with it" plus a spare set of clothes at the office in summer.
>>2044215Cool I'll get one then, thanks
>2044100
if it's a bike you daily you have to wax it a lot more often than oil. like anon says if this is your garage queen race day bike then you won't notice it.
you have to clean the chain before lube either way but the cleaning job is the most time consuming, and waxing is more time consuming than dripping oil on each link, so bottom line is you spend a lot more time servicing the chain with wax, both because more often and takes longer.
if you have an expensive 12 speed chain, wax can make it last longer but if you have a 12 speed bike you're probably loaded anyway so buying a new one isn't an issue.
chains are a wear item and e.g. 8 speed and below are super cheap. so ask yourself: would you rather service it quickly and infrequently and spend less than an hour's wage replacing it sometimes, or would you rather spend 3x the time servicing it to prolong the chain's life to save a little money on something that ultimately gets replaced more frequently than anything else on the bike.
you could just say fuck it and never clean it and just buy new ones but the grit on a dirty chain wears out your gears which actually are expensive. so cleaning the chain actually is important even if the chain is cheap
Is it true that you shouldn't use the highest gear because it's made of cheaper material
>>2044218greentext quoting is cringe.
no I'm not gonna look up if it's me you meant.
This (You) is on the house.
>>2044219If you're not going to use top gear to save money on wear parts, just get a groupset with one less gear. They're even cheaper.
>>2044221I want to use it so I can go faster but I don't wanna wreck my bike
lot of people don't seem to have waxing experience
since I switched to wax I spend way less time fucking around with my drivetrain, everything just werx. my bike storage area is also clean and dry and I no longer expose myself to forever chemicals, there's literally no downside ot this
the "trick" (I thought this was pretty well documented) is you start with two clean new chains and you strip those. obviously, the rest of your drivetrain should be reasonably clean too. best to do this when replacing cassette/chainring but it's not critical
you strip, you wax, you hang to dry (I wipe down after the dip, but officially I think that's supposedly bad)
you then mount a chain and expect it to be a little fussy for the first 10 miles. the next 200-300 miles (depending on conditions) are stress-free, and clean as a whistle. when it's time, you unlink the master link, throw the second one on, and you then either pour boiling water over the old one and put in the hot wax again, or you do them both on the same day when they're both ready, it's up to you
if you just love getting filth and grease everywhere, all over your hands, your drivetrain, your hallway where you keep the bike, then by all means keep dribbling oil everywhere and spreading filth but I am never going back to liquid lubes, ever, ever, ever, FUCK that shit. being able to just grab the chain and run my hands all over it at any time and my hands are spotless is a great feeling and the old way is barbarism
>>2044146sorry, I don't know of any but I'm sure there are several.
bring allen wrenches with you on those long rides and pull over frequently and try different stuff. on your first of any given adjustment, try to go stupidly far so it feels wrong the other way and then you know it's between the old place and there. if you do it stupidly far and it doesn't feel wrong, keep going if you can. but if you go in tiny increments first, it'll take forever to find the initial limit or it'll feel slightly better so you stop without realizing farther is even better.
this is what worked for me . but one adjustment can frequently affect the others so trial and error does work but yeah it took a long time.
getting the stem reach right is frustrating because you can't adjust it by turning a bolt, they have to be removed and replaced. a cheap adjustable stem is how I started but you're still working within its set limits. but very easy to initially get it in the ballpark before picking a fixed stem.
KOPS isn't perfect but it does give you a reasonable place to start. the cockpit adjustments take even longer ime because there's so many more variables.
>>20441643rd but if the frame isn't your size then don't buy it
>>2044172bombing hills and hitting jumps is actually the use case where spending over $1k is not a meme and is actually necessary (unless you're a huge bike nerd that can buy good used deals and wrench them into top shape, and even then, you still might have to spend near or over that)
you're lucky to live near a place that you can do it so frequently but you need the best bikes to do it. There are supposed to be different paths for different skill levels so a lesser bike might be ok for beginner trails but for what you really want to end up doing you need an expensive bike
>>2044209>ponchosthere's a big difference between ponchos and raincapes. they're both open at the bottom but raincapes are cut to fit over the whole bike and stay in place. ponchos can't deal with the constant wind of a bike in motion. you can't grab it to keep it in place because your hands are on the bar, not like when you're walking.
but they make raincapes in goretex-type lightweight material, but they're a niche item within the niche item of raincapes
>>2044232Yeah I am not sure if the poncho is gonna be annoying in the wind. But I don't really want to commit to a full cape that goes over the bike either.
>>2044220oh, I didn't mean to do that.
>>2044218was supposed to be for
>>2044100.
whoops.
>>2044233you kind of need full fenders for the poncho or cape because the wheels kick road spray under the cape.
but fenders are awesome and having rain gear open at the bottom is the way to go ime.
normal rain jackets and pants work for walking. but on a bike they block the flowing air which is the main way your body cools while doing aerobic exercise (ie biking) so you literally get drenched in sweat, which is way more disgusting than clean rainwater.
>ponchos
How would you not toast in seconds?
Even when it's below freezing or close to zero and snowing// raining and I'm out in a T-shirt it only takes a few km and I only regret not bringing gloves because fingers fucking freeze while my entire core is warm and toasty. Cant tell if it's more sweat or percipitation by the time I get to work.
>>2044186Good luck dude, hope you have health insurance
>>2044222You're not gonna wreck your bike, whoever told you that is an idiot.
Yes, on some cassettes there are steel cogs and aluminum cogs, or on very very expensive ones some cogs might be titanium.
For normal riding (so any type that isn't pro racing), an entire cassette costs $20 and will last you thousands of miles no matter how you use it.
>>2044236I'm in the PNW so anybody without fenders here is a fake & gay fair weather rider. Tbh I think every bike except roadie racing bikes should have fenders, it always blows my mind when I see touring/bikepacking bikes without even a small MTB fender, like why.
The poncho was only $30 so I'll give it a try before I think about getting a full rain cape. I have heavier winter rain gear, I just need something for light spring/fall rains.
V brakes or cantilevers for a retro bike restoration/upgrade?
are short cranks a fad? I have a hard time believing it took this long for people to suddenly realize they are better
>>2044100You can just put the whole bag in a pot of water. Yes it definitely needs to be cleaned, a jar with kerosene will work.
Are there any manufacturers that still make alu/steel road bikes with rim brakes and allow me to use 32mm tires? I looked a bit around and the Trek Domane AR 2 almost fits the bill, but it only has a max tire clearance of 28mm. I would be actually happy with a Sora/Claris set or even microshift. I do enjoy going fast for fun but I am not competetive and not a group rider, I just like the feel of a road bike but also willing to go wider tires for more comfort, flat pedals and ignore carbon frames.
>>2044305If you're buying new why not just go hydro disk.
Also try bikesdirect.com I think they're a weird as website and their bikes aren't worth the price but if you have such a niche need they might have it .
Otherwise I think no one is making mid tier rim brake bikes new anymore. production is high end, no one's offering Claris rim brake shi Id highly recommend shopping used, I got a aluminum frame carbon fork Specialized Allez with full Ultegra for $600. The market is getting flooded with these beautiful 2010-ish road bikes that people are giving up on in favor of the "latest and greatest".
It only fits 28mm but the limiting factor is the brakes. I think that's somewhat typical for more modern road bikes. You need to buy tektros long arm calipers, they give more clearance.
In any cases, your needs are niche so good luck bud.
>>2044285Depends on the bars and overall aesthetics. But if I was running flat bars you couldn't pay me to put cantilevers on over v brakes, fuck that shit. If I had drop bars it's another story
>>2044305>rim brakeskill yourself
>>2044305Basically, no. 32mm became a thing only after run brakes were gone. Now you're looking at boutique "do it all" framesets like Cinelli Tutto or Surly Crosscheck and either build it up yourself or have a bike shop do it for you.
Either way, you'll get a lighter, more modern and much cheaper bike if you drop one of your requirements.
>>2044316or ride down a hill in the rain, same thing.
>>2044223this desu. I donโt know why the fuck there are still people shitting on wax, i refuse to believe they have tried it. you have to be some special kind of fucking retard to think wax is somehow more effort, then again its /n/
>>2044223>the next 200-300 miles (depending on conditions) are stress-free, and clean as a whistle. when it's time, you unlink the master link, throw the second one on, and you then either pour boiling water over the old one and put in the hot wax again, nigga I ride 200 miles a week. Or on a weekend tour. I'm not gonna give my chain a hot bath and a back rub every weekend.
I take a new chain out of its box, put it on and go. Wipe it down with an oily rag when it starts to make noises, and ride it till it breaks.
By that time I've already bought 3 more bikes so I just leave the broken one unlocked in a diverse area.
>>2044326>>2044307Aight thanks, I think I will look for one with 28mm clearance to widen my options.
>>2044305most rims nowadays, including aluminium ones, are 17mm or wider. So better suited for 32s than 23s IMO. Plemty of frames and brakes to choose from. Complete bikes too just perhaps not from the big brands you're looking at but literally everyone else.
>>2044309Why are they considered bad? Too finnicky to adjust?
>>2044335>I ride 200 miles a weekwhoa, can I have your autograph?
>I'm too incompetent to use a quick link once a weekskill issue
>I'm dutchoh, well that makes sense, but why are you buying new chains you fucking fred
Are bike cleaning products a meme and just another ripoff by the bike industry? I am using dish soap and water mixed in a spray bottle and sometimes I second guess myself. Am I ruining my bike (aluminum frame)?

