/mu/ here. Settle a debate: is Lou Reed riding a girls bike or is this frame normal for men?
Anonymous No.2046083
A mixte or step-thru isn't automatically a girl's bike, but that one has front suspension, front and rear v-brakes, and a 2x or 3x crankset. That makes it a 90s to 00s hybrid, which means it was branded and marketed as a woman's bike, which means Lou Reed has girl cooties reeeeeeeeeee girls not allowed in my safe space reeeeeee

It's a Step-Through Frame. They were traditionally marketed as "Womens Bikes" because the sloped top bar wouldn't get in the way of womens dresses, but if you look at most antique photos of women byciclists you'll see there is no particular preference for either frame. Step-Through frames have also been marketed towards men as a more utilitarian style of bike, they were used in Paratrooper bikes during the Second World War for example. And today you'll often by marketed simply as utility bicycles, Mixte (literally mixed gender) bikes, City Bicycles.etc The first Safety Bicycles from the 1800s also featured these sort of hybrid style frames. Also like 99% of E-bikes use a step-through frame so its starting to become the new standard
Pic related, the inventor of the pneumatic tire apparenly prefered Step-Throughs
Of course I have a hill to die on because my only bike right now is a step-through cruiser that was sold to me as a mixed-gender bike and now I'm afraid I'll look like a girl on it

I've been told some people prefer step-through because there is no top bar to hit you in the balls when trying to mount/dismount one. Its just a bike that people can more easily get on and off of, which is why you'll often find this style of frame on delivery bikes or cargo bikes

Step-Through Frames are for men. They're more compact and don't get in the way of your nutsack.
Honestly though, the way I look at these types of frames is they look like a weird hybrid between a traditional bicycle and a scooter if that makes any sense, and last I checked nobody assigned genders to scooters

Headbadge is Giant. 4 cables, so it's multispeed, front and back shifting.

My best guess is a Giant Cypress W from about 20 years ago or a more recent Giant Cypress DX W. The W stands for Womens.

Might be a giant liv flourish, from before Liv had different headbages.

Note that there's nothing wrong with men riding them. Also, Mr Reed is probably a manlet, if that matters.

Pic related. It's a Giant Cypress W from around 2004-2008.

A quick googl search suggests he was 5'10". If we go by Walmart rules, whether or not he's riding a womens bike depends entirely on the wheel size. If it's a step-through frame with 26" or larger wheels then it's a mixed-gender bike but if the wheels are under 26" then it's a womens bike

Not walmart. Giant. Giant doesn't make mens stepthrough bikes, particularly not in the US. That licence plate looks like California. Nothing wrong with men riding them, but giant sells these things for women. Wheelsize available in 700c, 26, and 24.
