This would only work if someone happened to need all those parts exactly. And even then, they look so bad they'll detract from the look of any bike you'd put them on.

I mean, I know the one with the handles can be used without installation. but there seems to be so many wide gaps for that basket/pannier I probably would need to find something to fill the surface gaps.

I like the one that basket just dont know if can install on my bike?

you put a backpack or bag in the basket and take it out when you stop.
please don't take this the wrong way, I'm just legitimately curious, but how are you able to tie your shoes in the morning all by yourself?

for backpack and some big bags it would be fine but trust me there'll be small items that get dropped between those gaps. the ones that I don't always have a bag for.

of course u can say I should just always have a bag or backpack if that's the case. but it ain't always so

I'm indeed smart enough for some things just kinda clueless and unsure about many others.
I usually wear slippers by the way. only shoes when exercise or dress up a bit

Ordered a hitch for my Kia soul and a 1up quik rack, pic is someone elseโ€™s photo.
Should have it all in a week or so but is there anything special with racks like this to look out for in terms of security? I intend to lock and chain through both hoops and the bike to make theft a pain in the ass while traveling with a fuckhuge long thick wrapped chain I have, think that will be good enough?

Kinda pointless IMO.
A thief could just saw through the flimsy aluminium rack, or take off the hitch.
Don't leave your bike on there unattended unless you're driving or in secured parking. Use a cable lock that's just enough to keep someone from taking the bike without tools in a second.

I still can't get over how some bike repair shop charges at least $22 just to replace the rubber parts on the dropbar. they say the rubber can't just be taken out by force because they have to take out all the inner wires first, that makes it similar to assembling a brand new bike.

is this shit true? I was thinking of saving for a road bike in some year but I don't want to be EXPLOITED like this. $22 just for labor cost only, the rubber is another $22. what the fuck

Buy it only if it's in like-new shape and you can test ride it before you buy.
Still goes against the rule never to pay more than half the new price on any used bike cause you lose the warranty, free bike fit and access to a shop that prioritizes you over bikes not bought there.

fit looks wonky with the low saddle and long stem unless you're an ape.
23mm tires on non-tubeless-ready rims are slow, uncomfortable and puncture-prone.
3x on a road bike is kinda useless.
For a little more you could have gotten something more modern with 2x11 and 28mm tire clearance.

its NOT technically true its only true for some asians that have sketchy appearance that can look both male or female. the ones that do crossdressing cosplay or tuck their small penis in on Twitter and ask for money. some of them are cute though

anyway the plan failed bigly. I contacted the $1000 bike user and he just told me "this bike is in pristine condition, no need for a test drive". I could never afford it anyway. maybe I should consider selling drugs, or just steal bikes from now on.

if the wheels are hand built (or at least built to order like some china carbon wheels) then it can make sense but if it's a factory wheel the hub can be determined by the wheel (if it matters) or the hub is so low end that it's not worth mentioning (which is true in this example)

the bottom bracket also barely matters for most bikes, certainly not an old alloy frame. some press fit frames will inspire autism that gets people to start sperging about third party BBs but if you mention your BB when you're selling a bike like that you're basically advertising that there's something questionable about the fit or the facing or the tolerances, because why else would you have replaced an invisible part? let alone spend that kind of money. so yeah you could say oh I replaced my factory token ninja lite with a hambini or a wheels manufacturing BB for $200 extra wow just think of the improved tolerances or the increased off-axis stress limits, but it's like saying oh sure I've got HIV but my viral loads are so low as to be undetectable thanks to the cocktail of antiretrovirals I'm on. sure, on paper, that's reassuring, but in practice it just frightens people away

>rubber parts on the dropbar
the hoods?
yeah, you can cut the old ones off but the new ones you need to route the brake cables through the hood again. some integrated shifters might need the shift cables through them, too, but mine don't, at least. anyway, that means the brake cables have to be unbolted (or whatever it's called for hydro) put the new hood on, bend it over to get at the lever and run the cable through the brake lever again. so when you reattach the brake lever with your new hood, you have to do a brake job on the caliper at the other end, too.
so, $20 sounds like a deal to me but if you're too cheap for that click the park tool link in the op and do it yourself, crybaby.