i have been riding this thing literally everyday to work and back, and whenever i have free time and its a fucking blast. i love it. riding bikes kicks ass. i havent had the repairs done yet but i did buy some chain cleaner and lube for some easy maintenance. my question is, was it worth spending money on this ancient bike, and 2, should i bother getting drop bars or bullhorn/pursuit bars? will my experience improve dramatically over the regular handlebars i have now?
>>2044386There's so much wrong with this fucker but according to what you ahared you got her fixed up right? The obvious signs of rust in some places suck, it just says winter beater or outdoor storage with the associated wear and tear.
Regarsing your bars: You'll njoy a fixed gear bike the most with flat bars. Sure get track drops and be faster, look cooler bjt you'll also notice that you'll stop alot of the tomfoolery you'd do otherwise.
You do have griptape, rriiightt? Also foot retention right? Cycling in general but fixed gear in particular makea no sense without foot retention and if you ever slip of your pedals going down hill youll look like a silly goose.
The bike shop probably meant the headset wasn't adjusted right.
It wasn't worth 150$ but what you wrote implies it was definately worth 150$ TO YOU and that is wht matters. Congrats on the new bike. Enjoy her.
>>2044388yeah, its a commuter bike for me and its gonna be living outside (under an awning and a bike cover) so the idea of it being kinda beat up is ideal. are you able to elaborate on what is wrong beyond the wear and tear?
the bike shop only works on road bikes and they have a really good rep in my city, so i trust them when they said they need to do some work, but i'd be nice to know if i should look out for anything else. my japanese isnt great but the clerk was saying something about the headset feeling "loose" if i remember correctly. i also insisted that he order a white tire so they'd match, and he asked what size... i said, just match the back tire? i dunno i dont knwo SHIT about bikes man
>tapewrapped the bars, yeah
>strapsi see lots of fixie folks talk about foot retention but it seems super inconvenient. my riding areas are mostly flat and the idea of being strapped into my pedals is a bit scary. how necessary are we talking here? can you make a recommendation? simpler the better
>>2044386Iโd pay maaaaybe 50 bucks for that in the condition it was in. Yeah you got a little scammed. But like
>>2044388 said as long as you went and got that tuneup you should be fine. I was you Iโd focus on buying things that better the three Points of Contact on your rig:
pedals so you have better grip, good ones are available for around 20-40 USD
grips for the bars so your hands dont hurt, good ones are available for 30-50 USD
saddle, price may vary on this one but you still shouldnโt need to pay anything over 100
Get yourself a nice pair of bike shorts, a water bottle, and you should be good to go.
Oh and a bike fit, extremely important, just have a mechanic eyeball ya and see if you need the saddle lowered or moved or w/e
welcome to the hobby, enjoy staring at other bikersโ asses, dont spend a bunch until a year from now when youโre ready to buy something new. till then, ride this bike into the ground
>>2044390straps and clips not needed just get normal pedals with metal studs, so they dont wear down to nubs like plastic do
>>2044390straps/clips are absolutely moronic, either get pinned flats or get actual foot retention, straps and clips are the worst option, they won't hold your foot on unless they're on so tight you can't get out, there is a reason only eroica larpers and clueless teens on gaspipe fixies use them
>>2044391bike fitting has been a work in progress but everytime i make an adjustment it feels a lot better. first was the seat (measured inseam and used a calculator) then the handlebars (pretty much all the way down) and is now very very comfortable despite the saddle being kind of stiff compared to the big squishy seats i rode when i was a kid
>>2044392the current pedals are steel and pointy, and (with the exception of riding down a big hill and losing track of the pedals) straps or clips seem super tedious and inconvenient- maybe even a little dangerous. like turning a skateboard into a snowboard. (though im happy to be mistaken)
what do i do at stoplights? im not a roadbike nut who rides marathons, just a regular guy who thinks fixie bikes are neat and rides to work and to the supermarket and back. 99% of my riding will be in town. i wear normal shoes and normal clothes. do i really need foot retention? and is there a way to make it work for an everyday commute/supermarket bike?
>>2043590 (OP)W2C this look?
>>2044394Easy rule: If you ride fixed gear, you need foot retention. It's not less safe, but safer.
If learning to get in and out of straps or wearing special shoes is too involved for you, don't ride fixed. Simple as.
>>2044397>If you ride fixed gear, you need foot retentionhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0mE2b5zu48
this guy doesnt
>>2044398OK then copy what he does, seems very reasonable.
>>2044394Well I can only repeat myself but apparently it is my and my personal opinion only:
All bicycle riding without foot retention is ass. Get any system you like.
>What do at stops? It depends on your system:
You can always pull up next to a car, lamp post or whatevs and hold onto it. If that is not an option:
Toeclips or hipster-straps: Pull foot back to the rear.
Toeclips with the appropiate cleat: Plan ahead, reach down, loosen strap, then as above.
Modern clipless systems, like SPD, SPD-SL, XC, speedplay... flick your heel out, pedal goes 'click' and you're out.
Setting off:
With toeclips, straps etc, you need to flip the pedal right side up with the tip of your foot and then slide it forward.
Modern clipless systems: Just press down really, pedal goes 'click' and youre in.
Now: All this sounds super complicated and conscious. Its not. You do it 2 or three times and it will be instinctively, you wont notice. You even do it instinctively when you crash. You'll find when you roll up to a light you already got your foot out, youll find when you pull away youre in before you think about it.
