My state has only one trail on railtotrails and it’s barely even in the state. Am I just doomed to never have gravelkino? I like the not-paved path nature-y aspect of dirt and rocks but dont really want to go down mountains at 30 mph with a helmet and a dream.

I'm betting there's probably trails and dirt roads in your state that aren't on railtotrail. From my experience every place has little paths here and there that you wouldn't find unless you looked in person.

The unconvenient truth about every sports, ncluding, perhaps especially even, cycling, is:
Physically you plateau after a surprisingly short time.
Perhaps there is very slow and marginal gains in the physical departement after the plateau and perhaps there is some tricks to coax out just a bit more. But the plateau is real for everyone and wont go away unless you hop on the juice and even then thsre will be another very soon.

I keep reading that road levers with v-brakes have to position the pads really close to the rims and I'm worried about tire clearance (406 rims with >30mm width tires).

Mini v-brakes or v-brakes+travel agent?
if mini v's, I'm thinking about tektro's RX1 or 926AL.
Full v-brakes, I have no idea which one to get.

>road levers with v-brakes
you'll have slightly less than 0.5 mm of pad to rim clearance, and as the pads wear down the hand lever starts to have over an inch of dead travel.
that and the only braking modulation available is using two fingers, else the wheel is too easy to lock up.
only advisable if your wheels are perfectly true and your brake cables have barrel adjusters at both ends or at least inline.

Mini V brakes are kind of wooden, still likely better performance than low profile cantilevers. pad clearance is about 1 mm
cantilevers provide a bit more pad clearance (1.5 mm) and smooth post pads can be adjusted asymmetrically.

the tektro 926AL looks like its arms are stubby and slightly short, I this could be set with a bit more pad clearance.
tektro RX1 arms being a bit longer and thinner will bend and be relatively spongy.
both have metal barrels for adjusting the return spring, briddy good as they will retain their thread for much longer.

>>2045203
>3 hours and not fixing it
kek, type of pad adjustment contributes to this allot
cantilevers require absolutely perfect set up to work well, esp the low profile ones.
imo medium profile cantilevers and the best, easy to set up.
wide profile cantis tend to be flexy and get caught on things / easy to damage

dont know, but it looks like a workshop manual, iirc allot of them are never digitised and the paper copy's get thrown out when bike stores close down
>>2045226
yea its pretty hectic, at one point they even made special tools to help make it easier. (TL-CB10 Proset )
but for the most part so long as the straddle wire is at around a 90 degree angle when the pads touch the rim things should be ok.
iirc its about 70% efficient, ie 10 kg of grip force at the hand lever should deliver 7 kg of braking force to the pads.
>926AL it is ?
some further investigations seems to point to this mini v brake having arms 80 mm long,
where as the RX1 has arms 85 mm long, so its a very minor difference,
the main difference between the two is the 926AL has thicker stronger arms.

I often see "semi-pros" or just dedicated cyclists (that are also doing well financially) buy DT SWISS components like wheelsets. they are several time more expensive than my deadend bike. are there such massive differences?

cartridge bearings are easier to fix/replace as they're a single unit, with cup and cone they last longer but you have to trash the whole hub/wheel if the cup is worn out.
DT Swiss is pretty good in general, they also make cheaper hubs/wheelsets.

if you're not wrenching carbon, you don't usually need a torque wrench. snug your bolts and then give them Β½ turn or so more to tighten them down. unlike with carbon, you aren't going to break the bike. as long as you don't strip or break the bolt, you're good.

forgot to say this is special price. originally it was $400 or something.
story is: supermarket imported those bikes. but there are bike sellers who imported them illegally too. then supermarket sold badly (cuz lack of dedicated, good bike salesmen) and other reasons. they then discarded batches of those bikes to those individual bike sellers at sweet price -> those sellers then bumped the price up. that's why this bike is around $200 now.

it was $140 or so a month ago when supermarket sold the last batch. fucking unbeleivable right?

27.5 inch is obsolete
the geometry is old as well
bullbars are old and actually dangerous on a mtb
kickstands are for filthy commuters

oh and I think I never actually knew what size I truly fit. I bought a 700c bike that said 46.5cm and it was fine. my current bike doesn't even say what size but it was advertised for 1m65-1m8 height. weird

A kickstand is fine. But not on a mountainbike. Wegen you ride off road, it can get snagged on branches or rattle loose from a jump, then wedge itself into your rear wheel, make you crash and destroy your entire bike.