>Already have close to 6k miles this year on it, chain checker slots right inside with no resistance showing it's time for a new chain so I order one.
>Get new chain in the mail, same as old chain, trim it to same number of links and put it on
>As soon as I start riding on the highest gear it starts skipping every second

What am I doing wrong? My cassette is around the same milage as my chain, only the highest gear is skipping the chain works normal on every other gear and the derailleur is adjusted properly. I'm sure if I just get a new cassette too It would stop but I don't want to spend another $70 on a new cassette when I just installed this one back in February.

The old chain still rides fine too, no skipping or anything on the highest gear. What is the general way you deal with new chains and cassettes anyways? Is it best to change the chain and cassette at the same time, or multiple chains on the same cassette? I've always thought that you could go through multiple chains before needing a new cassette and have done that many times in the past.

If you go too long before a new chain you're better off just riding the whole setup until it starts failing and then replacing all of it at once

If you're diligent about chain checking sure you can do many chains first before a cassette, it seems you may not have done so though.

I ride on almost entirely flats, so I'm almost always riding on the highest gear since the only "hills" where I live are going over the levees and bridges, that and a strong headwind are the only times I don't need to ride on the highest gear. I'm guessing it just wears out my top cog very rapidly as it's always kind of been an issue with it starting to bounce on the highest gear very early into a cassettes lifetime. Usually changing the chain fixes it for another few thousand of miles before I change the cassette again but this time the cassette was changed just under 5k miles ago and it's already really worn down I guess.

I think I'm just going to start buying a bunch of 11T cassette cogs for mine and just replace those every time I change my chain.

What does /bqg/ think of my new bike? I think it's a cheap Walmart Cruiser, was just given to me for free. First thing I did was take the fenders off. What else should I do with it? Kinda thinking about adding a derailleur to make it more practical even if I have to take it into a shop but that probably wont be worth it and I almost prefer the simplicity of the single speed. I have this vision of slowly upgrading this into more of a utility bike, but what do you guys think?

Stop mashing and start spinning.
Shift down at least twice from what you now think is the correct gear, then use that one. A cadence of 90 is optimal.

you can't feasibly put gears on that bike.
also, "slowly upgrading" a cheap bike doesn't work. just ride it as is, and if you get frustrated with its low quality cause you actually like riding, buy something better. Only thing worth upgrading are saddle, tires, pedals, and adding a rack/basket/lights. you can migrate those onto any future new bike, too.
also, put the fenders back on, that's not a race bike.

You'd have to replace the rear wheel (assuming it would even fit inside the frame width and dropouts) and add a front brake (assuming the front wheel has a braking surface). Then you'd have 2 gears, which doesn't make a lot of difference.
For that money you can already buy a better bike used.

Fair, although these are 26" wheels and it already has a coaster brake on the rear wheel for what it's worth so I don't know how much modification to the frame would have to be involved, I'm just asking if its even worth it, and it seems like it isn't. I think I prefer having it be a single speed anyways, these thicker tires make it a solid single speed gravel rider.

You'd lose the coaster brake if you mount a kick shift hub. Also, it might change the chainline, then you need a different crank/bottom bracket...
I'd go the other way, mount a handlebar without rise, a sportier saddle, raise it to the correct height, and get better tires (e.g. Schwalbe Kojak or Kenda Small Block Pro). Maybe lower the gear ratio with a bigger cog in the back, to make hills easier (I like something like 2.5:1).
That'll make a world of difference.

If you change the chain at .5% wear, you should get 1 cassette per 3 chains.
If the chain wears to 1% stretch the cassette will be so worn that a new chain will skip on it
From my understanding anyway. I wax mine so I don't experience much wear, so idk first hand

Why are horizontal track ends open at the back and not at the front?
To get the chain off and remove the wheel, you have to unscrew the chain tensioner screws and then meticulously reset the chain tension when you put it back in.
If they were open to the front, you could just unscrew the axle nuts, remove the wheel to the front and put it back without losing your setting.