A thing about clips and straps: You can ride those upside down for a short stretch or on one side, depending on why and how you feel, might drag in a corner, at that point you want to get in proper anyways.
There is also clipless pedals that are flat on one side or adapters, you can run those loose too.
But
>>2044392>>2044393seem to be fine riding on flats only. For fixed gear IMO that is *moronic*.
Back in the day I only rode toeclips or straps because 'I want to wear the shoes I want to wear and not wht my bike mandates', now almost all my bike have XC pedals and I wear those shoes habitually anyways. They luckily work just as well with clips and or or straps.
>>2044397can you explain why?
i feel like the entire appeal of a fixed gear bike is simplicity. easy to maintain, easy to ride. just pedal and go. if i want to modulate my speed i can use my legs OR my brakes OR both. losing my pedals when going downhill seems like a bike control issue but i don't see why i cant just slow down with my brakes to regain composure. also, today i went over some bumps and instinctively stopped pedaling and almost ate shit but was luckily able to just lift up my feet to prevent the crash. i feel like being strapped in would have made it significantly worse
>>2044400i understand what you are saying but do you have any reasoning behind it i could try to understand?
i wear skateboard shoes because i don't own anything else. i often ride to the skatepark and i don't want to carry extra shoes (nor buy them)
i understand that the experience with foot retention is good but it doesn't seem like a good fit for my situation. i essentially just wanted a simple commuting bike that is low-maintenance and looks cool (subjective of course) and encourages fitness (no coasting)
>>2044401well as I've pointed out it is probably a matter of personal preference. I mean recently I was at a cafe on a hillside road and I was eyeing a BMX, no brakes, flat pedals, I simply assumed it was fixed. The guy popped out of a door hopped on and got me for a second when he freewheeled down the hill. But then again yeah its a BMX, built for tedshred. What I am getting at is: It will always boil down to personal preference.
I feel like I can not sprint without retention and desu I have never seen anyone do it either. And I think I can not skid without, I might be wrong. Even my daily commuter has XCs so yeah... does it need them? Nahh. Are they even good? Sometimes when im shitfaced and I sprint I unclip.
I guess I'm just used to foot retention ever since I was a kid and also it feels secure and safe for me, especially in adverse conditions and maybe I'm just uncoordinated or have goofy feet oe legs idk. Could be.
If you don't feel like its appropiate for your situation then there's your answer. But it's also probably just a thing you need to try to understand.
I just very often feel people make a scenario up in their head that doesnt exist 'aaah Im getting caught in my pedals I'll fall over with a bike attached and if I crash my legs will break'. Doesnt happen. Its like skids, the reflex forms on day one.
The bump handling thing will improve you'll very quickly see that unweighting your ass has nothing to do with stopping to pedal, you can stand up while pedalling just fine.
I don't really see how no coasting encourages fitness, over a freewheeling bike desu but mhkay.
>>2044398>that conversation at the startHis dopamine receptors must be completely shot. Probably doesn't even feel anything when he cums anymore.
>>2044305possibly Tsunami but the shipping could be high depending on where you are .
all the stuff posted here has been fixed, though, if memory serves. but could be worth looking if they have other models
>>2044305see
>>2044326that's not always true. I have a roadie from 1987 on 32mm and fenders. I could size up without them.
I think the japs were more into the sport-tourer frames even if they didn't call them that. mines a Miyata and the catalog just calls it an entry level road bike for racing. even has a run/swim/bike triathlon decal lol
>>2044375not him but I think so. the guy I bought my old mtb from happened to have the manual for the Shimano cantis and there's like a trigonometric function to set them up right. they don't *say* that, they just show you the specific pad angles and the length of the center cable and where the brake line bolts to it for the particular model. they work great but this isn't really a thing you can eyeball and guess.
thankfully, they make plastic inserts that you pop on and it lines everything up for you. but I didn't have that and not sure you can get them anymore. but if you can find the manual, it'll tell you and it's not too difficult. I made a guide out of cardboard so I'd never have to do it again.
>>2044332it doesn't last as long as oil. so yeah it's more effort because you have to clean the chain more often, which is the most time-consuming part
>>2044381>>I'm too incompetent to use a quick link once a weekmy quick link broke after I used it a few times. I guess you can just buy a bunch. do you just keep an extra in your patch kit or how does it work for you?
>>2044326Pretty dumb post long drops and cantis existed back then in fact they were more prevalent
>>2044383no. iirc the even mustache man in the Park video uses dish soap.
>>2044386I don't ride fixed but on road bikes the drops are great to give your hands different positions on long rides and the drops position is nice for downhill and laying down power.
if you're ok with what you have maybe it doesn't matter. the anon who rides fixed says flats so he knows more than me. only way to really know is ride some. maybe borrow a bike or most shops will let you test ride bikes if you pretend you're looking to buy.
and yeah you need foot retention if it's truly fixed and not just single speed. you might like it anyway even if your gear freewheels.
make sure your saddle height is correct.