And if you don't ride off road, then a mountainbike is the wrong bike.

I replaced my gear shifting cable and now I can't get my gears to work properly.

It goes 1,2,4,5 where 1 is the largest cog. Does this mean my derailleur hanger is bent?

I'm a bit confused because in some guides, the L screw determines how far the derailleur can go. But you'd need a tonne of tension for that to be true, enough tension to press against the L screw internally. I only gave just enough tension to get into the largest cassette cog.

Release the cable and adjust the high and adjust the low gear limit screw such that it shifts to that gear and doesnt make noise when you crank.
Choose the lowest gear on the shifter and connect the cable without tension or excessive slack.
Then try shift a gear up. Doesn't shift? Only makes noise? Adjust the barrel adjuster until the gear shifts.
Then shift to the smallest cog and adhust the high gear screw. Doesnt go to that gear? Screw out. Shifts too far and drops thr chain? Screw in. Adjust so that no noise again.
Then test all other gears. Find a good compromise for the barrel adjuster where all other gears shift acceptably.

>skipping 3rd
does it do this when shifting down from 2 ? if so there may not be enough cable tension.
when first fixing the cable in place have the barrel adjuster maybe only two or three turns away from its lowest tension setting
if you fixed the cable too tight this should still be enough adjustment to loosen it
where as you'll need plenty of adjustment to add more tension as the cable gets old and stretches

>L screw
setting the upper limit screw setting can be made difficult by the presence of cable tension.
I loosen the cable all the way using the barrel adjuster, then slowly move the derailleur by hand pushing on the outer parallelogram plate.
(while also using the off hand to pedal very slowly)
to change gears the guide pulley has to over shift past the next cog.
and then re trim so that the pulley is better aligned with the selected cog.
(modern systems like shift triggers do this automatically)
you'll need to run the limit screw so that the derailleur has enough movement to over shift from 2 to 1
its important to set this by moving the derailleur with you hand, as it accounts for looseness in the pivots.

the lower limit screw is easy to adjust, since there is no/very little tension on the cable the guide pulley rests farely well on the smallest gear.
only thing to do is screw in the lower limit screw so that the derailleur shifts up one gear, then loosen the screw till the derailleur shifts down to the smallest gear.

oh and tonight marks like the 4th or 5th time someone asked me why I still use cup-and-cone hubs and why not upgrade to cartridge bearings (especially the ones with loud zZZzz sounds).

is it a worldwide phenomenon? as far as I know, more expensive or reliable, best-selling models here use cartridge hubs (like DT Swiss for example), and many models have loud ratchets and stuff. but they can't affect the performance right?

I actually hate the sound because sometimes it can really provoke stray dogs on the streets and they might even attack u for it

cup and cone vs cartridge has nothing to do with how much sound the freehub makes, there are quiet cartridge hubs, but there are no loud cup and cone because there's only 2 brands making cup and cone and those designs predate loud hubs being prestigious

a brand new $200 chinese bike now actually comes with shimano mt200 + ARC loud ratchet 4 cartridge bearings now. it's not that expensive even when I compare to my useless unemployed neet ass's standard.

so that's why I really got curious ppl keep fucking asking me about it. the shop who repaired my bike few weeks ago told me "just upgrade it, nobody uses cup and cone anymore"

anyway. are good cartridge hub models THAT good?? I tested like 6 bikes this year 4-5 of them use cartridge hubs but only cheap/unknown models.

I wanna try out a road/fast bike with a highly-acclaimed hubs combo
Anonymous No.2045366 >>2045367

theoretically cartridge is slightly "worse" but this is all splitting hairs and it's more about the long term ownership experience. expensive hub brands tend to favor cartridge because if you fail to service your cartridge bearings for way too long the worst that happens is they make screeching noises, whereas if you do that with your expensive cup and cone dura chad hubs you need to buy new hubs, also if you have money for nice wheels you probably don't mind the extra annoyance of needing special bearing presses and bearing punches and stuff, or paying someone who has those tools

shimano and campy will have their diehard fans no matter what so they can get away with anachronisms but peter wood's carbon tioxicut $500 hub needs to convince its fred that it's a bifl item and a hub that self destructs if you forgot to service it for too long is a unsettlingly impermanent
Anonymous No.2045367 >>2045370 >>2045399

hmm.. I see now... I always thought the reason why I can't pedal up to 50km/h with my current mtb bike is because of the hubs + big tires. but maybe it's just tires and gear ratio.

so in short:
cartridge hubs = durable, just need to replace bearings.
cup and cones = also durable, cheaper to maintain, but up to a point the hub will break and need buy new hub?