I'm 172 with 80cm inseam and generally fair well with 54cm top tubes.
Those 90's MTBs are crazy long.
Nothing you couldn't mitigate with a more modern handlebar that curves back just a little instead of being broomstick-straight, a 1cm shorter stem, or putting the saddle 1cm forward, for a leg angle a bit closer to a road bike. You're in the right ball-park.

look at your picture. you have a threadless headset where the stem clamps around the "stick" in the center. they can easily be adjusted, but yours is already at the top of the stick, there's nowhere else for it to go.

It's been going for a while now but the quick run down on the physics of the phenomenon comes down to contact patch surface area and how that relates to traction and rolling resistance. The scientists are now believing that rolling resistance is a product of contact patch surface area. The old belief was that thinner tires were faster because it felt faster, now that we have the tools to measure the physics of it all, we're realizing that thinner tires have a long contact patch which is worse for rolling resistance when comfort is taken into consideration. The prevailing belief is that, a wider but shorter contact patch has a negligible loss in rolling resistance for a significant gain in traction and comfort which allows a rider to push harder for longer. This does not mean a wider tire rolls with less resistance than a thinner tire but that with the extra traction given by a wider tire, rolling resistance and comfort can now be tuned via tire pressure instead of tire width

Wider tires have less rolling resistance in real world conditions when the road isn't
Conventional wisdom was that wider tires have more rolling resistance due to lower pressure, more weight and more wind resistance.
In recent years, data-driven analysis has shown that wider tires have less rolling resistance on real world surfaces that aren't perfectly smooth, weight isn't an issue cause with modern materials you can build a bike that's 4 pounds below UCI minimum anyway, and 30mm tires are even more aero than thinner ones.
So 30-32 is the new meta.

They are more expensive, less heat-restistant (can blow on long downhills with rim brakes), age more rapidly and you have to pump them up to pressure before every ride.

You can't raise them on a bike with threadless headtube, after the fork has been installed and cut. You'll have to buy a stem that is sloped upwards, a stem length adapter (shit for anything but the most casual riding), handlebars with rise, or a new fork.

Quill stems (in the first world anyway) are really only found on intentionally super basic bikes. Even low end chinesium Walmart bikes use threadless steerers and stems.
The road and gravel bike market has gone as far as to start using integrated stem and bar combos on the high end, or at least aero stems with internal routing in some price ranges.
MTB has mostly stuck to the 1-1/8โ€ threadless headset and stems since the mid 90โ€™s, and after that got super popular so now almost every bike uses that as the defacto standard

I putz around the city or do simple errands like going to the grocery down the street with it.

I've been using a plastic box on the rear fender rack, but it has a pannier clip... which get's me wondering... would traditional panniers actually work on a bike this low without having the feet hit the bags while pedaling?
Any ideas, recommendations or upgrades for a bike novice idiot like me that only uses a bike for practical purposes?

it's not just the color scheme. it's THE theme anon. it's the full length, reliable fenders that save 99% of commuters problem. it's the stylish front rack that can combine and extend with any baskets (even ones for e-bike, which is like a cage). it's the simplicity of the design (except 3x. I'm still a 1x devotee). it's how little care or budget needed to maintain this bike and keep it operational and beautiful. it's the STEEL frame that people pay $$$$ for but it's actually $$$ here (just $100).

maybe I'm growing some kinda bike autism. I just talked like this to my friend earlier today and he called me mentally ill. I'm not feminine by the way

my old panniers have the forward facing edge of the rectangle cut off at an angle to eliminate heel strike, but all the new ones I see are ortliebs that are symmetrical. might want to check for something like that. you can copy the measurements onto e.g. some cardboard and see how it'll look against the bike.
I don't think they would drag the ground but maybe, it could be close. just have to check the specs I guess.
another thing is the second mount point on the bottom of the pannier may be lower than the bottom of your short rack, but I imagine it could be modified to work with a little creativity

Update, installed the receiver and rack with no issues
It does wiggle a bit when going over bumps but not very much to where itโ€™s concerning, itโ€™s mostly twisting that it does which is inherent to basically anything like this
It doesnโ€™t tap the car with my handlebars which is nice, gotta make sure to keep my pedals down and strapped so the pedal sits in the well for the license plate
This rack doesnโ€™t have a through pin, itโ€™s just a friction expander ball which I donโ€™t like, so I killed two birds with one stone and the combination of security against theft of the rack and making sure it canโ€™t fall out, I used a big chain