So just so I'm clear here, the tldw on this guy is that he spends his life literally digging through dumpsters for shit to either eat or sell then pretends he's anything other than an unironic homeless bum with starvation-abs by claiming he's all about fitness and bikes and that the big pile of shoes he's trying to sell you totally weren't dug out of the garbage behind some factory, right?

Did you actually need the nut or the 'bolt' with a hole in it? Because the nut is a fairly standard article and being sold online for 50 cents, I bet if you dig cheaper even so I stand with my claim: LBS can not compete or doesn't want to. I suspect it's a combination of both but mainly 'doesn't want to'. Why spend 10 minutes on a sale where a college student needs a missing link and the conversation goes like 'how many speeds', '26', 'like how many cogs in the rear?', 'erm... 8 ?', 'so do you have 3 chainrings and 8 cogs? giving you 24 gears or do you have 3x9 and 27 speeds... anyways take this one it should fit, thats 3 quid pls', 'uhm can I return it if it doesn't fit? ', yes sure thank you have a nice day. '
when you can spend half an hour on a boomer couple who will buy 2 electeic BSO, both at 3k each? 'It's got a nice cushy big seat and tires appropriate in size for a motorcycle and suspension and pedal assist it will even go up the hills...and you dont ever have to work for a thing, as alway... that'll be 6k'.
Yeah, if I ran a LBS and I did not do it out of conviction but to make money I'd too go with the later.
Online store: Order comes in, pick, ship. Done. They don't care. You paid shipping. As long as the item is sold somewhag frequent and has acceptable value density all is well.
>>2044223breh I ant doing that unless the bike has an E stay
>>2044567I don't understand what difference that could possibly make, is it because of the stiffness during the break-in? You can minimize that by wiping the chain with a microfiber rag straight out of the pot before cooling, officially that's "bad" but I have not experienced any noticeable detriment and it's somewhat faster to break in and less flaking
>>2044223so you're telling me I can do that and ride half a werk to a full week in fall or winter (aka percipitation almost daily also salt) between reapplications?
Why the two chains, I mean you sleep sometimes right? No part of the process you or anyone else really described takes longer than the night so why two chains? Take it off, pour your water (guess it might have to dry now. Go sleep? Wax the next morning? I mean not that it mattered, 2, 3 or N chains... they'll probably last you around what N chains usually would. It's just I'd like to understand.
Anyways I still don't trust it. To me it always seems it's something for people who hardly ride their bike, aka motorists who ride for recreation / sport and seem to avoid the messy weather. I just wipe, oil and wipe once a week, more when it's bad weather season or when it's getting more use for whatever reason (doubt thats ever the case) and I abuse the shit out of the drivetrain when I go far because I cant be bothered as long as the chain keeps quiet.
>>2044536to give an idea of the relative size of the person being talked about? you know, like thatโs what height and weight does?
Fucking insecure shitass.
I put these cranks in the dishwasher and they came out blue and chalky
They were black anodized
I thought the chalky texture would take oil, like it was blued, it did not, it absorbs nothing, not even fingerprints
What happened here lmao
Iโm not opposed to this color, itโs just odd that it happened
>>2044536Because us tall and wide fucks are surprisingly uncommon when you start looking, and thereโs a lot of bike considerations that come in when youโre tall, and documentation on bike stuff is averaged out and generally takes into account people being average height
I am 6โ3โ, I am not super tall, but Iโm relatively tall
When I build up bikes for myself frame size and steerer tube length on forks are a huge consideration for me because 90% of what fits me has a fuck huge long head tube and the frames in general are just very big, and when you get into very big frames the things that differentiate the tall people get very impactful like your inseam length and arm reach
So while most people in the average height range really only need to care about that vague height range S/M/L offer, things like top tube length and reach are way more of a problem even for casual riders at the higher end of the size scale, just the same as at the low end.
So when us bigger people look at products that have attributes important for other big people, we share about it.
>>2044493I'm 200+ and taller. my saddle resembles the left because it fits my sit bones and I can do 30-40 miles without any preparation comfortably. in order for this to work, I need to interface with the machine comfortably. a saddle is not a seat, it's a perch and a balance point. you only want contact with the sit bones. if you're built like a linebacker, getting a similar saddle a few cm wider might be just the ticket.
with that wide saddle, anything over 5 mph and 2 miles would be torture. there's no way it will allow proper leg extension so you could only use it on a cruiser. which is probably who they're marketing it to, but don't think you could bolt it onto any of the bikes here in /pybt/ and ride away normally
>>2044248yeah I do lmao, I grew up skating and have ridden a bike before so I'm not worried about falling. The mountain I'll be on is basically a big hill 1,080 feet, vertical drop of 850ft. I have done some trail riding in Alaska a couple years ago

What do I want? There's a huge used bike market where I live and I don't need anything fancy just cheap get'er'done.
>>2044661post your local Craigslist .
also how tall are you/are your legs in proportion to your body?
>>2044654Tighter tolerances and more actual ratcheting points in the mechanism is inherently more loud, since the smaller parts tend to use more precise and tight spring pressures, thinner lubricants, and are generally made of lighter materials which dampen sound a lot less.
What this turned into was that really good hubs made a particular noise. So the idea of good high end hubs was synonymous with them being noisy.
Cue manufacturers banking on this idea by intentionally making their hubs more noisy, or at least not designing in mitigations to make them quieter.
The reason an industry nine hydra is super loud and almost whiny is because itโs made of fairly thin but strong aluminum, and has a shit ton of little ratcheting points, and itโs all got thin lubricant on it.
There are ways to make them quieter, use a thicker lubricant, use a different material that deadens sound more, make the housing thicker, and so on. And while some of those will negatively impact the performance of the hub, itโs really not enough to where it would matter. They choose to let it be noisy for those minor, almost entirely negligible performance improvements because people like that itโs noisy.
I have a new bike roughly 1 month old and 400 miles. There's a mechanical clicking noise that I can feel coming from somewhere near the pedals that happens once per rotation. Any idea what it could be? I am hoping it's something I can fix with an allen wrench, something like the bottom bracket that requires disassembly is beyond me but it shouldn't be the BB on a new bike?

>>2044661Unfortunately you are too fat and American for cycling just drive your truck
>>2044681>>2044671This can't really be answered without an in-person inspection, but are you using the basic plastic pedals that came with your bike? If so, those should really be thought of as 'test ride pedals.' Assuming that's the issue, they need to be tightened (or ideally, replaced) before you keep riding the bike, otherwise the friction in the bearing will cause the pedal spindle to unthread and if you don't catch this in time you'll end up stripping the threads in the crank arm.
>>2044661Like previous anon said, post your craigslist and folks here are happy to help sort things that might worth looking at. But buying used is a gamble if you're starting with zero knowledge, so I'd recommend looking for bike shops near you that have used bikes or a bike coop.