I also just learnt yesterday that the rim brakes actually damage the rim/wheel and up to some point you gotta replace the wheel just because of that? I know it's like the most traditional and common design but why the fuck did it have to be like that? what's up with self-destructive patterns in bicycle? I don't see it as often in scooters or motorbikes
Anonymous No.2045370 >>2045372
>>2045367
the tires probably have a lot to do with it, also aero and gearing and how strong you are/aren't. the hubs are extremely unlikely to be a factor. but try just spinning the wheel when it's off the ground and see how long it takes to spin down. to do this properly with the rear wheel you need to remove the chain. an expensive wheel in top condition will spin somewhat longer, but that's not going to be the weak link here. and an expensive wheel can have a cartridge with a more waterproof seal, and that will be higher friction, but we're talking a couple of watts, not enough to measurably limit your sprint on a bike like that

I was able to ride up to roughly 50km with my previous 700c bike. so maybe you're right. it's the tires and different position. all the bikes I ever owned in my life are all very cheap/beginner stuff so the hubs couldn't be that different.

that sounds complex so I think I will skip that until I need some repair or something. once my tires are worn down I will 100% install slick tires for MTB. I hope I can fit something narrow like 1.5"

first thing I'd check is it sounds like you didn't clamp the cable properly.
click the shifter until the spring is detensioned all the way, to the smallest cog/furthest outboard.
make sure your barrel adjuster is not screwed all the way down nor all the way out, you want it towards the middle so later you can turn it a few turns either way if necessary.
unbolt the cable. grab the end of the cable and pull out any slack in the line. you're going to re-bolt it here, but don't pull it tight, just make sure it's not going to give any more, and only pull it enough to keep it steady while you tighten the bolt. make sure the bolt is tight.
now run through all the gears once quickly, just to get the system evened out. if it's not hitting or if it's overshooting the smallest or biggest cog , adjust your limit screws. you might have to reclamp the cable if this was necessary.
go through all the gears slowly and make sure each click = one gear. go big to small and then small to big to see which gear is the worst shift. whichever gear has the worst engagement, turn the barrel adjuster towards it aka the direction the chain should go from the last good gear to the problem gear. use small increments and recheck the whole system. usually if you fix the worst example the whole thing evens out.

cup and cone are less friction and therefore "better"
the remote possibility exists that rim brakes and loose bearing hubs can eventually wear out the rim or hub, but it is not something that actually happens to anyone who is paying attention and not completely clueless about maintenance. you already think about your bike too much so you don't have anything to worry about.

>get a different stem because these are incompatible without mods
Just taking the L on a $45 stem and the looks of a cool direct mount stem and getting a regular stem
>broach the inset holes on the bottom of the crown to accept a hex head lock nut, effectively setting a nut into the inset instead of trying to lengthen the bolts and bolt past the inset
I don’t want to do this one because it would work but I don’t have a broach or a press so I would be doing this by either buying several hundred dollars worth of tools, paying someone several hundred dollars to do it for me, or doing it by hand with a file.
>longer rear bolts and spacers with a lock nut all on the bottom of the crown, the front bolts would be flipped with the nut on the stem side
This would look like dogshit and be questionably safe with the bolt length and spacer
>fill the bolt holes with weld, drill and tap it as M6, heat treat the entire top crown
I want to do this but the heat treat aspect of it is the part im concerned over, realistically for what I ride it will be fine, until it isn’t and the crown cracks because of the heat stress.

Pic related is me wasting $1.35 at ace hardware trying out this flange nut and 25mm m6 bolt only to realize it would interfere with the curved bottom of the crown, but this also shows me basically anything would interfere with the curved bottom of the crown. The bolts should go through this way because it would look the best but then you can’t get a nut on here even without a flange because of the curve

It would be really fugly if the designer intended for the bolt or nut to assume the role of the corresponding pointer. Also as you've already pointed outanythibg else it doesn't really make sense.