This chain is stronger than the aluminum rack, this also keeps it from backing out all the way should it work itself loose, this would keep it in the receiver and at least give me a chance of noticing before it falls out

(I zip tied the chain slack to the receiver to keep it from dangling too)

Overall impressions, the Kia soul โ€œlifestyle hitchโ€ is overbuilt, itโ€™s worth its $300 asking price for sure, it feels way more robust than it needs to be for something that isnโ€™t meant to tow anything
The mounting it uses involves holes built into the frame and itโ€™s like 4 layers of body/frame thick at that point, and it uses grade 8 hardware of an excessive diameter
I wouldnโ€™t hesitate to tow a light trailer with this, like a little U-Haul box would be well within its design spec, I see why they donโ€™t do that and itโ€™s covered in stickers to not do that though, since itโ€™s bolt on it meets zero safety requirements for that, the Kia has no harness for lights, and the cvt would probably catch fire

The 1up quick rack is also super nice, it feels very solid, itโ€™s super simple to use, and itโ€™s out of the way. This design means I can still open my trunk even with the rack folded up flat against the bumper
The ratcheting feels smooth and tight, I actually forgot the key tool on the rack, threw my bike on it, and tightened the holders down before doing my test drive and it was exactly where I left it when I got back, it didnโ€™t slip out
My test was a pothole filled gravel road at speed, and crossing every train track in town with no care for my struts, besides the twist wiggle it went nowhere nor felt like it was going too far at any point
Nice

if it was me, I'd get riser bars and then lower that quill stem the same amount as the rise. even better, get a stem similar to what it originally had and put a bar with rise and sweep back. it's not necessary, I guess, but it would even out the proportions. for upright riding I really like how swept bars steer, esp with ergo grips. if the handling seems weird how it is currently my guess is this would even out the handling but you won't know for sure until you do it.

I want to buy a used bike for touring and daily commuting, no fixed budget but below 1000โ‚ฌ would be good and if its half of that I also wouldn't mind. I think I should go with a steel frame as many seem to swear on it for touring, 28" wheels and disc brakes. None of these are an absolute must have though.
I have recently tried a friend's Rohloff which felt awesome, but because I don't want my bike to look expensive to prevent theft I think I would prefer a derailleur. Another reason is that I imagine it is harder to tell the condition of a used hub and I don't want one breaking after a few years because the previous owner never changed oil.
Now to my question: For a few weeks I have been scouting ebay for a decent offer within a reasonable radius, but without any success. My list of search terms includes
>Koga Miyata
>Trek
>Vsf Fahrradmanufaktur
>Stevens
Which other brands should I look for? I am located in Germany.
If you have any advice in general for buying a (used) touring bike please tell me as well, this is the first time I am paying this much and I want it to last me many years. I also think about buying a cheap bike with rusty components but an intact frame and replacing everything to get some experience with bike repair, but I worry that I will not be able to tell if there are any flaws during a test ride when many components need replacement.

Sometimes I take it to a bike shop and try to explain my problem, only for the gears to magically work while I'm demonstrating for the dude.

You have to regularly lube the chain and cables, clean the rollers, and replace parts as they wear out.
Or you bought a bike shaped object that's designed to work only during the test ride.
If you're not going to do maintenance, buy a single speed or a bike with an internal gear hub.

bikenoob here. I just realized after browsing like at least 50 bike models below $1000 MSRP.
it's all the same more or less. what the fuck? I mean of course qualities differ, some stuff are more reliable and durable and shit but in the end they're still kinda the same???

like no big innovations or step ups between all those bikes. am I understanding it correctly, or is this something I MUST try and can only feel when riding? on specs, measures and tests, they all don't differ much from each other.

you compared a bunch of bikes in the same price range and are surprised they all have a similar quality level?
Here's a protip: around the $1000 range, ALL brands import a frame from one of the big factories in Korea or Taiwan, bolt components from one of the two leading manufacturers on and put their logo on it.
If you want something different from what's currently trendy, you'll have to pay more.