>>2044685The answer to your question is really 'everything.' Fitness (aerobic capacity, strength anaerobic capacity, flexibility), technique (smooth cadence, knowing how to pace yourself, practicing eating/drinking on the bike, how to dress), and bike setup (appropriate fit, mechanical efficiency, rolling resistance, aerodynamics) all influence what kind of speed you can sustain.
Biggest thing you'll want to look up is the concept of interval training.
>>2044684>>2044686Okay so I did try tightening the pedals and couldn't get them to move so I think they are tight on there. However when I hold the crank arm still and wiggle the peddles there is a little lateral movement that feels like it could be creating the clicking noise that I hear/feel when the pedals are under load. In that case would it be the bearings? And if it is, am I okay to ignore it for now or what's the worst that could happen?
>>2044687whut in tarnation! Getโerโdun
you guys are so funny especially when you try and ride bikes
bike noob here, when I ride I'm leaning forward so I somehow sit on my fucking balls or something and that area is not so comfortable (unless I wear padded underwear, but still then it's not completely comfy). what went wrong?
also I feel like when I try to pedal with the balls of my feet with this bike, it just feels a bit unnatural. like the position is set up so that pedaling with the middle of my feet is more aligned. it didnt happen with my previous bike.
not a big deal so far but I would like you guys opinion. is my fit not being optimal? what can be done with this kinda sitting? I can't sit upright since the handlebar is a bit too low. it needs to be heightened up at least 5cm or so. maybe even 7-10cm
>>2044676>don't wanna post my locationyou're trying to buy used but you don't want us to look at your used market.
whelp, lotsa luck.
>>2044729probably your saddle is clamped with the nose up too high and the rails are further forward than your previous bike but it might be the new bike has different geometry.
if it isn't already, level the saddle. if it is, I would nose it down very slightly. a lot of clamps' pivots are notched, just put the nose one notch down. see what that gets you.
are the saddle rails centered front-to-back in the clamp? try that. if you're still not pedaling on the balls, move it backwards a little. a small adjustment has an outsized effect on your foot position.
if your stack height is off as you say, that might be the whole problem. I'm assuming you have a threadless headset and you don't have the spacers to raise it? get them. or there's no more height on the steerer tube? you can try flipping a threadless stem for more rise. or buy a new one with more rise. if flat bar, you can get a riser bar.
if it's a threaded headset then you can just loosen the stem bolt and raise it up to the minimum insertion mark. if you're already there, you can get a taller stem. if it pulls your brake/shifter cables you may need to lengthen them.
>>2044732thank you. I will try adjust my saddle updownleftright something first, see if it it changes. maybe because this bike is MTB, my previous is touring/city style. the length or position of the crankset can be different? like if I pedal with my balls of my feet then I don't feel like my legs are completely straight, they are a bit put forward, and as a result, my knees are not 90% straight when I pedal down at 6'o clock position (I shouldn't be completely locking my knee when I pedal down right?). but this doesn't happen if I pedal with the middle or slightly lower than middle of my feet. maybe I need to increase saddle height a tiny bit too. I wonder if those things affected my sprinting ability.
handlebar height is fine if I choose to lean forward like I did with my touring bike, but if I choose upright (I see many MTB users ride like that) then it needs to be heightened up way more. so I can sit completely straight. I saw something like a stem set that can rise the handlebar by 10cm and adjustable. I don't know anything about cables though so I hope I can just plug-and-play it without any further troubles.
I'm ok with leaning forward I just wonder if that is a good way of riding effectively. especially with this MTB bike? obviously "just do what feels comfortable" is always a sound answer, but I'm ok with adapting and learning new things if they are better.
also can you teach me to know what type my rear hub is? I know it's cup-and-cone bearings, but I don't know if it's HG/MS/XD or whatever. so many types I'm just so confused. I dont even know what each of them does
>>2044733don't go crazy with the saddle adjustment .it will create more problems than it solves if you nose it down too far or slam it all the way forward or backwards.
>I'm ok with leaning forwardleaned forward at least somewhat is a better position than upright, even on mtb. however there is such a thing as too far forward. but I wouldn't worry about it unless it's giving you problems. you'll feel discomfort especially on longer rides if it's off.
>what type my rear hub is?what are you trying to accomplish with this information? are you trying to put new cogs on it or...? usually you find out what it is by reading the writing on it. did the branding wear off? there's probably a serial number stamped into it somewhere but I've had hubs that didn't.
post a picture of it
Is "pedal with the ball of your foot" bro science or has it been tested? Currently my feet rest about mid-foot on the pedals and it feels fine, but I was going to try adjusting the saddle rails backwards to adjust my foot position to the ball. But now I'm reading some contradictory articles online and now I'm not sure if the foot ball position is just weird cycling dogma or does it actually help/feel better?
>>2044735I see. I will go ez on adjusting saddles and height and give each change some ride time. I have no problem with leaning forward as it is so far but it just my balls so involved, I don't think its healthy.
as for my rear hub. in general I just want to know more about my bike, and in near future I will buy stuff to replace it. I'll get rid of my 12s in favor of a setup for better speed. I only use like 4 out of 12 gears right now and the price ain't worth it at all. I also wanna learn to do some stuff myself like re-greasing the balls and such if it isn't too difficult.
you might not believe but even though this bike was being sold for a few years, and the e-scooter versions from this company is quite often seen here. there's no fucking manual or info at all other than this URL:
https://www.dienmayxanh.com/xe-dap/mtb-phoenix-blaze-275-inch
the official website doesn't even have this model on their page. and there's like literally 1 or 2 videos on youtube about it. sorry it couldn't be more helpful
basically: I like my current bike more than previous, but I felt the gearing of 11-28t + 38 or 48 chainring much suitable to my needs. and much cheaper too.
>>2044736you should pedal in the center line between the (first) knuckle of your big and little finger

Can someone just answer my question about the ball of the foot pedalling meme. Should I mess with my saddle rails or just leave it alone?
>>2044759many/most riders including myself do it. the shoes for clipless pedals more or less put your foot there, although there is provision for some individual adjustment. some people don't like it. I've seen some anon posting about research claiming it doesn't matter. you'd have to look that up yourself.
but if you like it, I endorse it. I was taught to do it because it was the "right" way but also it's the most comfortable to me. I can't imagine pedaling midfoot all the time. it feels weak and annoying, personally
>>2044761My pedals are flats and I feel like I like to adjust my foot position for comfort/relief and depending on what I'm doing. If I'm standing upright going up a hill I'm on the balls. If I'm seated pedalling on a flat stretch it's more a stomping midfoot motion. I have tried repositioning my feet to pedal on the balls while seated by it feels like my knees are too far forward. I guess I'll try messing with the seat a little.