The side closer to the steerer is notched with 3 spots that correspond to the 45/50/55 adjustments
It didn’t come with nuts, nor would they have worked anyway if it did without longer bolts and spacers
I think this fork predates the standardization of direct mount stems so it probably expected some different type of stem or mounting or adapter to use the holes.
Or maybe flanged rivnuts? It’s weird, it doesn’t matter
The stem is way newer and expects the top crown to be threaded so it just came with m6x20 bolts
In the end it’s m6x25 upside down in the front with nylon lock washers, and m6x35 in the back right side down with 10mm OD spacers that fit into the inset bolt head hole on the bottom of the crown, and then a lock nut
I don’t think this is as strong as directly threading into the crown but it’s the best I can do here for $14 in hardware

JB weld, it doesn’t need to be super strong, it just needs to be strong enough to hold the bash guard on and provide enough resistance to not instantly give out upon the next rock hit

Think of it like this, the weld would cost you more than a chainring

I can't get my higher cassette cogs to shift properly. With more tension it will shift down easily and with less tension it shifts up easily, but in the middle it's kinda meh not working that well in either direction. ie it either takes too long to shift, or requires too much finessing on the shifter to get it to shift, or I have to skip a gear entirely (only on up shift). My experience with bike thief deterrant:
I'm hanging with friends just outside of the bar, having smokes before parting ways.
A feral negro appears, does the nigwalk in th direction of the bike rack. Get's really close to my bike, probably has spotted the lock on it long before. But after being real close and after appearing startled the nigwalk continues along the rack to the next bike. It's some MTB, not chained, flat pedals. Negro hops on and rides off. This left me a bit mad and a bit amused.
Can't be sure what it was but: Locking your shit helps. Especially locking your shit next to more expensive shit and shit that's not locked.
Clipless pedals scare the casual negro. Probably less so the professional bike thief gang.
Got some practical stuff on my bike like two folding baskets. Maybe they just make it look shit.
Key takeaways:
Lock your bike.
Next to more expensive bikes.
Don't have flat pedals.

Annoying but unproblematic in the front, often overlooked in the rear. There was no regulation, go downhill too fast *pop*, go slow and its dark.
In 2025 you just hop on your bike and ride with good illumination. Nothing to worry about. Lights last for years.

the dirty secret is the cheap Walmart (or Canadian Tire) ones and the expensive brands all have to pass the same standard. well, I doubt it's different in Canada, that's for sale in the US.
the new technology is MIPS which the cheap ones don't yet have, it rotates some of the impact away rather than just crumple. afaik, there's no independent testing of mips yet, so you just have to believe the mfr.
I have seen new looking mips helmets at the thrift store alongside other name brand and cheap ones with cartoon characters on them. they all had the stickers saying they passed the test and they all cost $5. just gotta Lysol them down.
if you can't stomach buying used they're all the same except for mips and the expensive ones generally have better air circulation. buy the coolest one you can afford.
Anonymous No.2045769
Just want to say, I was recommended these a while back earlier this year. Over 5k miles on them and they're still going pretty strong even after I rotated them around 3,000 miles.
Never got a single puncture until today, and it wasn't even a complete puncture, it self sealed while I was riding and I never even noticed until I got home and had latex on the frame.

I had heard mixed things about these tires but where I ride the roads are pretty rough and there's lots of bits of asphalt and small rocks that gave me tons of punctures in the past when I wasn't riding on something more resistant like these.

The rear tire has tons of these "cuts" in the outer rubber that never penetrated to the point of puncture which would have probably happened if I was just using p zeros like I did in the past which weren't the worst at getting punctures on but I definitely got quite a few when using those. Even though these things are heavier and slower it's worth it to just have the peace of mind never getting a puncture.

kek, they do look spooky thin and have a few sharp corners.
plus the return spring tension screw threads directly into the body (no big deal, just make sure they dont go rusty)
but its kind of shaped like a truss and is probably strong enough so long as its forged.