I mean I compare from $200 to 1000 too not just around $1000. I understand pay more to get more though. reason why I didn't look more expensive bikes cuz I think I can't afford it anytime soon so save it for when I'm rich.

redpill me on the bike frames. how can they be so expensive? some frames cost more than an expensive bike already. I know it's not just the titanium/carbon stuff. even alu and steel can be very pricey too. how much of it is just preference/style? and how much is actual superiority in quality, perfromance and durability (last a lifetime for example)

If you need an expensive frame, you'll know.
They exist for people who look for something specific that the mass market doesn't offer. The frame may look the exact same to a newb, but (as an example) it has sliding dropouts for a Rohloff hub, eyelets for a front rack, a mounting plate for a kick stand, and can be opened for a belt drive.
Only very few people need such a frame, so making it in low numbers drives up the price, even though it isn't made from special materials.

And if you compare bikes from $200 to $1000, they may look alike, both have disc brakes, a front suspension and what have you, but there's a huge difference in quality.
The $1000 bike will function as you would expect, with good braking, quick shifting, no power loss in the drive train, properly sealed bearings, a geometry that was designed and tested for its purpose, and repairability.
A $200 bike can still function for casual riding, but the brakes will quickly go out of adjustment, same with the shifting, it will weigh quite a bit more, and after the first severe rain or a year at the coast, all sorts of parts will rust or seize. And the only way to repair it is usually to throw the affected part away and replace it with something better.
As a rule of thumb, you can multiply bike prices by 20 and compare them to new cars. A $200 bike is like a new $4000 car (which can't be sold in the US, due to safety regulations that just don't exist for bikes).

This is how you become a nerd with a special interest.
Look at things long enough it all starts too look the same. Look at things even more and you start to notice the subtle differences. But also you need experience actually riding bikes, feel them out.
>but in the end they're still kinda the same
Yes. But to be fair also, you've been looking at entry level bikes that match your use case and budget.

so I found the World Health Organization's dehydration formula on Wikipedia. there's the one for people that are in need of medical attention, and there's the "low molar" formula for maintenance purposes. I bought all the stuff and mixed it up and figured out how many grams to add per water bottle.
I drank it at work out in the heat, but I haven't used it on any rides yet.
assuming I got the math right, it tastes really salty, even though there's more glucose in it than the 3 salts combined. kind of unpleasant.
maybe this formula is overkill? I'd like to compare it with commercial products but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

it's important for the lube to sink into the internal pins and rollers, and you don't want it on the exterior where dirt and grit will stick to it.
there's nothing wrong with motor oil as a lubricant, but it's a bit thick, the surface tension isn't conducive to sinking into the important parts.
the guy from bikegremlin.com, who is a bike nerd powered by German autism, recommends 3 parts chainsaw barre oil thinned with 1 part mineral spirits/diesel/what have you.
if all you have is motor oil, I don't think that's problematic at all, but if you have something to thin it with, mix that shit in, too.
more important is to let the lube soak in and crank the chain around to get it even, and then wipe all the excess off as best you can several times.
of course, you really should clean the chain thoroughly before servicing it but if you can't get to it right away and your chain is squeaky it's alright to lube it but prioritize cleaning and relubing asap

bikenoob here. I finally managed to hook up Strava to myp hone. this weekend will be a long ride and I will test my fucking limit.

there's a guy in my friendlist apparently he can ride 30-35km for one hour-ish (total distance, not avg speed). I'm thinking maybe with my MTB I can ride up to 25-30km total distance if uninterrupted.

problem is he rides in the suburb area. it takes me like 30 mins to just go out the edge of the city. I'm thinking if it's worth it.

I also past a female cyclist earlier tonight then I tried to slow down so she and me go roughly same speed but she caught my sad intention and intentionally slowed down even further.

I tried slowing down a bit more but then she just went in another direction. I feel sad

And here,' chimed in Radilov, pointing out to me a tall, thin man I'd not noticed on first entering the drawing-room, 'is Fyodor Mikheich... Come on, Fedya, give our guest a taste of your art. What are you hiding in the corner for?'