DONT EVER BUY THIS PIECE OF SHIT
IT'S COMPLETE AND UTTER TRASH

HOLY SHIT I LOOKED FOR THE PROBLEM EVERYWHERE BUT IT TURNS OUT IT REALLY IS THE WEAK SPRING ON THIS SHIMANO M4120 PIECE OF S-H-I-T

TL;DR: don't buy shimano m4120, pivot spring is so weak it will cause chain suck and the top chain run goes fucking limp from there mere rotating inertia of a 11-42 cassette.

does picrel mean that they always rotate a certain amount or that you can adjust them a few degrees?
also which should i get as a beginner
>>2044784>isn't deore like midrange mtb? why would they make that without a clutch? seems kinda stupidGod fucking damn, two nukes wasn't enough.
>>2044785I wouldn't be surprised if it also does this on an ordinary 11-36 cassette
Old worn out s(c)ram gx 10s derailleur did the fucking job (got a clutch)
Also note that the effect doesn't happen with bigger gears
It's literally about an initial torque applied surpassing a certain limit when going into freewheel (or god forbid, pedaling backwards) which is more a function of the radius of the cog than the weight of the rotating cassette (though the weight of course also matters, but much less than radius)
Here is the formula for Inertia of a spinning mass:
I = 1/2 * m * r2
11-36 10s weighs approx. 384g
11-42 10s weight approx. 415g
It's not that big of a deal.
As you can see mass only has a linear effect while radius influences the force applies in a cubic fashion.
Now depending on the angular velocity of me stopping pedaling the torque will vary but it's the same difference.
I assume the real issue is the non-linearity of the clutch action VS the normal spring and perhaps this derailleur is just particularly SHIT
>>2044786I don't know what to tell you, I literally switched the derailleur and could reliably reproduce the phenomenon Only the derailleur was switched, nothing else
Spin the wheel (and cassette) up to speed in a high gear and stop turning the pedals
The top run of the chain bunches up and is at very high risk of getting jammed between the rive side chainstay and the chainwheel
Switch to a clutched derailleur and the issue is gone
The actions are the exact same as the shitmano m4120 derailleur
>>2044790I have an older model deore for almost 2 decades on 2x6 and it's been flawless.
the m4120 page says it fits 11-42 but only for 2x. sounds like a Bionicon problem, not Shimano.
lol, buying something called Bionicon.
>>2044798I explicitly said it in my post: the problem doesn't occur with the other, old, worn out derailleur - it's obviously not a frame issue.
Everything is the exact same but the derailleur.
The inertia of the forward-rotating cassette OVERCOMES the chain tension pivot spring of the shimano m4120 derailleur when starting to freewheel
The inertia of the forward-rotating cassette IS STOPPED SUCCESSFULLY the chain tension pivot spring of the sram gx 10s derailleur when starting to freewheel
The sram gx has a clutch, the shimano m4120 does not
I bet a shimano derailleur with clutch wouldn't have the problem either
Perhaps I could try a random old-ass shimano xt derailleur from the late 90s as third control to see if this is just a particularly shitty piece of shitmano shit
Either way, the brand makes nice stuff:
https://www.bionicon.de/
I got the cargo bike frameset for cheap but it's still a shame because it's still a nice product and effort went into making it.
>>2044767go doctor tomorrow
>>2044800I'm not claiming it has anything to do with the frame, I'm saying the Bionicon company put the wrong derailleur for the job on the drivetrain. your deore is specd for 2x and they put it on 1x, that's why it can't take up all the slack
>>2044804Nah, that would be my error because I bought just the frame
It has sliding dropouts and the frameset is from 2007 so it was initially sold with either an internal gear hub or some 2x9 sram setup.
I just got the bare frame + forke and built it up from there.
>>2044804>>2044805To add to this: seems like it wasn't totally crazy of me to assume this would work given that this has been sold as such elsewhere
https://barquebike.com/products/sl-m4100-rd-m4120-m5120
One final remark about my experimentations: I even went as far as significantly shortening a chain during testing
It was so short that it would no longer be enough to switch into the largest cog in the back
This would put the derailleur chain tension pivot under more pre-tension
The effect of the upper chain run bunching up when freewheeling after pedaling persisted
The chain would be even longer if I used this derailleur and the 11-42 cassette (as the specs say) with a front derailleur setup, which would mean that a >34t chainwheel might very well be installed which would mean even less tension meaning even more chain bunching
No matter how I think about it, this seems like a faulty product
And it doesn't seem counterfeit either
>>2044805>that would be my error because I bought just the frameso all your capslock posting and histrionics is because you're retarded, not because the product you chose is flawed.
two nukes should be dropped on your house, dumbass.
>>2044808the pic you posted is a m4120 shifter with a m5100 rd, which is rated 1x.
quit shitting up the board with these walls of text. you fucked it up. buy the shit that says it works next time.
>>2044809Gotta vent every now and then
The product listing I linked specifically sells the shifter+4120 OR shifter+5120 as an option
Either way, cage too long, doesn't work for 1x
>>2044810The drop down menu clearly has the option to pick the 4120 or the 5120
Either way, it's just for example, it's easy to get lost with these products
In the end my error was assuming a derailleur that can handle 11-42 with two chainwheels can also handle 11-42 with just one chainwheel. front which I assumed means it's less and not more challenging for the RD.
This is gonna be fuckin wild
But my question, thereโs almost no documentation on these old drop offs, at least not in the forms I need.
Everything points to 32mm marzocchi bomber wiper seals simply working, supposedly all 32mm marzocchi stuff is pretty interchangeable
But thereโs nothing that 100% says 32mm bomber wipers will fit this 32mm drop off
So odd question but does anyone have some documentation on a 2006 drop off triple? I know this is full of oil and Iโve got 50psi in each leg, thatโs not important right now.

If you have to ask, get yellow. The rotation is free rotation while the cleat is locked in the pedal. The blue pivots less, but the point of rotation is at the front of the cleat rather than the middle. Red is no float at all.