>Do I even need to worry about flexing
likely not, when biking down hill 50 to 60 kph is not odd for me, so I'm a bit pessimistic about brakes.
I've not really had a v brake fail entirely on me, main thing is maintaining pad alinement during braking.
with the most dollar store pot metal vee brakes the trailing edge of the pad may rise up as the v brake arm is pulled forward by the wheel.
if the pad is too high up on the rim such flexing can cause the brake pad to rub a little on the side wall of the tire.
desu I think its mostly the barrel bushings being loose / worn down that takes this to the danger zone.

>side note
apparently tektro cx 8.4 are 84 mm long, so the tektro RX1 at 85 mm long is briddy close and should work well with campy ergopower brifters.

It's just less safe to ride without, cause when you slip off, the cranks keep spinning. You won't be able to put much pressure on for reducing your speed, can't skid, and staying on the pedals gets really hard on a fast downhill.

I'd say you don't need for retention for casual cruising on flat ground. But without it, you need 2 brakes, and are missing out on everything that makes riding fixed fun in the first place.

Dude you need to stop asking about this and face it:
The Honda Super Cup everyone around you commutes on weighs 150kg with a full tank and an average Viet rider on it, and has 4HP. That's 3kW, or 20 Watt per kg.
Let's say you and your bike weigh 75kg and you are relatively fit so you can sustain 150 Watts.
That's 2 Watt per kg.
If you train and become a pro cyclist, doubling your sustained power output, you have 4 Watts per kg.
That's still only 20% of the power to weight that the most rickety underpowered scooter has.
Where I'm going with this: You won't ever match the speed of a scooter in traffic on your bike. Even if you're Tadej Pogacar on a $20k carbon race bike. It just isn't goint to happen.
So stop worrying about it and enjoy riding your bike.

if I go to work with scooter takes 20 mins. I want bicycle takes 25 mins or a lil later but not too late like 30-35 mins+. so this is really impossible?

do in-door bicycle trainers have watts and such? I can go to the gym to find out my level, though that might not be equal to what I'd do on the roads with my own bike. I always thought training with the indoor bicycle machine is harder and the limit is higher though

how can I know the PSI of my tires? all my life I just wait for tires to be soft then go find some random scooter repair stall on the street and fill it full.

now I have a air bumper so I just bump but it doesn't have a fucking number on it. I just bump and bump.

and I just realized my bicycle hubs don't have a rubber seal that apparently many more expensive bikes have (to prevent water, dirt, etc...)

can I buy them and install them to my hubs? I'm watching bike videos again and the seller brags about it on one of his bikes. my city floods A LOT so I might get fucked in the next few months.

if your feet come off during a time you need to slow or stop, you either have to stomp down on the back wheel with one foot, or Fred Flintstone it.
most people panic in an emergency so doing either is extra sketchy, so most people ride foot retention so it's never an issue

okay good to know.

ive yet to run into any sketchy situations that led to a crash but my bike also has front and rear rim brakes (required by law in my country) for emergencies. that being said the added control sounds nice- slowing down with my feet is fun but i do feel kind of like i could easily lose the pedals from time to time. My pedals seem ready to accept toe clips so maybe i'll get some fitted when i take the bike in for maintenance. thanks anons

CUBE support is trash if you care about that and the designs are uninspired and soulless. I do like the Trek Domane, but keep in mind that the AL 2 will have only a max tire clearance of 28mm with rim brakes. I would go with the Giant Contend or with the Trek if you can live with the tire clearance. I have the Domane AL 3 and it is amazing and with disc brakes I have more tire clearance but honestly low tier disc brakes are a bit worse than good rim brakes with alu wheels. Both of these bikes are "endurance" bikes but I personally much prefer those over gravel bikes because of more reasonable steering and more fun geometry.

With a car, I could theoretically make it in 30 minutes. But realistically, during rush hour, it's 45.
So I'm slower on a bike. But I ride through the countryside, with green meadows and a view of the mountains. In a car, I'd be surrounded by other cars and pavement. Even if it was the same route, I'll always prefer the bike, even if it takes twice as long.

Unless they’re high end cable disc brakes which are only cable brakes at their price point because of some appeal to the cable itself, on anything else it’s just an indicator of cost cutting.
MT200’s cost like $50 for a pair at OEM volume pricing. Basic 2 piston hydraulic disc brakes that smash any cable brake.
When you see cable brakes, especially basic ones, it’s just the company in question scraping cents off their product and trying to convince you it’s just a normal option to have an objectively worse brake technology on a certain type of bike.