Fyodor Mikheich instantly jumped out of his chair, took from the window ledge a cheap-looking fiddle, picked up a bow - not by the end, as is normal, but by the middle - leaned the fiddle against his chest, closed his eyes and launched into a dance, singing a ditty and sawing away at the strings. In appearance he was about seventy. long nankeen frock-coat bounced about sadly on his dry bony limbs. He danced, either boldly giving himself a shake, or, as if on the point of collapse, swayed his small bald head, stretched his veiny neck, tapped his feet and sometimes, with evident difficulty, bent his knees. From his toothless mouth came his frail voice. Radilov must have guessed from the expression on my face that Fedya's 'art' gave little pleasure.

'Well, old chap, that's enough,' he said. You can go off and receive your reward,'

shouldn't be an issue if your freewheel tool still grabs. It's almost impossible to get off just by turning the tool. You either need a 1m long steel tube that fits around your wrench as a breaker bar, or clamp the removal tool in a vice and turn the entire wheel.

pretty much. I bought a very similar, stock Miyata in the twenty-teens for $185 and yeah inflation, but the bike just isn't an expensive bike. he'll probably say the brooks is worth a lot but tell him to keep it if he brings that up. I don't think anyone in their right mind would pay his asking price but some dumb hipster could throw the market off, I guess.

I mean, if it was exactly what you wanted (those bars, brooks saddle, single speed esp that specific ratio) in your exact size then $350 wouldn't exactly be a ripoff, it's just that you could wait a while and probably find another bike that would mostly suit you for $200-250, and it might even be a better bike. I'm partial to Miyata but still I feel $350 is high for 80s steel single speed conversion.

it's expensive because the bars stick out further so you have to get a stem with less reach; and the flat bar brakes and shifters don't clamp right to drops so you have to buy brifters. and you have to buy a bar. so now you spent what this bike cost on the conversion.
>>2047090
only if it's flat where you live and even then, I wouldn't intentionally gimp a bike.
ride it as-is for your commute for a couple weeks/months. learn how the gearing works with your terrain (3x will eat up even the nastiest hills with ease.) then decide.

the only thing I dont like about signing up for those events is it costs money. also every thing about those hobbies (cycling, running, etc...) can be so fucking costly so quick if we spend above the "bare minimum" required.

I was running for 1 year before I started cycling at the start of this year. I literally needed shorts (bought) + shoes (gifted). for cycling it's the same too. but if I become an itchy person wanna experience what there is about bicycles it just costs a fortune. I was shocked when the """""entry level"""" bike is fucking $1000+

shoes are foam and mesh and if they fail nothing much happens, you just need new shoes

bicycles kill you if they're done wrong, and the forces that a shoe gets to spread out over 10 square inches, the bicycle concentrates on pinhead-size surfaces that are changing hundreds of times a second, and if one of those surfaces has a flaw you'll feel it immediately and complain that the bike sucks

what should shock you is that entry level running shoes are $100 which is nearly 10% the price of an entry level bike, how does that even make sense?

im not complaining about safety or even quality (though I'm a big skeptic, I don't always believe more money/brand/prestige = better). I'm just strictly talking about price.
$1000 as entry level is absurd. and yes $100 entry level shoes are ridiculous too. I agree with you about there's much bigger responsibility on the bike though. just like any vehicles we want it to be safe and functional.

and this ain't just me I've been watching so many GCN videos they complain about prices too (both the readers and the hosts, although the hosts can't just say it straight due to their position in the industry)

it may just need a tune-up, turn the barrel adjuster. maybe the cable tension is off.
but if not, the mount for the derailleur could be bent. they can be bent back if made of steel, or many of them come with a piece you can replace.
or maybe your chain is super dirty or stretched.

I think it might be related to the wind and the temperature, yesterday there was no wind and it was 32C, today there was a slight wind and 20C. I'll probably buy a helmet with some kind of wind blockers (for ears) and I'll see if it helps. In case it doesn't- what would be a good remedy for my problem? it depends on the crank set desu
for eg your spindle would work for a 105-SC 1055 but not on the 105-SC 1056 (both are doubles)
(and also your BB shell width) but it would be odd to have anything other than 68 mm

Do a warm-up before your ride to get the blood pumping, going out cold means you'll be warming up on the ride instead which is harder when you go from 0-100 rather than 50-100