It might take some fucking with because when i first got clipless not too long ago absolutely nothing about it felt natural so it was hard to just adjust until it felt better because it all felt retarded, but, stick with it and figure it out. You have the keys to the yard now rainbow anon. go take your tie-die 70s bike and live your life man, paint what you want
I have a bike with a cheap 1x9 Shimano drivetrain, is it normal for the lowest gear to feel weird? I normally only use gears 2-8 so I didn't notice it until now but i can feel like rhythmic clicking through the pedals when I pedal on gear 1, like the chain is rubbing on something. Is it easy to fix or should I just keep not using that gear?
>>2044841Yeah, your chain is at its most out of line when itโs in the granny gear, look at the chain line and youโll see why. The sides of the chain will be rubbing against the cassette a lot more and the way it interacts with the teeth is different enough to get pretty noisy.
Itโs normal though, itโs designed to handle that type of engagement.
You can mitigate this a little by trying to line up your chain line better but thatโs a lot of effort for a lack of clicking.

To me it is ubclear wether this is completely natural, dependent on riding style, or perhaps just a habbit formed by whatever system we were first using. After all toeclips and most clipless systems will put your foot there.
On the other hand you will see a certain part of the population pedalling mid foot. And apparently there is nothing wrong with that. In my experience those people almost always belong to either of these two groups:
Leisurly rider on flat pedals who is often morbidly obese and by toe looks of it has generally reduced range of motion. Often strong pronation and eversion if the foot. Never goes fast or means it.
The other group is the ultra distance fags. Spoke to a few of them to why this is and it immediately made sense to me because the following has bitten me on many very long tours and even led to an injury: Shortening the lever the foot represents reduces force on the calf muscle, always the first fucker to give out, cramp etc. and in my experience when you keep pushing you fuck your ankle. It's fascinating as the calves are generally considered highly fatigue resistant.
So this means for you: Ride hoever you feel comfortable. If you get hot foot, pain, issues with your calves or such, think about it and try solutions for several months at a time, making only one change at a time.

>>2044867you can get these for $10-$15 on amazon if you search bike cable cutters. they work fine
side cutters are a less ideal alternative
not sure what else would work, because stranded cable is pretty hard to cut cleanly
>>2044924Iโve got a set of these cheap ones and theyโre alright
Otherwise, dremel tool with a cutting disc
>>2044902/n/ seems to be overrun with people who'd rather fuck around for 2 days than spend $5, lately.
I just wonder how they get around otherwise?
Do they walk barefoot, then ask online how to stop the pain without buying shoes?
>>2044926Seems to be connected with all the people shilling shitty homeless tier bikes and raging about muh roadies
>>2044924brass, flux, torch be done with it
added benefit is that you always get to remove and reinsert the cable without ever having it fray
>>2044851My leg is firmly attached and I'm not giving it to you so stop pulling it!
Shimano m4120 a shit though, I'm pretty certain it's not my setup
At this point I'm curious enough I'll probably try it with a smaller cassette just to definitively prove/disprove if it really is a weak spring as I think.
>>2044873It's not even for me, it's for a person that shifts so rarely that the front derailleur seizes up to the point of being unsalvageable
A scar on my left finger from it pinching me while trying to get it to move again is testament to that.
>>2044925I also though that that works better
But I haven't made myself a fixture or anything and for not just cut the brake cable housing a few times to catch that jagged piece of metal in a way that the bowdne cable/housing cutters just take it off acceptably
I should really try it the way you do it though, maybe even take a small fast motor and just make a small tool/jig to do it in a safe, fast and repeatable manner like a miniature miter saw.
>>2044925>dremel tool with a cutting discwhat i use but guessing an anglegrinder with a thin 4" cutting wheel would do allright also.
>>2044933Get that person on a single speed with a ~2.3/1 gear ratio (for example 32/14 or 46/20)
>>2044890did you submerge the valve, also? the core may not be screwed down or just fucked up somehow.
>>2044945Funny that you say that, he is on my shitty single speed build and is enjoying it.
It's literally picrel but with cheapo V-brakes and some old integral handlebar+quill stem combo I got off another bike in the trash because it was more rigid for when I still used it
>but why are you so brutal to itPrevious owner crushed the chainstay by using a mid-mounted kickstand onto the thing and leaning on the bike while fully loaded for touring
I still want to give him back his "proper" bike though and even though he doesn't really need it at this point it's a matter of principle to get it working and working well.
I swallowed my pride and ordered a clutched derailleur.
>>2044924you can get end nippers at any hardware store, that's what I use for cables and housing. get some with long handles, they cut easier.
>>2044951I have
>literallyno idea what you're talking about.
Anyway, good luck and much fun with the clutched derailleur you bought for your "friend" who never shifts. Everyone has their fetishes and kinks, I'm not judging.
>>2044954I swear I'm not lying
He had it in the past with a front derailleur and didn't use it, simply staying on the biggest chainwheel
Because he only shifted the rear the FD ended up oxidizing in place over winter due to lack of movement
Initially the bike was set up with a multi-crank up front but the chain suck happened and I erroneously thought it could be simply fixed by going 1x
At least now I know it was the derailleur all along, it has been a frustrating path here though
>>2044954if you don't quit replying to him he's never going to shut up
>>2044959Don't worry faggot, the topic is done anways.
>>2044959I'm kinda enjoying how utterly clueless he still is, as if shifting was some kind of black magic.
Also, I personally think that 95% of the type of riding normies do would be more enjoyable and efficient without shifters at all.
>>2044949I did give it a quick dip and didn't notice anything.
Have put the tyre back on now and left the tube inflated, so time will tell if there's still a problem.
If nothing else I changed my brake pads while doing all of this, they've been in dire need of it and I've been putting that off as long as I could.
>>2044964I find it kind of odd that you discover a deflated wheel and your first course of action is to check the tube for leaks.
I mean I atleast, but I suspect everyone else, would first try pumping it and see if it was a fluke or doesn't hold air.
>>2044966It's not a pic of mine
>>2044968>It's literally picrelAlso inflation of "literally"
>>2044885There is no front derailleur
>>2044970hmm, could be cross-chaining noise like anon said. is it possible your chainring is bent? that might explain the rhythmic thing.
>>2044969My bad
>>2044951 "the singlespeed has the same frameset as picrel".
>>2044965>I mean I atleast, but I suspect everyone else, would first try pumping it and see if it was a fluke or doesn't hold air.Because the other 10,000 times I did exactly that, it wasn't a fluke. I figured I'd just save myself the few hours of waiting to see if it would inevitably deflate again and just crack on with fixing it.
>>2044972The whole 'diagnoising noise' thing isn't exactly something that can be advised on. Much less without actually riding it or even over the interwebs, not even having a recording of the sound. I saw the weirdest things make noises. Saw plenty of people who could have sworn the noise came from one place meanwhile th origin was on the opposite end of the bike. I also have a certain feeling noise is overreported for being 'rythmic' because ambient noise for the rider changes with leg position and perhaps even things like reflexion and attwnuation of the suspect noise.
But meh:
Anon, do some static testing. Lock the rear brake and apply some force on and off with the crank in every position imaginable, do it for both pedals. Do the same with the front brake locked. Do the same with the front wheel against a wall. Try flexing the seat and the bars in all directions too. Is there a bit of a buzz that you can feel in the pedals when you start forcing any of the gears or is it really just the sound? Crosschaining, mismatched / worn drivetrain components and tight chains usually come not only with the sound but also the nuzz under some load.

>>2044164>>2044228I'm 5'9 and this is a 15" frame. I heard the Fuji's reach is longer than normal so I think I'll be fine. $600 seems like a fair price?
>>2043590 (OP)I want an armored glove for heat and cold (all weather/season) under 70$ with armor, for a FAST MOTOR bike.
What are my options? Pic related?
Iโm so tired. I wish jannies did their job so we could have a nice bike board. We canโt have bikeable cities or useable boards/generals. Fuck sake
>>2044989I hate lazy bastards.
>>2044987This is a little too small for you
Iโm 6โ even and an 18โ frame is my bare minimum
I recommend a conventional medium, 18-19 inches
I'm sick of my chain getting all fucking crummy this shit SUCKS. I feel like if I don't use industrial degreaser on a chain removes from my bike that my drivetrain is just permanently coated in black gunk
I need the end-all-be-all best lube solution for road, gravel, MTB, commuting, EVERYTHING. Tell me the secret. Is it wax??? Is it Phil's tenacious??? Dry lube??? Everything I've done always ends up blowing cock.
Even if it's better than finish line I'll buy it. Please give me an answer.
>>2044985It's quiet, I just feel the vibrations through the pedal. It's not super annoying and I barely ever use the 1st gear, I just want to make sure it's not damaging anything and it won't get worse
>>2044892ok boss :(. I will just buy accessories in the mean time. I will definitely come looking for advice when I make it (financially) AND my next bike will be super comfy and have good p/p
in the meantime I will just be asking dumb shit in this thread
>>2045007I live in vietnam, big city. polluted dirty floody environment all day all night. I use $0.50 bicycle oil and it works fine. it's like oil for sew machine. light

>>2045008To be clear, I'm 99% sure it's the chain rubbing on something. I can feel the rhythmic clicking of the chain links moving across something. It only happens in 1st gear. I took a look at the chain and I couldn't see it visibly touching anything so I guess it's just rubbing on the cassette.
>>2045007Its wax nigga fuck all these retards who shit on it i have never looked back
>>2045007Liquid wax. You'll have to reapply it more often, but it's clean and hassle-free.
>>2045009There we go. Dont worry I will be here to give you good pp if you take your PhoCycle and move to america
>>2045010>it works fineand how would you know that you twink?
have you riden more than 500km
>>2045014seconding this. I use squirt and do zero chain/drive maintenance besides lubing it and get negligible wear over 1000s of kms.
>>2045012by 1st do you mean the smallest gear or biggest? and what's the frequency of the clicking? do you feel each link/tooth engagement or is it like a couple times a revolution of the crank? if its the former and feels like a purring/rumbling sensation it could be chordal action
http://chain-guide.com/basics/2-2-1-chordal-action.html
>>2045007it's wax in a crock pot. finish line has the same problem as the rest: unholy mess that turns into a penetrating grinding paste that never goes away
>>2045021Biggest. I feel every link in the chain sliding over something and I feel it through the pedal. It is kind of like a rumbling, I can't really hear anything but I can feel it.
>>2045024ok its something else than if its the biggest.
>>2045018im not homosexual I'm just short and obese and shy. maybe the shy part comes from being fat.
>>2045019what do you mean? I've been riding everyday since january 1 this year. always at least 30-60 mins or more. I tried this on two bikes and they work FINE. just FINE. nothing special.
but it's ok to doubt me because I CANT afford the ones you've been using. I will never pay $10 for bike lube when I can pay $0.5 to $2.
I literally don't believe in carbon fibre or whatever fancy shit they put in the lube.
>>2045027based, soap and water and brush ti clean chain and then lube it with normal libe, dont pay extra for brand name. save money for ramen and fancy Trek Giant or Cannondale next year.
but why you bike every day and still fat? stop eating.or only the gays will want you.
>>2044888my height is 172cm/5.643feet, my location is czech republic, I'd like to get some mid tier bike I can drive to forrest or drive on asphalt road and still feel comfortbale, other sites like craiglist here are sbazar.cz/628-kola or bazos.cz
got a simple bike computer
went on a 20 km trip according to google maps but it only showed 19 km on the bike computer
is that accuracy normal?
>>2045028what do you mean? just riding around for 30-60 mins a day do jack shit to the body imo. like unless it's very intense or full effort it won't do much. but yeah for the most part I think it's my diet. I don't eat enough protein (due to being poor and also lazy). I'm a carb boy I eat goyslop all day (due to cheap and convenient) only good side is I also mix protein and lotta veggies in so it's somewhat redeemable.
I will save one or maybe even two year for anything worthwhile. thank you for re-affirming my view on cleaning and lubing the bike.
I went to a bike repair shop (that seems professional and expert) the wife of that bike guy kept nagging me to buy her lube for "only" $13 it's "way better than the cheap shit out there that destroys your bike" and whatever. I can't even afford fucking brand name GREASE. they use top-of-the-line grease for their service each time they apparently use $4 worth of grease just for a section alone (BB and pedal, or front&rear hubs, etc..)
oh and the rubber for dropbar? they take at least $30 to change it because they just can't put it in. they have to take all the wire out and stuff. I don't know if that's really necessary or not?
either way I believe that shop's skill and quality, but I think they only offer premium prices for any service.
>>2045014>costs 10โฌhow is this so cheap? the lube that i buy costs 7โฌ and thats the really cheap shit
>>2045043>simpleI'm assuming the kind with the magnet on the wheel?
when you set it up did you input the size of your wheel? there's usually some default sizes to pick from and maybe tire sizes, too. my 90s Cateye had that, plus you could mark one full wheel revolution on the floor, measure it, and input that for dead accuracy
>>2045089It did show a drawing of that wheel revolution on the manual so I'll check it out
>>2045030when I go to "Facebook marketplace czech Republic" it gives me a default listing of 65 km radius centered on Praha. are you willing to travel that distance or should I input a different city+radius that you can get to? it would help to use a realistic zone for you to filter stuff you won't travel for, but the Czech Republic isn't all that big if you want to use the default.
